Pest Control and Dairy Impro~ement

:Fest Control embraoad the killing of

prairie

dogs of which

there seemed to be millions. Several pest district were formed

ana. active organized efforts ere made to lessen the numb r of dogs

in those districts.

Dairy

Improvement

bein the next project of importance we..s begun ttrough organizing a Cow Testing Association dth the purpose in mind. of improving the dairy business th.rough weeding out

oa.rder cows and instructing the

dairymen

in

the

advantages

gained b_' keeping records on the individual l1embers of their herds. Altho:-gh the testers proved very unaatisfi.otory the projeot proved

of ·great value and formed the basis of building the best herds in

the county.

A Farm Bureau was at~irted but nothing seerns to have been accomplished

its efforts, though

it

i. quite l)l"Obable that

had the agont lived muoh good would have been done along

Another County Agent was employed to oarr for mrd the

,ork t:ilready l)Sgun. Another Farm Bu.reo,u was st )irted which fared no

better than the fi.rst. Work was lllap·1Jed out and organized in ea.oh community tn the county. It looked s though th ngs would have

been accomplished had the agent sufficient time to keep in

touch

vd th the vi1rioua orga.nizatione and assisted them t;o carry on to

completion their plans. ·

A Farm Brreau News Bulletin was started and ran Ior four

months,. wind.i.ng up some 254 in debt.

The entire countJ was organized inGo 11est districts.

Fifteen districts in all were :Lormed and ctefini t-e a.ates were set

\Wrk. fter the ··ates set the County Agent, working with the

Co muni ty Cha,ir ..ien and others, :aite a survey o:f the· ,vork done and visited land not poisoned. Most of tlie resident landowners

were ·securec1 from the college making a total of 6,710 gallons of

poison u.sed in the campaign o:r enou~h poiso1 to kill 1,342,000 dogs.

The oontiractor furnished a. complete report of tho work as

to location of land by township, range and portion of section, the

acreage poisoned and: the owner of t.10 land. Afte;r inspection this

A. ·total of 3,700 was set aside by the county to oarry on

the work. sbme of w':ioh w e colleoted back as taxes. It w s esti a.ted

that 98% of dogs were kill.ed on all d :poisoned and 95% of all

One of the most pleasing pieces of

work

accompl!bshed in

1919 was the Boys and Girls Club Work. A great work was oar-ied to

completion with tfav ass1star1ae of County Chairma.n of c1u·b Work. 11:r. G. 1 .. ?? xon and the Girls Club Leader. 1 s, :Maude Hoskins.

hrough this \JOrk 53 boys and girls secured :?u:re bred pigs; 86

enrolled. 1n sev11 ng . ...,nd cooking 3 in corn work, 9 in :poultry, 6 in

sl ee.p, '7 in calf and 2 in potato ellibs. A olub oa.mp was held at

the County Fair and altogether CluL Work was a great success.

A silo campaign ras :planned and an e oursion held. Eight

silos were built as a direot :result of this tri:p.

T~e agent assisted in re-organizing the Cow Testing

Association but ttrough the undesirability of testers the as&oa

!lo definite x·esults "ere Eiccomplished along er p im -provement lines though a few corn vari.e tj tests wero at~irted.

A potato bHke was held on September sevent, 1919. s a result of this

work 6,400 pounds of certified seed potatoes v,ere ordered from

Minnesota by seven. Douglas County far ners. The see a. proved to be very

poor and diseased but enough potatoes were raised to g·ive ns a good

great deal of' the agent's time was taken up in late sum.mer

and fall in. helping make the Coun·ty Fair a success. Here he acted

as secretary and did all clerical vork besides ass1sti.ng in

getting in e:a:h:z.bits. ihe Club work exhibits tended g:rea.tly to

make the Fair a success.

Some 53-laborers we:te placed• thus assisting the :farmers

me~terially in getting their farm work done.

The Agent

left

early in the f~11 £or a similiar position in M:Lssouri · lea.v:i.ng the county without a.in agent until March 1st.

1820. when the co roissionera were able to secure the present

irJoumbent.

The first ten days o:f the new Agent's time E-re s:pent with

various other ~gents getting familiarized with the Colorado plan of County Agent vrnrk.

~he Agent arrived in the county for actual work Jiaroh tenth

1920, ancl. spent the first week in.reorganizing tle office files and general offioe syster1 and

trying

to determine just what had

been done and 'Where

it

was left

off.

Being ttllable to do

this

it was decided tl1e best plan to determine as near as :possible

what the greatest needs and vdshea of the people were and to

follow out this plan and gradually get acquainted with th people and their needs With the plan in mind of gaining the acquaintance

arid confidence of the people in general and get a good working

organization that some re&l dafirdte work might be lined up in

the fall of 1920 in auoh a

way

that a raal constructive program

of

work might be started :for 1921.

i'he 1920 work might be summarized as follows:

A Farm Bure~u was organized with a member~hip
