YEARBOOK ADVISOR'S MESSAGE
The theme for the 1993 Beth-El Chart is "Nursing: Yesterday, Today, Forever." The cover print depicts a nurse from yesterday in the fore-front. In the open door behind this scene is today's nurse. The door behind her is open to tomorrow's bright future of nursing. This cover photo is printed with permission of Pro-Nurse, Washington, D.C.
Beth-El yearbooks have documented our commitment and dedication to caring through-out the years. The TPR (temperature, pulse, respiration), published from 1925 to 1932, set
high standards of professionalism, literary quality and good humor. Yearbooks were not
published during the depression and the war years. Reestablished in 1958, the school had a
variety of distinctive titles for the yearbook including The Retractor and The Past Record. In 1978, the title of The Beth-El Chart was introduced. It has been my privilege to be year-book advisor since I joined Beth-El School of Nursing in I 974. The yearbook has a proud past, present, and future.
..
DEDICATION
The 1993 Beth-El Chart dedicates this yearbook to Dr. Betty
Hop-ping. She is a special nurse/educator who has dedicated herself to the welfare and education of students.
We look to Betty for her honesty, open door policy and advocacy.
Betty has contributed greatly to the progress of Beth-El College. We are very fortunate to have her here .
God went to the garden to pick out the best. He made them nurses then left the rest. God blessed their eyes to hide the tears.
Then graced their hearts to show no fears.
God only knows how we hurt inside.
As we tend the sick with humble pride.

And you know that character is built on anxiety and stress.
You are the cream of the crop,
you sure are cool,
you made it through four years of nursing school.
(or 5 or 6 ... )
Si nee all this didn't land you in the mental ward,
don't you get cocky, still got to pass the state board.
It was tough, but you can be

OUTWARD BOUND: An Alternative to Learning
Several Beth-El seniors chose the experience of Outward Bound to explore their innerselves. Through Outward Bound they learned survival techniques, skills in
building self esteem and pushing themselves to their personal limits.

The 1960 graduation uniform was d

The smock-type, blue pin stripped uni-form was worn by Beth-El students from 1989 to 1992.
Jill Clark, wearing the OR cap and uniform of the 1920's, gets help with final adjustments from Marcia Fitzgerald. Marcia is modeling the cap and traditional student uniform of the 1920's and official Glee Club uniform of
the 1930's.
Students now enjoy the freedom of choosing their own styles of a white uniform for clinicals. The only require-ment is that they properly display the Beth-El patch along with their name tag on the left upper side of the uniform.

JUNIOR YEAR ... THIS IS WHAT I FEARED The make or break year I've been waiting
for-half way there, and two more to go.
Just what I wanted, educational wealth,
Gerontology, Adult Care & Mental Health! The "golden oldies" and the "looney bin"
I think I'll just go CHECK MYSELF IN!
Oh what it is ... Pathophis ...
Sometimes I hate school, other times I think it's fine,
Oh Hope, does this mean that I'm a budding
borderline?
And Jo, I'm starting to wonder in Gerontology, why all Alzheimers patients remember more
than me.

I'm gonna lurch ... gotta take Research ... Betty, my proposal is on wiping a behind,
is it best done back to front or front to back I hope to find.
Thanks to Pathophis, I know that I am ailing, so it really doesn't matter that this course I am
failing.
I've diagnosed myself with everything, from psoria-sis to a tumor
since I only have 6 months to live I have to keep good humor.
But my confidence is building what a great nurse I'll be,
Look Kit and Linda, I can start an IV! Hey look at me . . . I can start an IV ...

SOPHOMORE YEAR ... I'M GETIIN IN GEAR
Made it through the very first year, and there's still a chance for me,
But I've gotta pass Pharmacology!
Gonna learn aU the drugs from acetominophen to zinc,
Trish, could you recommend one to stimulate my brain to think?
absorb, metabolize, distribute and excrete.
That's not aU • Health Assessment is my fate,
gotta palpate, percuss and auscultate.
Oh what a thrill ... there's more to come still.
In the spring I think I'm at the pinnacle, cause I fmaUy get to go to clinical, Get 10 give an injection, gonna do my best, Where's the greater trocanter an the iliac crest?
Sally, this is great ... forgot to aspirate!
That's not aU, I get to make the beds, insen a catheter and pass the meds.
Ellen, this one's for you:
do, do, pJease, remember, this,
or drug, dose, route, patient, time you'll miss.
One more thing, I've got the aseptic shield known all around as the sterile field. And if I break it, the burden I won't carry,
I'll just ask for a visit from the sterile fairy! Oh wholly cow, here she comes now.
This year I've gained more knowledge than I've ever had, it's a body fluid if it's wet and smells bad.
And I finally know the name for all my moping,
It's called "ineffective individual coping!"

FRESHMAN YEAR ... WHAT AM I DOING HERE?
Hey I want to be a nurse, but this can't be
A & P, stats and chemistry!
Things like Micro and Psych into my brain are pounded, Hey I'm good with people must I really be well rounded?
If that's not enough to make the year dreary,
Gotta learn to communicate and know something called a "theory".
Linda, I'm gonna show ... I can be like Flo. That's Nightingale.
What's more I can't help but moan and groan,
cause hanging over my head is that student loan!
But that's ok, my credit is good at the national bank of Marilyn Atwood!
Gonna learn the nursing process, and it's causin me strife,
for the next four years there goes my social life!
Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate.
I can be a great nurse, I just know I can if I understood that foreign language,
called a "nursing care plan."

A Good Definition of Grace
When a person works an eight-hour day and receives a fair day's pay for his time, that is a wage.
When a person competes with an opponent and receives a trophy for
his performance, that is a prize.
When a person receives appropriate recognition for his long service or high achievements, that is an award.
But when a person is not capable of earning a wage, can win no prize, and deserves no award-yet receives such a gift anyway-that is a good picture of God's unmerited favor. This is what we mean when we talk about the grace of God.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of your selves: it is the gift of God: not o works, lest any man should boas (Eph. 2:8-9).

UNQUOTE~,
Champ Camp 1992 was an experience to say the least! For the first time ever, the American Lung Association combined both the North and South Camps for Asthmatic Children. It was held at the YMCA Camp at the Rockies in Winter Park.Chris Sherrow, Christine Mondragon, and myself, Debbi Helgeson, were the ones to attend this year. We attended camp as counselors and were put in charge of 8 children each. We accompanied our charges from one group activity to the next and took care of their scrapes, bruises and homesickness.
Most of the children had medications four times a day as well as nebulizer treatments. The purpose of Champ Camp was to teach kids, 128 this year, that they can remain active and rambunctious and still be
in control of their illness. A great number of experts were present in case of emergencies. Doctors, nurses,
and respiratory therapists all volunteered their time. At least one of each accompanied each group on the day's activities.
This 7 day period gave all of us a new admiration and a greater understanding of this disease and its
affects for these children. Christine Mondragon and I have this illness and we both learned things we didn't
know.
Teamwork was an essential part of the week, without which we would have been sunk. The experience we received during the week was invaluable. It was a wonderful week full of hard work, sleepless nights, and laughter. It was well worth the added effort.
