BETH-EL COLLEGE OF

NURSING

THE CHART

REMEMBERING THE STUDENT NURSE by

Roberta Mayer Skar

I live with fear, ... pressure and demands. There aren't enough hours in the day for me! I am tom between two worlds, each important in their own way. One ... more than another ... constantly rebuked by the other. I am "Student", I am "Mother", torn between two identities ... tom between two obligations ... ! A product of multiple personalities, each crying out for their "Domain"!

How does a student shuffle her hours between family and school? Does she ignore one to feed the other? Is she counted as neglectful to one if she nurtures the other? Has her life become an accounting of grades and "good" marks? Is that what makes her who "she" is?

To even begin the quest of nursing school, this student is to be admired! Especially if she has a family, children, husband, and job. But, more so, in my opinion, if she is a single parent. Trying to better herself for her children's lives.

Especially her/ for she is tom between what society deter-mines fit or unfit. What others judge as caring or uncaring. She is the living proof of the demands "forgetful" instructors place on the student. "Her" shoulders carry a multitude of weight. But, ... she continues, in spite of the judgments, ... in spite of the callousness of some. She will conquer! Somehow she can be: Mother, Father, Student, Daughter, Friend, Caretaker, Chauffeur, Mediator, Therapist, Companion, Mentor, Spiri-tual Role Model, Cousin, Sister, Employee ... somehow ... she will handle all these! You ask "HOW"? Because she is I I strong ... some on I I d 't kn ow t h a , t . . . b ut s h e 1s . ,, s tr onger ,, than "most"! Her drive will uphold her. Her children's needs will sustain her. Somehow, . . . God will guide her through the valleys and hills. She might stumble ... she might fall into the pit at times ... but, with loving arms stretched out toward her, she will be revived! If the instructors understand and guide and nurture her .. . she will succeed. She will grow ... she will become an asset and a pleasant reminder of what "Nursing" is all about. Through her struggles .. . through her innocence, the "true" Nurse is formed! "Hopefully one adorned with compassion, love, empathy, trust and confi-dence."

YEARBOOK

ADVISOR'S MESSAG

E

CELEBRATING NINETY YEARS OF EXCELLENCE at Beth-El College of Nursing is the theme for this year's Chart. The cover of the yearbook is a picture that hangs in the Beth-El parlor library. The unknmvn

artist illustrates a moment when instructor and student contemplated the history of nursing.

Beth-El College has its own rich history. The school was originally established as a diploma program in

1904 as the Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital Training School, and became Beth-El Hospital

School of Nursing in 1911. In 1985, the school became a Baccalaureate Nursing School. The Masters of

Nursing Program was added in the Spring of 1993.

In the painting, Florence Nightingale is revered by both student and teacher. She paved the way for

recognition of the nursing profession as both art and science. Each class of Beth-El graduates receives the

Nightingale flame of commitment to excellence in caring, knowledge, and skill.

-DEDICATION

The many faces of Marilyn Atwood

The 1994 Beth-El Chart is dedicated to Marilyn Atwood. Marilyn began working at Beth-El College in August

of 1973 as a secretary for the school. In 1980, she became Director of Student Services after receiving her masters' degree, and has tirelessly devoted herself to meeting the needs of nursing students ever since. It is with love, respect, and gratitude for her twenty-one years of service that the yearbook is dedicated to this very special

person.

Marilyn is said to be a very private person, although her office door is always open. She has been married to

Charles Atwood for thirty-five years, and has three children. Her hobbies include: reading, fishing with her husband, and dancing. She also loves juicy hamburgers, good Mexican food, and chocolate!

Marilyn is always positive, and forever willing to help any student with any need. Her patience and support

are her hallmarks. The faculty and staff say that she "has large shoulders to carry us all", and is the best friend you could ever ask for. The students agree! Without her many of us students would never have made it through

IN QUEST TO BE THE BES

T

1994 Senior Class Pin Designed by Teri Williams

Teri Williams found out about a summe:

extemship at Swedish Medical Center by

at-tending the Spring CSNA convention and

talk-ing to the nurse recruiter. "I wrote a Jette:

explaining why I wanted to be an O.R. num

and received a position in the O.R. for thi

summer." Teri spent 40 hours a week for thret

months with a preceptor and was taught

in-struments, laparascopic equipment, and diffe, -ent surgical techniques. "By the end of th(

summer I was amazed at what I learned and;

was circulating and 'scrubbing-in' for genera

surgery cases. On top of all the experience I

even got paid!"

Teri urges everyone to become involved and

attend the nursing conventions. The conven

-tions allow you to network and meet

prospec-tive employers. By becoming involved you

increase your chances of landing a job aftei

graduation.

The results of test scores can be shocking.

Being A Nurse Means ...

You will never be bored.

You will always be frustrated. You will be surrounded by

challenges.

So much to do and so little time. You will carry immense responsibility

and very little authority.

You will step into people's lives and you will make a difference.

Some will bless you. Some will curse you.

You will see people at their worst

-and at their best.

You will never cease to be amazed at people's

capacity for love,

courage, and endurance.

You will see life begin - and end.

You will experience resounding triumphs and

devastating failures. You will cry a lot.

You will laugh a lot.

!'

You will know what it is to be

16 human and to be humane.

TEN RULES TO REMEMBER

1. Excellence in nursing is achievable.

Perfec-tion is not. Know the difference.

2. The call bell is of no use if it is on the floor.

3. As soon as you are gloved and gowned the

itching will begin. ' 4. A bed bath may be just a nursing task to

you, but to your patients it is a highly

personal and intimate experience.

S. If a man pulls out a foley catheter with a

5 cc balloon, he may just be frustrated and

upset. If he pulls out a foley with a 30 cc

balloon, do a mental status evaluation.

6. Do not try to move patients who weigh

rr:1ore t~an 300 pounds by yourself,

espe-cially 1f they are wedged in the shower

stall.

7. A loud voice will not penetrate:

total nerve deafness; mental confusion or

unconsciousness '

Nor wil_l it translate English into Spanish

8. The maJor concern of the nurse is to knm•,

the person with the disease as a person.

9. A watched IV bag never runs out.

10. NEVER, NEVER connect the nasogastric

tube to the tubing from the foley catheter.

Applying Biblical precepts to nursing theory and practice while lifting up the name of Jesus

This year Beth-El College was recognized as a charter member of National Nurses Christian Fellowship which is also a part of NCF, International. This linked us through prayer and newsletters to Christian nurses around the world.

Faculty and students met to-gether weekly for Bible study, prayer, worship, song and en-couragement in the Christian walk. Using material and video taped lessons from NCF we studied Nursing Ethics: God's Standards.

We were encouraged by a visit

in the Fall with Mary Thompson, Director of NCF

-USA. She is spearheading the North American Conference

"Jesus Christ: The Hope of

Nursing" to be held June 25-29,

1994, at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.

Our purpose is to know Jesus Christ in Nursing. We strive towards excellence in our per-sonal lives as well as in our role

as nurses. Promoting the good

news of the gospel, we desire

that others might also ex peri-ence the forgiveness of sin and

eternal life Jesus offers to those

who believe.

TO STAY ON COURSE, TRUST THE UNFAIUNG

the best job on earth. Sometimes, it will seem like the worst. But

in a world that is full of empty talk about caring for and about

your fellow man, you will always know that you are doing

something about it every day of your life.
