Housing complex for an informal competition

Often nowadays architect and modern architecture is questioned by different sides that their visions is too expensive, too modern and too futuristic.

Sometimes that might be true, but is there maybe a deeper answer. What is the reason they are questioned, is it that the viewer does not understand how the finished product is created?

And what if the architect is even going further is his/hers reasoning in the creation. What if it is not a simple red thread that is simple to follow in creating the building? But is actually 5, 10 or 20 different red threads that all start from the same point but all follow different paths and are then developed differently and then finally brought together to form the final product at end.

To create a large housing complex with a parking ratio of 0,9 per

household. Furthermore, with offices and businesses on the first floor.

Having a max floor limit from the municipality of 8 floors. Adding that the nation is planning to build a second track of railway, and adding a community stop at that railway.

Länstyrelsen demanded that the promenade was to be activated that the citizens has the possibility to access the water. Furthermore,

laying out some restrictions on the building area. As such 40 meters of no living zone from the bridge and with a 30 meter from the

railway. And having a 20-meter open space towards the water. To

ease up tensions from current residents of Sofiehem by creating view lines to the water of the river.

Site //

The site is Strömpilen 2 & Sofiehem 2:1 situated in the southeastern part of Umeå.

On the north bank of the river of Umeå.

This challenging site with 2 highways for cars with one of them on a bridge.

One railway track that would possibly

expand to a two-track railway. A beautiful river view and a group of citizens from Sofiehem that are used to a riverside view.

Importance of Structure //

The building is built with a wooden structure of glue laminated pillars and

beams. With a simplified structure built onsite will create its own design. This will also cut the cost of the building and having the openings between the

pillars filled with insulation will decrease the unit’s sizes.

Cubes adaptable //

The apartments follow a system of combining units of cubes. Either as 1, 2 or 3, this gives the apartments their sizes of either 25, 50 or 75 m².

These cubes are adaptable in their positioning and will maximizing the use of the area. Furthermore, the inside is fully adaptable according to the needs and wishes of the customer.

Cubes is cost efficent //

These cubes will be built off-site to maximize productivity. Built with a timber frame method that are easy to handle and construct. The unit will be built as modules with roof, floors and walls built separately and then put together before transportation. This method is taken from the cruise ship industry, were the structure is first built and the cabins are built offsite before installments into the structure. This method will drastically reduce building time and reduce building cost.

As the underground parking takes up most of the

ground floor added with businesses and shops. The first floor is where the housing areas start together with a large open courtyard. The second floor and upwards is weaved together with housing and semiprivate

balconies for the residents and open spaces that can be seen through by the sofiehem residents.

Facade as a billboard //

soundproofing and a forest in one

The façade is designed to work in a similar way as when

soundproofing a music studio. Just as the main building structure the structure of the façade will be built on site on the main structure. And modules of panels will be built offsite. These panels are simply made without complicated methods and this makes them both cost-, time- and material efficient. With the design combined with woods natural good sound absorption will help toward the noise from the highways and railway.

With the irregular structure combined with the standing panels of wood and passages to the river background. This will create a mirage of standing in a forest and seeing the river in the distance.

Courting the water// getting regulators in on the idea

To increase the use of the river a small boats harbor is created, and small shops,

restaurants and cafeterias will make the citizens more interested in using the riverfront.

In combination of adding birch trees, this will create a feeling of walking down a French canal.

As the large courtyard is an open public space. The roof parks will become a semipublic common area for the residents. And by the term become outdoor living rooms for the resident to create a better community.
