eco-driving at sea saves fuel in
the Stockholm archipelago
Waxholmsbolaget, which provides passenger and cargo transport in the Stockholm archi-pelago, installed computers on its ships to help its officers to drive in a fuel-efficient way. Fuel consumption fell by 10–15 percent with no effect on timetabling, largely thanks to the engagement of the staff on board.
Eco-driving is a concept familiar today among private motorists and professional drivers. On the other hand, it had never been tried out in shipping. Waxholms-bolaget has developed a methodology for eco-driving at sea.
As diesel engines at sea generally lack any form of cleaning, and as fuel costs are high for all shipping companies, there are both environmental and financial reasons to lower fuel consumption as far as possible. Waxholmsbolaget’s pro-ject was carried out under the climate investment programme Klimp during the period 2003–2005 and shows the importance of the ships’ officers themselves finding the best methods to save fuel.

• Energy use decreased by nearly 2,700 MWh per year, which is more than twice as much as expected. • Carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 715 tonnes per year, which is more than twice as much as expected. • Sulphur emissions decreased by nearly two tonnes per year. • Decreased fuel use as a consequence of lower engine power consumption reduces the need for repairs and maintenance.

However, the outcome at sea was less good, as the commanding officers did not think that their experience of eco-driving was put to use. The focus of the project was therefore changed, and fuel computers, which continuously display current fuel consumption, were installed on four ships. The officers consequently had to develop the most fuel-efficient driving style themselves and became highly engaged in the project.
The results so far have been above expectations. There has been a substan-tial decrease in fuel consumption, not just in the four project ships but virtually throughout the fleet. Both contractors and partners with their own ships have changed their styles of driving and shown an interest in fuel computers.

All modes of transport with conventional engines and fuels contribute to an impact on the climate. Reducing fuel consumption is an important measure, including for shipping.
The company has installed fuel computers in a further eight high-speed ships and has set a requirement for fuel computers to be installed whenever new engines are fitted. The fact that other players in the shipping industry have paid attention to the project and launched similar work on change is indicative of the opportunities for wider dissemination.

The project has shown that a simple investment in a fuel computer of around SeK 120,000 can result in a decrease in fuel consumption of 10–15 percent. reduced fuel consumption also means lower emissions and considerably lower repair costs.
The project has shown that targets and methods must be credible if they are to motivate. The installa-tion of fuel computers is one aspect of showing the shipping company’s ambiinstalla-tions with the project. The computers have been a valuable tool in both practical and educational terms and will be installed on almost all the ships.
