Years of Nurs_

ing Education

1904 January, our school known as Deaconess Hospital Training School, opened with nurse superintendent Miss Caroline Rotis, and one probationer student nurse to care for the first patients. The Colorado Conferences Deaconess Hospital was operated by the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Colorado Conference of the Methodist Church.

1911 July 1, the new Beth-El Hospital, 1400 E. Boulder, was dedicated. The school became known as Beth-El Hospital Training School.

1943 The hospital was purchased by the City of Colorado Springs and renamed Memorial in memory of the men and women who died in World War II.

The nursing school retained it's identity of Beth-El School of Nursing. 1984 We were pleased to share our 80th Anniversary celebration with the com

-munity of Colorado Springs. We had several exhibits of photographs and artifacts from the Beth-El Archives displayed throughout the city.

-Pioneer's Museum had a major, six week display, March 11th through April 29th. The gala opening party was held on March 14th.

-Penrose Library Local History, East Branch Library and Novis Frame Art Gallery had exhibits of pictures and small artifacts. -Beth-El's Anniversary party for our friends and colleagues of

Memorial Hospital was held in the main concourse near our three display cases on March 12, 1984.

-Colorado Springs Mayor Robert Isaac proclaimed the week of March 11th "Beth-El Nurses Week".

-The Beth-El Banquet honoring the Seniors was May 11th at the Peterson Field NCO Club. Graduation ceremonies will be held on May 25th at Benet Hill Center and the Alumni Homecoming Banquet on June 16th at the Palmer House.

The Beth-El tradition of quality nursing education and caring was firmly established by the early Deaconess Training School. During the 80 years we have shared significant life events with thousands of Colorado Springs families. For some there are very personal vignettes and recollections which come alive as they remember earlier days with us. The process of rediscovering our history has lead to some unexpected personal rewards for Beth-El families. There is a deep sense of pride as we realize the depth of individual commitments expressed throughout our 80 year history. As we remember together we renew friendships and kindle a new sense of value for what we share in common. This is our anniversary gift to all of us.

A srecial note of thanks to Jo Ruth who did such a beautiful job of coordinating the activities. She spent a great deal of time (and effort) in getting photos, captions, and artifacts ready for Beth-El's display. Jo has every reason for being proud of her accomplishments. Jo is now the official Archivist for Beth-El. Thanks, Jo for making our celebration so exciting.

Class of 1914

70 Year Graduates

The new Beth-El Hospital had

opened in July 1911 when the probationary students, who were the class of 1914/ entered Bethel Training School For Nurses. Marguerite Younkers McBeth remembers her student days. "Our first uniforms were blue with white

cuffs and white aprons with bibs.

We received our caps after 3 months.

We did not pay tuition. The hospital

gave us two or three dol lars a month.

Staff doctors were our instructors.•

"We went on duty at 7:00A.M., to 7:00P.M. with two and a half hours off

duty each day. We had a half day off each week with an additional half day on Sunday, if possible."

Marguerite recalled the Childrens Pavilion, a small wooden "open air"

building on the northeast corner of the hospital property, which housed

children who were undernourished and had special health needs. "I nursed out there on night duty in the winter. We had to take extra bedding to keeo the children warm. At one time we night nurses slept in the pavilion."

Class of 1934

50 Year Graduates

Remember the green oil cloth bibs with rl our names on them that we had to wear during~ "probie" initiation days? Our Contagion Hospital experience required very strict isolation technique. We even had to live at "C:::>ntagion," during that rotation.

Remember night duty at the "San"? We had to use the stairs at night because the elevator would wake the patients.

Our nursing director, Mary K. Smith, and instructress,Mrs. Georgia Shanstrom

held morning services for us in the chapel before reporting for duty. ~ The patients enjoyed listening to our hymns. Miss Smith took advantage of

the opportunity to impert her nursing wisdom to all of us. We remember our days at Beth-El fondly

PROGRESS NOTES

Twas the eighteenth of August and all through the school,

student nurses were gathering, to learn the new rules.

New books were passed out by faculty with care, the weight almost more than we were able to bear.

Sleep_P.attern Dis.t.u.r.J2.an.c..e kept us out of our beds, as we studied and crammed knowledge into our heads.

In between all the bookwork we tried to take naps, but a Knowledge Deficit kept us from enjoying a lapse.

Ineffective Coping was apparent and the staff asked, "What's gone

wrong?" We said, "Our bodies are weary and this semester seems way too

long!!"

We went into surgery and feared the knife's incision, as the surgeon

would skillfully make his decision.

As we dressed in our scrubs, we all had a good laugh; a Self-Concept Disturbance we knew would soon pass.

Christmas finally came, causing some Dysfunctional Grieving, at the thought of our instructors and clinical groups now leaving.

The holidays have passed, we're now back at school, investigating psychology and expressing our feel ings as a rule.

Before long we'll be seniors, and as we look back at this year,

we'll know in our hearts we were glad to be here.

Mama and Daddy - for the encouragement, support,

for always loving me and helping me to see the humorous

side of everything.

Wendy and Julie - for being my friends, pests,

Lori, Deb, and the Angels - thanks for having so

Paulette Wirt, G.N.

I love you, not only for what you are,

I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself,

but for what you are making of me.

I love you for ignoring the possibilities of the fool in me

I love you because you have done more than any creed to make me happy.

