The author complains of the slackening spirit of his sect. Ho quotes, by way of introduction, what is said in favour of religious contention in the Koran, to which he subjoins an account of the various disputes of the Prophet with idolaters, Jews, and Christians.

He then proceeds to relate at great length the claims and arguments of 'All, and subsequently thoso of the other Imams in succession. Each of them is repre¬

sented as pleading his cause in speeches and disputa¬

tions, or in letters. Tho work is accordingly divided into sections (J-ai), each of which is inscribed.. j-l^ls-'

author docs not give his name; but as he professes to be a disciple of the famous Ibn Taimiyah Ilanbali (d. a.h. 728), ho is veiy probably Shams al-din Muhammad b. Abu Bakr Dimishki Hanball, commonly called Iiin Kaiyim al-JauzIvah (d. a.h. 751).' A work of this author, with the title zjJ\ , is mentioned by H. Kh. v. 88,' and with this the present treatise appeurs to be identical. Itisbased on twenty-one questions, though by mistake only nineteen arc counted in the present MS.
