I kapitel 1 visade vi att det finns mycket tidigare forskning inom ämnen som motivation, belöningar och prestation. Däremot finns inte tidigare forskning kring universitetet som ett meritokratiskt system. Vi kunde därav identifiera ett kunskapsbehov att lokalisera medarbetare i olika befattningar och beskriva hur de uppfattar motivation, återkoppling, prestation, belöning och befordran. Genom vår studie har vi bidragit med kunskap och en ökad förståelse kring hur medarbetare på ett svenskt universitet ser kopplingen mellan just dessa.
Vi hoppas att studien inspirerar till vidare forskning om hur medarbetare med långsiktiga mål och tydliga karriärvägar kan uppfatta styrning. Vår studie har bland annat visat att medarbetarna upplever att det finns koppling mellan prestationer och befordran på Luleå tekniska universitet. Men att kopplingen är tydligare och starkare när det gäller meriteringar inom forskning än undervisning. Vi har även under studiens gång uppmärksammat att det finns ackrediterade universitet vilka har krav på att lärare ska ha en uppdaterad forskningsportfölj för att få undervisa. Därav är vårt förslag till vidare forskning att undersöka om medarbetarnas uppfattning gällande kopplingen mellan meritering och befordran skiljer sig åt mellan ett trippelackrediterat universitet samt ett universitet utan ackreditering. Ytterligare förslag till vidare forskning är att använda en liknande problemformulering som i denna studie för att undersöka fenomenet i en annan bransch i vilken det också finns en tydlig karriärväg. Slutligen skulle en kvantitativ studie med exempelvis enkäter kunna genomföras för att försöka kartlägga meriter och meritering.
