Teenage pregnancies are often not intended and there is a high risk that unintended pregnancies will lead to abortion. Introduction in Sweden of new and effective contraceptives has failed to lower the abortion rates. Contraceptive failure in teenagers who have had an abortion may be due in part to lack of knowledge about how to use contraceptives and in part because of unacceptable side effects. Guidance about contra-ceptive use from health care providers, parents, partners and friends is important.

The aim of this thesis was to study possible risk groups and to highlight underlying reasons for contraceptive failure.