You have done it without a word, without a touch, without a sign. You have done it by just being yourselves.

Life is like a game of chess. It is full of choices and moves.

Some of us play the game and make all the wrong moves.

Others of us just get lucky.

While others stop, think, and suddenly, "checkmate". Three years ago I had a dream.

For the next three years, I made choices, made moves, weighed the risks and rewards, set priorities and

played the game.

But no matter how we play, the game, the moves, choices, and the rewards could not have occurred without the board, no choices are possible,

no moves could be made.

My game board was my family and home. They provided a base, a platform, from wh i ch I fl ew.

Love, Sandy

My first assignment.

REFLECTIONS:

I hold fond memories of these past three years. To say I will never forget the fun times or the trials we experienced together doesn't serve the

heart felt feelings. The friendships I have made will stay with me the rest of my life and if not in reality then in the reflections of my memory. Thanks to my friends for the encouragement when

I needed an emotional or physical boost. If I were to characterize our cl ass it would, iri part1

have to read, "t~hen the going got tough, we met the cha 11 enge and survived with our heads held

high". Special thanks to those closest to me who, ~ithout your support and understanding this

important event in my life would be less than the fantastic experience it has been!

Yes, I will reflect on these past three years with emotion because of the people that helped make the memories ....

Most of all to my husband,George. You entered my life and became

so much a part of it so quickly. I thank you for the extra hugs,

coping with late nights, and helping me realize a dream.

Thanks to all of you who believed in me and helped me believe in

Never Give Up On a Dream

If there's doubt and you're cold,

Don't you worry what the future holds. We gotta have heroes to teach us all To Never Give Up On a Dream.

When the road touched the sun,

No thoughts on earth could stop your run. When your heart bursts like the sun

Never, Never Give Up On a Dream.

Shadows fall, Daylight Dawns.

Freedom never gotta place to hide.

Search forever, for the finish line.

But, never give up on your dream

Crazy notions fill your head,

You gotta break all the records set.

Push yourself until the end,

But don't you ever give up on your Dream.

You don't need no restrictions,

You can't live on sympathy.

You just need to go the distance.

That's all you need to be free.

Starting off to never lose,

It'll take a long, long time to fill your shoes.

It'll take somebody who's a lot like you, Who never gave up on a dream.

Rod Stewart Give to my eyes

Light to see those in need.

Give to my heart

compassion and understanding.

Give to my mind

knowledge and wisdom.

Give to my hands

skill and tenderness.

Give to my ears

the ability to listen.

Give to my lips

words of comfort. Give to my spirit

the desire to share.

Give to me, Lord,

strength for this s~lfl~ss service

and enable me to bring JOY to the lives of those I serve.

We travel down the familar halls

Day by day.

In each person, each room, each moment, We taste the moist bittersweetness of Learning.

We confront new ideals, discuss ideas,

Question tradition.

All the time moving upward, Not sure where we're going But moving just the same.

Expanding becoming, searching. Forming strangers into friends. While working on careplans, creating a yearbook.

v/atching "All my children".

Sharing the same jokes, Lunches, tears, classes. Classes become experiences, Teachers become friends.

We have slowly become spontaneous, Almost become ourselves.

We have split the world wide open

And found the priceless and permanent gift: EXPERIENCE.

We discover that the future is now.

Speak Gently

Speak gently: It is better far To rule by love than fear

Speak gently: Let no harsh words mar

The good we might do here.

Speak gently to the little child,

It's love be sure to gain,

Teach it in accents soft and mild

It may not long remain.

Speak gently to the aged one,

Grieve not the careworn heart; The sands of life are nearly run, Let such in peace depart.

Speak gently, kindly to the poor;

Let no harsh tone be heard.

They have enough they must endure Without an unkind word.

Speak gently to the erring; know

They must have toiled in vain; Perchance unkindness made them so,

Oh, win them back again.

Speak gently then to everyone And offer friendships hand;

Now add a smile: when this is don

e-Love will bloom throughout the land. David Bates

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there

is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubting, let me bring your faith. Where there is darkness, your light. Where there is disparing, let me bring your hope. Where there is sadness, your joy.

Oh Divine Master, grant that I might

seek not so much to be consoled as

to console. To be understood as to

understand. Not so much to be loved

as to love another.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are

par-doned, and it is in dying that we

are born to eternal life.

(St. Francis of Assisi)

As I embark on a new adventure, may

The management and staff join together with our residents in saying THANKS to our

many friends for their remembrances throughout the year.

A special THANKS to the many people in our community who have devoted so much time, energy and talent and who do so much priceless volunteer work. Their efforts do not go unnoticed.

Many THANKS to the carolers, dancing groups and their sponsors making it possible

for the younger children to participate.

We look forward to the challenges and accomplishments of the year to come. If

As this book ends, we look back and thank the following people

for their contribution and participation: Mary Tatem, Eddy Baleria, Karen

Galliher, Gale Conti-Wilson, and especially Jo Ruth for her constant support encouragement, and enthusiam.

As students you hold one thing we all have in common. Do with

it as you please. Read it, reminisce with it, enjoy it. We hope that as you look back at this yearbook only fond memories will come to mind.

The 1984 Beth- El Chart is something we can all be very proud of.

Sincerely,
