KEYDETS AT A GLANCE

VMI Returns Home For First-Place Showdown With UNC Asheville Keydets Have Won Seven of Eight Heading Into Contest Against the Bulldogs

Trailing 79-62 with less than nine minutes remaining in the contest, VMI responded with a whirlwind 34-9 run over the next six minutes to seize control of the contest on their way to a 107-100 Big South victory at Coastal Carolina. The win marked VMI’s seventh in eight tries, as senior forward Reggie Williams scored 23 of his game-high 38 points in the final eight minutes to complement his 12 rebounds, giving the Big South’s career leading scorer his fourth consecutive double-double. Meanwhile, junior Travis Holmes became VMI's 33rd 1,000-point scorer with his 18-point, 10-rebound performance, joining twin brother Chavis Holmes (20 points) in double figures. The win not only marked VMI’s first win in five tries at Kimbel Arena, but gave the Keydets a 2-0 conference start for the first time in nine years.

Senior forward Reggie Williams enters Saturday’s game needing 121 points to become the all-time leading scorer in VMI his- tory. Williams is chasing Gay Elmore ‘87, whose 2,422 points has stood for over 20 years as the school’s top mark. Williams, who has been selected as one of 50 preseason nominees for the John Wooden Award, is second in the nation in scoring with 27.6 points per contest entering Thursday’s play. Williams, who was also voted to the Big South Conference’s Preseason All- Conference team, is also the leading scorer in Big South history, while topping both the VMI and Big South scoring average charts at 22.3 ppg. Williams has also scored in double-figures in 41 straight games, the third-longest streak in school history.

With a free throw at the 13:04 mark of the first half against Apprentice, junior guard Chavis Holmes became the 32nd mem- ber of VMI’s 1000-point club, while his twin brother Travis became the 33rd player to do so with a tip-in at with 14:47 remain- ing in the second half at Coastal Carolina. The Holmes’ are the fourth set of twins to each reach 1,000 points in NCAA Division I history, joining VMI’s Damon and Ramon Williams on the prestigious list. They sit as the sixth-highest scoring set of twins in NCAA Division I history, currently with 2,134 points. (Page 6 for more info)

A season after leading the nation in points (100.9), steals (14.8), assists (20.6), and three-pointers (13.4) per game, the Keydets once again lead the nation with 97.7 points scored, 14.4 steals, 12.4 three-pointers made per contest and are tied atop the national rankings with 20.3 assists per outing. (All stats rankings entering Thursday’s play).

Before Saturday’s game, VMI will dedicate Costen Court. In a pre-game ceremony, Ralph Costen ‘70 and his wife Marsha, as well as Tripp Costen ’97, and his wife Jill, will be honored. It has been through the generosity of the Costen family and their business, Costen Floors of Richmond Virginia, that Cameron Hall’s new playing surface has been made possible.

This season, the Keydets entered the year with their highest preseason ranking in over 30 years, coming in third in the Big South’s Preseason Poll. High Point (216 pts.) edged out Winthrop (214) by two points in the voting, while the Keydets (147) were voted ahead of Coastal Carolina (134), UNC Asheville, Liberty, Charleston Southern and Radford.

Improve the Keydets to 11-6 for the first time since 1977-78, when the team was 12-5 through 17 games.

Mark the first time the Keydets were 3-0 in conference play since 1976-77, when VMI started out 8-0 in the SoCon. It would also be the first time since joining the Big South that VMI was alone in first place.

Give the Keydets eight wins in their last nine games, the team’s best such streak since winning nine of ten in 1990.

Be VMI’s first win in a home conference opener since 2003-04, when VMI defeated Radford 69-58 in its first-ever Big South game.

Things looked bleak for the Keydets in early December, as the Keydets fell to 3-5 after back-to-back heartbreaking losses to Army (71-69) and South Carolina State (89-88).

However, VMI has been nearly unstoppable since that point, winning seven of eight for the first time since 1996, with their only defeat coming by two points at Richmond on Dec. 30.

The 10-6 Keydets are now off to their best start since 1997-98, and with a win against UNC Asheville, would improve to 11-6 for the first time in 30 years.

Leading the way has of course been Reggie Williams, who has moved to second place on the national scoring charts (27.6 ppg) after topping the nation at 28.1 ppg a season ago. During the eight-game stretch, Williams has averaged 30.6 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per out- ing.

Additionally, Williams has posted double-doubles in each of his last four games, averaging 35.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists.

U

Unnw weellccoom mee G Guueessttss::

With back-to-back-to-back wins on the road against Mercer, Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina, the Keydets not only reversed a trend, but also won three- straight road games for the first time since 1997-98.

In Bart Bellairs’ fourth year at the Institute, the Keydets won road contests at Virginia Tech, Georgia Southern, Davidson and Western Carolina. That also marked the last time VMI has won three straight road games in conference play, which VMI would equal with a win at Winthrop on Jan. 23.

Overall, the Keydets have posted four wins on the

road this year, also defeating William & Mary in Williamsburg. The four wins by VMI in opposing gyms are tied for the third-most in school history, behind the team’s five road wins in 1995-96 and six road wins in 1977-78.

