E. J. Hammer of Miller City) Ohio, and 0. H. Hammer of Fostoria, Ohio, have perfected the Beet Harvester at a cost of several thousand dollars ex-pense in expe, rimenting. Up to a few years ago, E.

J. Hammer experimented alone with various devices

of beet topping and picking, and the first machine

was tested in the fall of 1915. Six years ago his

brother joined him in designing and building the

present type, after various points of the previous

ma-chine had been mobilized. Delay was also caused

by mechanical trouble which they had to overcome.

The machine is designed to be attached and ope-rated by a tractor with a power take-off or any make of tractor that has a wheel tread to handle row crops. Experiment has proven it is capable of har-vesting four to five acres of beets in ten hours under ordinary conditions. It tops whe,n beets are in the ground, picks them up, cleans and dumps in pits or

windrows. The topper is made up of a power, drive

guage belt which holds beet firmly in place, and tra-vels over the tops of beets and regulates the revol-ving cutting disc which cuts tops off more accurately than human hand or eye, and only the acid c:mwn of the beet is cut off, and throws the tops to one side, so

as not to interfere with the other mechanical

opera-tion.

The lifting elements consist of points similar to

those used in ordinary hand lifters. This loosens

and lifts the beet for the conveyor operation; as soon as the· beet is lifted it is immediately picked up by a pair of rotary finger wheels that work on top of

ground in conjunction, both vertical and horizontal,

according to size of beet, and the operation works

accurately and automatically, adaptable to beets of various sizes, so that none may escape the picking-up action.

The beet is held firmly in the finger wheels by a spring guard, is discharged from the finger wheels at the· appropriate time into a conveyor which cleans them as they are elevated into a hopper. The har-vester operates on but on~ row of beets at a time, and is built simple and compact. Both topping and lift-ing elements can be lowered or raised at will. It is

operated by one man on the harvester who steers

harvester by mechanical hitch on tractor draw bar to keep harvester on row. The harvester is balan-ced on two wheels, and is very easily attached to tractor. Total weight of harvester is about 2100 pounds. The beet harvester will be demonstrated

this coming season. If interested, call E. J.
