October, 1954 BIBLIOGRAPHY ISSUE

This issue of the ISMR Bulletin is a joint venture of the Illinois Society for Medical Research and the National Society for Medical Research.

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MA TE RIAL ON ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

The.following bibliography is selective. It contains items received up to August 15, 1954. It omits all items dated prior to January 1, 1914. It omits many minor items. It also attempts to omit all du plicated entries (i.e., articles which have been reprinted under different titles, or in condensations). Articles which have been reprinted as pamphlets are noted; however, this is no guarantee that they are available in this form. Anyone interested in seeing the complete cross-index of material on animal experimentation may do so by calling at t,he office of the Secretary, 951 East 58th Street, Chicago. In quiries must be made in person because the "complete" bibliography exists only in the form of a card index. The Secretary's office will publis·h in each issue of the Bulletin a HAVE YOU READ? column listing items on animal experimentation appearing currently.

It is impossible, with the labor available, to note all bibliographical items. It would be appreciated if our friends would call to the attention of the Secretary's office items on animal experimentation of which they have knowledge.

"At this late day it should no longer be necessary to emphasize the enormous and rapid progress that medicine has made in the last fifty years because it has been possible to test new therapeutic measures as well as vitamins, hormones and new drugs on animals. What substitute is there for animal experimentation if medical progress is not to be retarded, even halted?

"A dog may be man's best friend in the animal world, but there is not a religion in the world, not a system of morality, not a code of medi cal ethics that does not put the most unworthy human being above any dog. The antivivisection cause would gain more adherents than it has if its champions would come forth with practical suggestions which would enable biologists and medical men to discover a cure for cancer, for paralysis in all its forms and for a hundred other baffling diseases with out experimenting on animals."