With a free throw with three seconds remaining in the first half against Southern Virginia on January 8, senior for- ward Reggie Williams became the Big South’s career scor- ing leader, knocking home his 2,212th point, passing Larry Blair of Liberty who wrapped up his career last season.

Williams now boasts a career total of 2,302 points, as he chases the one name ahead of him in the VMI record- books, Gay Elmore ‘87. Williams also passed Ron Carter

‘78 (2,228 points) for second on VMI’s all-time list with his 43 points against Southern Virginia, while Elmore holds the career mark with 2,422.

Earlier this season, Williams became the third VMI player to score at least 2,000 points, and the 436th player in NCAA Division I history with at least 2,000 points

The “Prince George Assassin” is also the fourth Big South player to break the barrier, and only the second with 2,000 points and 700 rebounds, joining Coastal Carolina’s Tony Dunkin, who totalled 2,151 points and 725 rebounds.

Williams is the nation’s second-leading active scorer with his 2,302 points, just behind New Orleans’ senior guard Bo McCalebb with 2,309 points. Interestingly, McCalebb also broke the 2,000-point barrier on Nov. 28, by scoring 22 points against Lamar.

The McCalebb-Williams connection goes back farther, as the two met on the hardwood in their freshman year, with McCalebb gaining the upper hand in a 62-49 victory in The Big Easy.

In what can only be regarded as one of the greatest comebacks in the annals of VMI basket- ball history, VMI outscored Coastal Carolina 34-9 over a six-minute span to turn a 17-point deficit into an eight-point advantage on Jan. 14. The Keydets then held on for a 107-100 victory, the program’s first at Kimbel Arena in five tries and only the second triumph against the Chanticleers in nine games.

Trailing 79-62 with 8:41remaining, the Keydets proceeded to knock down 14 of 15 field goals, outrebound Coastal 10-4 and force six turnovers the rest of the way, as Reggie Williams poured in 23 of his game-high 38 points over the final 7:08.

The end result was double-doubles for both Williams, his fourth in four games, and Travis Holmes, who with his 18-point, 10-rebound per- formance became the 33rd 1,000-point scorer in VMI history. Also chipping in was Chavis Holmes with 20 points, in addition to Adam Lonon’s seven assists.

Playing their first overtime game in over three years, VMI saw junior guard Travis Holmes hit a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left in the extra period to secure a 93-91 victory over Charleston Southern on Jan. 12 at the CSU Field House.

VMI not only posted its first conference open- er win since joining the Big South four years ago, but also its first overtime win in Big South play.

Senior forward Reggie Williams hit a driving layup with :25 left to tie the score at 91-91.

Following a VMI timeout, Charleston Southern worked the clock down but missed a 3-point attempt by freshman Jamarco Warren and on the ensuing scramble for the rebound Travis Holmes was fouled by Austin Johnson with 2.5 left.

Holmes nailed the two free throws to put VMI on top for good, but the Keydets had to knock away a long inbound pass into the frontcourt to secure the win.

Williams scored 30 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Travis Holmes notched his third double-double of the season as he led the Keydets with 13 rebounds. Junior guard Chavis Holmes added 22 points and drained six of ten 3- point tries for the Keydets, who connected on 15 treys for the game.

VMI survived a 3-point barrage by CSU, which hit 17 triples on 43 attempts, including a school-record eight 3-pointers each for senior guard Chris Moore and freshman guard Jamarco Warren. Moore led the Bucs with 28 points while Warren finished with 26.

He was named Big South Player of the Week on Jan. 7 after hitting the game-winner with 4.6 seconds left against Mercer on Jan. 2.

Holmes was a perfect 6-of-6 from three-point land against Columbia Union and hit his first two tries against Army to extend his string to eight straight bombs before missing later in the first half.

Holmes’ six triples against Columbia Union tied a career-high and was the fourth time he had accomplished the feat.

He once again matched his career-high against Howard, hitting six treys on his way to 24 points.

Holmes now sits third in career three-pointers made with 189, needing 18 to surpass Ramon Williams for the school’s career lead.

Holmes’ 13 rebounds against both Howard and Charleston Southern represented a career- high for Holmes, who has raised his rebounding average (4.9 to 6.3) and free throw percentage (.684 to .775) from last season.

Kenon’s run began when he gave VMI a lift in early December with four three-pointers for 12 points against Army.

Kenon hit three of his triples to help VMI rally from a 16-point second half deficit and take a brief lead late in the game before falling to the Black Knights. Senior forward Reggie Williams currently leads the Big South with a 27.6 scoring average, and is looking to become just the second player in Big South history to lead the Conference in scoring in consecu- tive seasons. Williams paced the League (and the nation) with a Big South-record 28.1 scoring mark in 2006-07. Coastal Carolina’s Keke Hicks led the Big South in scoring in back-to-back years in 1993-94 (22.4) and 1994-95 (21.1).

Last season, Reggie Williams took the world of College Basketball by storm, topping the national scoring charts on his way to several recognitions.

