CULTURAL BEACON

a culture and civic center in Halmstad

CHARLES GÅRDEMAN

(2)
(3)

The project aims to elevate Halmstad’s historical and contemporary culture.

Today, the artistic practice is conducted in separate and closed of cultural clusters. By givning the city a new addition, the Cultural Beacon, the project aims to work in two ways. The first is “to be seen”, in order to attract people of Halmstad to engage and practice its culture. The second is “to show”, in order to illuminate what already is there, and to build upon the resources in the existing cultural clusters. By doing so, the new addition does not only nurture the practice of the city’s culture, but even more important, it nurtures the exchange of culture both between individuals and the collectives, in order to create a more open and inviting city for its residents and visitors to take in.

The program of the building consists of three parts. The maker space (to engage the city’s residents in cultural activities), the workers space (to support the existing cultural clusters with space for producing and rehearsing) and the exhibition space (to showcase the story of the city’s culture). These work both separately and collectively in order to link different groups of people and encourage cultural exchange.

SITE ANALYSIS The site used to be a major central bus station. Since it has moved, the square has been turned in to a temporary pop-up park.

Current plans to create a combined hotel and conference center at this site has already been set in motion.

My project will use the dashed square as its boarders.

SYNERGIES OF CUL TURAL PROGRAMS

THE BRIDGE Hovering over the ground in between the courtyard and the square, this becomes an extended public indoor space, linking the outdoor programs as well as the indoor programs.

THE INTERLOCKING STAIRS The circular movement continues both on the inside and the outside of the building to connect the buildings different programs.

THE GROUND FLOOR Through its openings to its courtyard, the building becomes a node to transfer through as well as to transfer to. Its large windows invite passersby to be a part of its transparent and open content.

THE EVENT HALL As one of the main attraction points, the space gives the city a new platform to bring together its residents for larger happenings, in order to make the city alive all year round.

THE STUDIOS Arrayed next to each other, the studios offer a wide range of creative spaces for the public to use as they wish. From pottery classes to 3D-printing facilities, the residents can channel their creativity.

THE SKY GALLERY As the cherry on top, the combined gallery and historical museum tells the story of the city, both through its interior exhibitions as well as through its exteriors views over the city.

THE VISITOR New to the city, the Cultural Beacon becomes an obvious site to stop by. Not only to take in the spectacular views of the city, but also to see the city’s collective creative practices in

order to take in Halmstad’s culture. THE CULTURAL WORKER

The existing cultural clusters of Halmstad has a good base to stand on, but lacks a few keystones to elevate their creations. Through the Cultural Beacon, they find a space to both produce and exhibit their crafts, in order to reach out to a wider range of the city’s residents.

THE RESIDENT Since Halmstad’s residents are a core part of its culture, the residents are given a new building where they are able to take on an active engagement of the shaping of their individual and collective practicing of the culture.
