Genom att l˚ata anv¨andarna l¨ara sig att bygga i virtuell verklighet i en applikation byggd f¨or ¨andam˚alet s˚a anser deltagarna att det ¨ar m¨ojligt att l¨ara sig montera en byggsats. Anv¨andaren f˚ar i applikationen l¨ara sig montera en byggsats genom hand-ledning i form av ljudinstruktioner och uplysningar var det ¨ar m¨ojligt att placera n¨asta objekt. Deltagarna i studien menar p˚a att de har f¨orst˚att hur en byggsats ska monteras genom applikationen d¨ar de tar med sig i vilken ordning byggsatsen monteras i, var objekt ska placeras. De n¨amner ¨aven att de f¨orst˚att att det ¨ar viktigt att f¨asta alla delar innan man g˚ar vidare. Deltagarna belyser att virtuell verklighet ¨ar utomordent-ligt f¨or att l¨ara sig nya saker. I virtuell verklighet f˚ar man se och g¨ora vilket enligt deltagarna g¨or att det s¨atter sig p˚a muskelminnet hur det ska genomf¨oras till skillnad fr˚an se och l¨ara d¨ar man bara l¨ar sig komma ih˚ag.

Trots att virtuell verklighet ¨ar bra f¨or att l¨ara sig nya saker anser deltagarna att de in-te skulle v˚aga montera samma byggsats i verkligheten med enbart informationen fr˚an applikationen. De upplever inte att virtuell verklighet ¨ar nog verklighets f¨orankrat vilket troligtvis beror p˚a att virtuell verklighet ¨ar en ny teknik d¨ar deltagarna inte har nog med personlig erfarenhet kring att l¨ara sig i. Att inte vara tillr¨ackligt stark i verkligheten eller ha f¨orm˚agan att hantera samma verktyg i verkligheten som i virtuell verklighet ¨ar n˚agot som g¨or att deltagarna inte v˚agar montera i verkligheten.

Det ¨ar troligtvis den tekniska kvalit´en som begr¨ansar anv¨andarnas upplevelses, tekni-ken finns tillg¨anglig men det ¨ar hur v¨al tekniken anv¨ands och ˚aterspeglar verkligheten som ¨ar avg¨orande f¨or upplevelsen kring att l¨ara sig montera i virtuell verklighet.

English summary

The users concluded that it is possible to increase their knowledge about how to assemble a building through virtual reality. Virtual reality is good for learning new practical work but doesn’t give enough experience so that it feels safe to do the same work in the real world, according to the parti-cipants.

Virtual reality is accessible for consumers nowadays and could be used for learning traditional work. How the users experience that they learn through virtual reality is important to study. The users experience is crucial for the virtual reality’s future to replace traditional learning such as learning through paper manuals and practical exercising.

Background

A company in the wood industry that sells building modules where the customer on their own hand assembling the building with help of paper manuals, wished an investigation if there is possibility to translate the paper manual to virtual reality.

Through the virtual reality there should be possible to learn how to assemble a building and then do the same process in the real world. Many people know what virtual reality is but hasn’t experienced having a headset on the head and interact with virtual objects. What’s the first-time users thoughts about virtual reality and does virtual reality give enough experience in relation with assembling a building in reality?

Method

The methods during the study was divided in to two parts, a software created in Unity3D with HTC Vive where it is possible through interaction and visualization assemble a building. The second method was to perform interviews with users who according them self has low experience with assembling buildings and low experience

with virtual reality. The participants in the study performed the task in the applica-tion where they got instrucapplica-tions through texts and audio and finished with answering a few questions about how they felt about virtual reality, their experience about as-sembling a building and if they consider that they are able after the learning part in the application assemble the building for real. The interviews that was held was done by open interviews where the participants should lead the conversation by discussion about some predetermined themes.

Implementation

The implementation consisted of identifying which moments of a real building assembly that is crucial for assembling a building safe and that it would stand by itself. The esthetics such as gutter and ridge plate was excluded. The moments implemented needs to be performed in a certain order and after every moment the user marks the moment as finished and gets a percent which shows how much of the current moment that was finished correct. VRTK was used to implement HTC Vive in Unity3D and it provided a lot of functionality such as interaction and teleportation. The objects visualized in the application is modelled in Unity3D or downloaded from Lundqvist Tr¨avaru AB. All the models are customized to ideal sizes for easier handling for the user.

All objects are placed in snap zones, when the object in placed therein the objects snaps perfectly in place. When the object is placed some nail points lights up. In the nail point there is possible to interact with the nail gun to attach the object with a nail. When the object is attached there is not possible to grab the object anymore.

The application consists of three modes, exercise, challenge and time attack. During the exercise the user gets instructions by audio, texts and highlighted snap zones so that the user sees in beforehand where the current moments objects should be placed.

During the challenge mode the user doesn’t get any feedback in beforehand and a snap zone is only visualized when the supposed object is in the zone. Time attack is the same as challenge but consist of a timer where the user can see the elapsed time of the assembling.

Evaluation

The result is beside the implementation a study about the users experience of as-sembling a building. The participants in the study said that it was very cool to do a practical work in virtual reality. For some participants the virtual reality became their reality and they forgot the real world for a moment. Overall, they think that virtual reality is good for learning new things because the ability of see and do instead of see and learn. The interaction in virtual reality where the user becomes very strong and

can lift heavy objects with one hand is concluded to be fine. This because the users feel that this is still a game and have in mind that in reality there is no possibility to lift with one hand and the movements is limited to the controllers so one controller needs to be free and used for teleportation. The users wouldn’t after the exercise in the application dare to assemble the building for real.

A parallel study was done where the focus was to observe if there is possible to learn assemble a building through virtual reality. This was done by letting the users perform the mode exercise end thereafter the mode challenge. During the challenge the users percent was studied and most of the users got 100% as result.

This shows that the participants can learn through virtual reality and it can be related with theirs statements about that they learned how to assembly a building but not enough for real.

Discussion

The participants tell that they wouldn’t dare to do the assembling process in real world with only the instructions from the application despite their statements about that it is better to see and do, than seeing and learn. One aspect is that the users stills sees the application as a game and there is no possibility to do wrong. It should be a feature where the user can assembly wrong and correct the mistake. For now, the application leads the user to much and it is possible to chance and do correct without reflecting why the piece should be placed there. The result raises new questions like How can the feeling that virtual reality is a game be removed? and Is the user able to assembly a building despite that they don’t think that?

The result in relation with previous research is trustworthy. The result is like what related works has concluded and the participants in this study had similar statements about how they experienced virtual reality which proving the trustworthy.

The interviews were held directly after that the participants had completed the exercise mode. The exercise mode took approximately about 45 minutes for each par-ticipant. My opinion is that the participants were sometimes very short in their answers to the themes. Maby that depends on that they were exhausted after virtual reality and should have rested for a moment and let the thoughts melt before the interview.
