RickaRd LindgRen (1971) received his medical degree in 1997 from the Faculty of Health Sciences, Linköping University. After completing his internship at Örebro University Hospital, he started his surgical training at the Department of Surgery, Karlskoga Hospital. His surgical training was completed at the Department of Surgery, Örebro University Hospital, where he currently is working as a consultant surgeon at the Colorectal Unit. He was registered as a PhD student at Örebro University in 2007. His research focuses on rectal cancer and associate professor Peter Matthiessen has been his research supervisor.

Rectal cancer is a common malignant disease where surgical removal of the tumor is the main treatment. Despite improved results during the last decades, rectal cancer treatment is still associated with high morbidity and mortality. This thesis presents four studies designated to improve the understanding of anastomotic leakage, anorectal function and defunctioning stomas, in patients operated on with low anterior resection of the rectum due to cancer.
