system represents a whole new generation of cost-effective integral controllers, providing major advances in system integration and ergonomics. It combines the cost effectiveness of an integral controller with
the functionality of a much more expensive remote system. The VSI
effectively closes the traditional gap between integral controllers and remote systems, and can be thought of as a ‘Super Integral’. There are multiple versions of the VSI available to provide everything from a basic 50A, cost effective, drive controller right up to a 70A boost drive with built-in 2 seat actuator control.
Despite these major advances in power and function, style has not been compromised and the VSI continues the aesthetic elegance that has become a hallmark of PG Drives Technology’s products.

The VSI is available in two power ratings - 50A and 50A with a 70A boost. The 70A boost facility can be used to provide extra current for hill starts and kerb climbing.
Whereas 50A is quite normal for a controller of this class, the 70A capability means the VSI is suitable for some wheelchairs where remote systems have previously been necessary. New drive control techniques offer excellent performance, in particular on inclines where full steerability is assured and roll-back greatly reduced. As would be expected from an established mobility specialist there is excellent response to joystick commands. Maximum speed adjustment is achieved simply via two digital up-down push-buttons. Alternatively, if preferred, these buttons can be programmed to select up to five full drive profiles. A horn is included as standard. The proven and familiar PGDT TruCharge battery gauge and diagnostic functions are maintained, reducing the level of training required for service personnel.
Safety fence values can be applied to put limits around the field programmable speed, acceleration and deceleration parameters, and so reduce the risk of incorrect programming causing a hazardous situation.

Much consideration has been given to the control panel layout to ensure it meets the needs of most users. The TruCharge battery gauge and maximum speed setting displays are intentionally located at the top of the panel, this ensures they are unlikely to be obscured by the user’s hand when the joystick is deflected. The dimension from joystick to the switches has been maximized to reduce the risk of accidental switch operation. The order of the switches has also been carefully chosen so those most likely to be operated while driving are closest to the joystick. Super bright LEDs have been selected to improve the visibility of the user displays, even in the brightest sunlight.

ACTUATOR CONTROL
The VSI can directly power up to 2 seat adjustment actuators.
Until now this functionality has required a 3 module remote system, this system integration clearly offers a more cost effective approach.
Actuator control mode is entered by operating either of the two actuator pushbuttons; selection and movement of the actuators is then through operation of the joystick. To increase user comfort, actuator speeds are programmable. A full 10A per actuator is provided and automatic end-stop detection removes the power to the actuator at the end of seat’s movement.
EXTENDED FUNCTIONALITY
A simple-to-program short throw joystick function makes the VSI suitable for users with limited hand movement. The set up is interactive, whereby the user pushes the joystick as far as they can in each direction and the maximum values are stored in the controller. Two universal inputs can be configured to provide a dedicated on-board charger inhibit (OBC), three stage speed reductions for elevating seats or a seat reversal function for wheelchairs with rotating seats to swap between rear and front wheel drive. A software timer records the numbers of hours the wheelchair is being driven, providing invaluable data for service engineers and manufacturers.
The pushbutton technology has been chosen for its light actuation force, and button size has been kept as large as practical. A successful button actuation is indicated to the user with an audible bleep, the volume of which is programmable to ensure it is informative but not intrusive. The function of the maximum speed or profile buttons is programmable, such that they can be disabled while driving.
An electronic locking sequence can be used to prevent unautho- rized use of the wheelchair. This sequence comprises of a simple combination of button presses and joystick movements, eliminating the need for a key that can be easily lost.

To offer the powerchair manufacturer the most convenient and cost effective solution, a number of different configurations of the VSI are offered. For basic drive only systems, Beau or ‘pig- tail’ versions are available. The Beau version emulates the existing PGDT Pilot controller and is popular on foldable powerchairs.
The ‘pigtail’ version eliminates the need for a wiring loom between the controller, motors and batteries, meaning total installation costs are reduced. For on-board charger (OBC), universal input or actuator systems, then a ‘pigtail’ version is required to provide con- nections for these extra functions.

All versions of the PP1a Handheld Dealer pro- grammer can be used with the VSI control system.
For a more user-friendly approach, a hardware interface and supporting software are available to allow the VSI to be programmed via a PC. Using a familiar Windows type format, parameters can be stored as files, edited or copied. This PC programming provides dealers, therapists and wheelchair OEMs with a quick and convenient programming method in customer, user assessment, development and production environments.
