Visit from International Accessibility Expert

At a library conference held at

Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan in June 2019, library faculty attended a presentation by Mehmet Üneş, an expert on innovative accessibility technologies for the visually impaired from Kastamonu University in Turkey. Inspired by Üneş talk, we extended an invitation for him to visit Mines to consult with us on

accessibility best practices.

During Üneş intensive week-long visit to Arthur Lakes Library in October 2019, he led multiple campus activities,

initiatives.

As a result of his visit, we identified three significant opportunities to advance library and museum accessibility:

1. Installation of an innovative indoor navigation system for the blind in the library and the museum

2. Creation of a dedicated space in the library for assistive technologies 3. Improving the accessibility of the library’s digital presence

The library and museum are currently pursuing funding opportunities to bring the above proposals to fruition, with Mr. Üneş as a project consultant. We are grateful to him for all we learned from his visit and look forward to our future collaboration.

Student Worker Highlight

Q: What attracted you to working at the Arthur Lakes Library and attending Colorado School of Mines?

A: I was initially interested in Mines because of the school’s reputation. I finally decided to attend Mines because I fell in love with the campus and Colorado. I was instantly attracted to working at Arthur Lakes Library because of my love of books. The staff is so great that I decided to stay and work all four years of my college career!

Q: What are your favorite memories or takeaways from working at the Library?

A: As a student, the library has always been there to supply the resources that I needed for my courses such as textbooks, study rooms, and the document scanner. On top of

everything else the library provides great ways for students to destress such as current popular fiction, self-care course, and travelling books. Overall, the library really cares about the students. As a work study employee, I have learned a lot about customer service and the internal workings of libraries. I have never felt more appreciated at a job than I have while working at Arthur Lakes Library. The staff are so kind and supportive!

Q: Outside interests/travels/hobbies and fun facts about you.

A: I enjoy many creative outlets such as drawing, painting, sewing, bullet journaling, and baking. I also like to stay active during the semester through hikes and walks with my dog. When I have the time I also enjoy volunteering at the Foothills Animal Shelter. Lastly, I am the Vice President of the sustainability group on campus, EarthWorks. Through

EarthWorks I learned how to garden and take care of houseplants.

Q: Any Fun Facts?

A: I played trombone for seven years before I came to Mines. I placed 2nd in the Robotics competition at the Nebraska State SkillsUSA conference. When I was young, I dreamed of being a veterinarian because of my love of animals.