This season, he was honored with numerous presea- son honors, including VMI’s first-ever nomination for the John R. Wooden Award, college basketball’s most prestigious honor.

After leading the country with a 28.1 points- per-game average, Williams was not only named to the Big South’s All-Conference First Team, but also received recognition from the NABC, who tabbed the forward to their District 4 Second Team.

A season ago, Williams became the first VMI player to lead the nation in scoring since Jason Conley became the first freshman in NCAA history to lead Division I in scoring with a 29.3 average during the 2001-02 season.

Williams now sits 2nd on the school's scoring list with 2,302 points. In the Big South recordbook, Williams is now the all-time leading scorer after passing Larry Blair’s total of 2,211 points.

In 103 career contests, Williams has averaged 22.3 points per outing, eclipsing the 20-point mark 56 times while topping 30 points 23 times. He is the only Keydet to post multiple 40-point games, as he has now done so six times. He is also the only play- er in Big South history to have as many as three 40- plus point games in his career.

Despite the amazing numbers regularly put up by the Keydets, the team is no stranger to very close games. And a season ago, such contests were unkind to the Keydets, as they went 2-9 in games decided by five points or less, and only 1-4 in games of two points or less.

To begin this season, it looked like the trend would continue, as the team lost its first three games decided by two points or fewer.

But since a 71-69 loss at Richmond on Dec.

30, the Keydets have pulled out both a three-point win against Mercer and a two-point triumph in overtime against Charleston Southern, both on the road no less.

Overall this season, the Keydets are now 2-3 in games decided by five points or less and 1-3 in games decided by two points or fewer.

A season after seeing Mercer claim a 105- 103 win at Cameron Hall, the Keydets got their revenge on the Bears by scoring a thrilling, 102- 99 triumph in Macon, Ga. on Jan. 2.

While senior forward Reggie Williams col- lected his seventh double-double of the season with a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds, Chavis Holmes contributed 24 points while Travis Holmes chipped in with 22. That marked the sec- ond time this season that VMI has had three play- ers with at least 20 points in a game.

After trailing by four at halftime, the Keydets scored 65 points in the second half, the most against a Division I opponent in a half this season.

That led to VMI’s first win of the season when trail- ing at the half, while it also marked the Keydets’

first win when trailing with five minutes to go since the team’s Big South Quarterfinal win against Liberty last February.

VMI bounced back from disappointing set- backs to Army and South Carolina State with a dominating performance against Howard, spurred by a defensive effort that saw the Bison score only 59 points.

The 59 points allowed by VMI are the fewest since Feb. 18, 2006, when the Keydets dropped a 59-48 decision to Charleston Southern.

Additionally, VMI’s 36-point margin of victo- ry was the largest against a Division I opponent since the Keydets defeated The Citadel 91-52 on Feb. 5, 1996.

While suffering a 90-57 loss to Ohio State, VMI was held to their lowest offensive output in a year and a half, dating back to a 59-48 loss to Charleston Southern on Feb. 18, 2006.

In addition, the Keydets tied a school record while making only two free throws in the contest, equalling a mark that has been achieved four other times since 1953 and last done in 1991.

The Keydets’ 30.1% shooting from the floor also marked the lowest that the team has posted since beginning their current style of play prior to the 06-07 campaign. In fact, the team’s shooting was the worst by a Keydet team since shooting only 27.6% at Old Dominion in a 86-38 loss on Dec. 1, 2004.

With a 90-83 win against JMU on Nov. 21, the Keydets claimed their first win in over 19 sea- sons against the Dukes, snapping an eight-game skid in the series.

Senior Reggie Williams collected VMI’s first double-double of the season, scoring 30 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, as he also had a season-high seven assists in his 17th career dou- ble-double outing. Other double-digit outings for the Keydets included 18 points from junior Travis Holmes and 11 from freshman Christian Hunter.

VMI led, 77-67, following a Travis Holmes layup with 5:26 remaining, but the Dukes answered with a 14-4 run over the next three min- utes to pull even on a pair of free throws by Abdulai Jalloh to even the score at 81-81 at the 2:27 mark.

The Keydets outscored JMU, 9-2, the rest of the way and took the lead for good on seven con- secutive points including six straight by Williams to start the run. A Williams layup with 1:57 left fol- lowed by two free throws and a dunk from the senior pushed the Keydets lead to 87-81 and Travis Holmes converted one of two free throws seconds later to cap the run.

James Madison hit just one of five shots from the floor over the last 2:27 of regulation, and a Kyle Swanston jumper at the :20 mark to cut the deficit to 88-83 was as close as the Dukes would come down the stretch.

The win gave VMI its first win over a CAA team since defeating Towson on Dec. 21, 2005, 80-78. The Keydets also improved to 6-1 against JMU at home.

The new deal includes a salary raise and other benefits.

“I am extremely happy that Duggar Baucom

said VMI Athletic Director Donny White. “Under his leadership, our team has made great strides and I feel that he can make us a consistent winner.”

In 2006-07, Baucom led his second-year team to a banner season and national acclaim.
