States from Ontario, Canada, and worked as an apprentice blacksmith. When he had saved up a sum of money, he went to the railroad ticket office and told them he wanted a ticket for as far west as his money would take him. It took him to Chyenne where he continued working as a blacksmith. In
1876, he heard that the town of Loveland, Colorado, was in need of a blacksmith, so he took the train to Greeley (the end of the line) and then a stage to Loveland. He
homesteded in the area and his brothers followed him to Colorado.
William H. Farr got into the lamb feeding business thanks to an early blizzard that caught them with about 500 yearlings on the home place as they were being driven to Denver for shipment to the east. He had hay and barley enough to feed them through the winter and found that they gained about 20 pounds each on the program.
Farr Farms became one of the largest lamb feeding operations in the United States with lots at Greeley, Scottsbluff,
Nebraska and Torrington, Wyoming.
w.
H. founded FarrProduce Company to store and ship potatoes, and was also the first farm implement dealer in Colorado.
w.
D. Farr attended the University of Wisconsin but the illness of his father, Harry Farr, brought him back to the family business. He had worked on a ranch during highmarket had eroded and he built a cattle feeding pen for 125 of cattle. By 1980, Farr Feeders were operating a 144-pen facility, 2 grassland ranches, and 6 farms growing potatoes, sugar beets, alfalfa, pinto beans, corn for both grain and silage, oats and onions.
When he was still a young man, Bill Farr became interested in the water development of Northern Colorado. When the Colorado-Big Thompson authorization election was to go
before the voters, he joined those pushing for its passage. "I went with them, did the driving, and we took a dog and pony show and went up to Wellington and Fort Collins and put on a pep rally and told them how they ought to vote 'yes' on this ... finally the election came and it went 17 to 1 in
favor; so I started litterally with (Colorado-Big Thompson)"

Bromley (Issue Two, 1990).Delayed by World War II, the project did not run its first water through a temporary pipeline until 1954. Farr was elected to the board of the Northern Colorado water
Conservancey District in 1955 and has served ever since---a total of 36 years when his term ends in 1991.
His grandfather, as a member of Greeley's City Council early in the century, had been instrumental in building the city's first water treatment plant. Bill, once regional
water supplies were assured through Colorado-Big Thompson, turned his attention to the Greeley water system building on what his grandfather had begun. He became the first
chairperson of the Greeley Water and Sewer Board in 1958, a postion he still holds. He was also a prime mover in the Windy Gap Project (dedicated June 29, 1985) in which the cities of Greeley, Fort Collins, Loveland, Boulder and
Longmont banded together to form a municipal Subdistrict of the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District to help meet the water supply to the rapidly growing area of the Front Range.
A former Greeley city manger, Peter Morell believes the Windy Gap project is reflective of the characteristics of
