Ur vetenskaplig synvinkel är det angeläget att mätinstrument inte är utformade på olika sätt, när resultaten från olika studier, såväl nationella som internationella, ska jämföras med var- andra. Det är därför viktigt med fortsatt forskning inom området oralhälsorelaterad livskvali- tet, bland annat för att studera användbarheten av olika instrument vid olika typer av studier. Ett viktigt steg i den fortsatta forskningen är därför att undersöka reliabilitet och validitet för en svensk version av OHIP-14. Därigenom skapas förutsättningar för systematiska och jäm- förbara nationella registreringar av oralhälsorelaterad livskvalitet.

Det är också angeläget att studera sambanden mellan kliniska variabler och oralhälsorelaterad livskvalitet. Författarens egen fortsatta forskning syftar till att studera dessa samband när det gäller OHIP-14 och kliniska variabler. En ökad kunskap om samspelet mellan professionens bedömningar av oralt status och individens uppfattningar om hur detta påverkar hälsa och livskvalitet, kan bredda bilden av oral hälsa som en kombination av ett biostatistiskt och ett holistiskt perspektiv och bidra till en god, patientcentrerad tandvård.
