R. L. Parshall,

Dear ]!r. Parshall:

BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS

June

23, 1925.

A request has come from \ ashington to revise Farmers'

P. 0. BOX 180

POST OFFICE BUILDING BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA

Bulletin No. 882 on " Irrigation of Orchards". It is so long since this report was first prepared that it needs to be not only revised but rewritten. I am sending out a number of SOS calls to our field men to forward to me during the next month or so some notes on several of the main topics of this report.

Your familiarity with the orchard sections of Colorado and your accessibility to the horticulturists of the Colorado Experiment Station may enable you to ootain the best practice in orchard irrigation in tbe state.

Under the heading of water supply I would like to

secure reports from siz to twelve typical orchards in different

(/)

parts of the west. In each case a brief description of the canal system from Thich water is obtained would be given as well

as the secondary features of water delivery, length of irriga-tion season, and so on.· I &n, however, particularly desirous of getting the cost to the orchardist of the water for a period of say ten years. This would not include the cost of irrigating.

UNITED STATES bEPA~iMENT OF AGRICULTURE

DIVISION OF AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING

BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS

July 21, 1925.

Mr.

R. L.

Parshall,

Colorado Experiment Station, Fort Oollins, Colorado. Dear Mr. Parshall:

P. 0. BOX 180

POST OFFICE BUILDING BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA

I was glad to get your letter of July 13 and also copies of bulletins relating to horticulture of 'the Colorado Experiment Station.

I am enclosing a brief outline of Orchard Irrigation for the revision of my bulletin of that title. You w·ill note sub-titles on inter-cropping, cover crops, and relation of irrigation to winter killing. ~hese are topics on which you might be able to secure some

information from Professor Sandsten and others connected with the station.

In Bulletin 235 on "Reclaiming !titre Soil in Grand Valley", there is a statement concerning the value of cover crops in checking nitre damages. Do you happen to lmow if any more recent inf"ornntion is to be had on this subject or if this practice has been confirmed during the seven years since this bulletin was written.

I shall be able to make some use of what is said on cover crops in Bulletin 250 on Orchard lanagement, and ula like it if yoq could get a few good pictures showing cover crops in orchards.

very good one appears on page 14 of Bulletin 250. Another appears on page 12 of Bulletin 223.

I would also like to have a good print of the view shown on page 11 of Bulletin 223.

ith kind regards, I remain

Very truly yours,

~
