KEYDETS AT A GLANCE

Keydets Back on the Road, Taking on Radford and High Point VMI Holds 2-0 Record on Road in Big South Action

VMI basketball hits the road Thursday, venturing to Radford and High Point for a two-game road trip. The contest with the Highlanders begin Thursday night at 7 p.m., while the High Point game is set for a 7 p.m. tip on Saturday.

VMI comes off an 0-2 homestand, having fallen to Coastal Carolina (109-87) and Charleston Southern (88-80). Both teams outrebounded VMI by wide margins (52-33 and 56-33) respectively, while Big South-leading Coastal Carolina shot well over 50% from the field in their victory.

On a positive note, Ron Burks returned to the VMI lineup during the two-game stretch, starting the Jan. 6 game versus Coastal. Burks had missed the past seven games after breaking his hand during the November 29 game against Central Penn. The junior averaged 9.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in games last week against Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern, and five of his six field goals made during the week were from 3-point range.

Rodney Glasgow also made his return to the VMI lineup, albeit coming off a considerably shorter layoff. After being named the Big South Freshman of the Week Monday, Glasgow was sidelined for Thursday’s game with Coastal Carolina due to the chicken pox. He returned for Saturday’s contest, however, and came off the bench to score 10 points in the Keydet setback.

VMI is bidding to lead the nation in scoring for the fifth straight year, and currently paces Division I at 91.7 points per game. VMI is the only team to accomplish the feat over four consecutive seasons, and this year, the Keydets also lead the country in three-point field goals per game, averaging 10.6 made per contest.

LLaasstt MMeeeettiinngg wwiitthh RRaaddffoorrdd ((22//22//1100))::

 Big South Player of the Year Art Parakhouski had 30 points and tied a Cameron Hall record with 22 rebounds, Lazar Trifunovic had 27 points and grabbed 12 boards and the Radford Highlanders routed VMI 111-84 on Feb. 2, 2010. It was the Highlanders’ fourth straight win over VMI, a run that dates back to 1/21/2009, when the Keydets won 87-72 at the Dedmon Center.

LLaasstt MMeeeettiinngg wwiitthh HHiigghh PPooiinntt ((22//1166//1100))::

 Austin Kenon had a career-high 38 points, including a 14 of 15 performance from the foul line, sparking VMI to a 91-84 win over the High Point Panthers in the Keydets’ home finale for the 2009-10 season.

While the traditional saying is “Home Sweet Home”, this season, the road has been kinder to the Keydets during Big South play. The key stat of rebound- ing is one drastic difference, as VMI has been outre- bounded by 14.7 boards per contest at home, but on the road, VMI holds a 6.5 per game edge in rebounding margin. The Keydet field goal percentage is 51.2% away from Cameron Hall in Big South play, while at home, VMI has been held to a 39.8% from the floor.

RReebboouunnddiinngg == W Wiinnnniinngg??::

VMI has shown drastic improvement in rebounding this season, including opening the year by outrebounding three consecutive opponents for the first time in the Duggar Baucom era. The Keydets are currently at a -2.4 rebound margin for the season but are a startling 7-0 when they hold the edge on the glass.

The Keydet rebounding efforts have been led by Stan Okoye, who has averaged 9.0 rebounds per con- test, the third-highest mark in the Big South. Nick Gore is also averaging around five rebounds per contest.

O

Otthheerr SSttaattiissttiiccaall N Nootteess::

This year’s VMI team has several clear-cut statistical differences. As noted on page 4, the Keydets are 8-0 when outshooting their opponent this season, but have just one win when they do not hold an edge from the

floor. Also, the team is 9-1 when leading at the five- minute mark, 8-1 when holding the edge at halftime and is undefeated (7-0) when scoring at least 90 points. The Keydets are also 6-0 when holding their opponents to 80 points or less.

O

Okkooyyee LLeeaaddss tthhee LLeeaagguuee::

Stan Okoye continues to impress in his sophomore season, as he has led the Big South in scoring for the much of the season. Okoye is currently averaging 19.6 points per game, and he also ranks third in rebounding at 9.0 per contest.

BBaauuccoom m M Moovveess U Upp::

Despite only being at the Institute for five seasons, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom continues to move up the school’s all-time wins list, and could advance even further this weekend. VMI’s Jan. 2 win over Gardner- Webb was Baucom’s 78th victory at VMI, and after pass- ing Charlie Schmaus on Dec. 11, Baucom now trails just Bart Bellairs’ 116 wins and Joe Cantafio’s 79 victories.

D

Drriivvee FFoorr FFiivvee::

Last season, the Keydets led Division I in scoring (88.6 ppg) for the fourth consecutive season, becoming the first team in history to do so. VMI paced the nation relatively easily, scoring 5.5 more points per contest than the category’s runner-up, BYU, and did so despite their lowest output per game in the Baucom era. This year, the

(3)

Keydets are bidding for a fifth straight scoring crown, and they lead in this week’s (Jan. 9) sta- tistical update with 91.7 PPG. VMI is also pac- ing the nation in three-pointers per game, aver- aging 10.6 per contest.

O

Otthheerr N Naattiioonnaall N Nootteess::

In addition to three-pointers and overall scoring, stats the Keydets have dominated nationally over the past several seasons, VMI is also near the top in other categories as well.

The team ranks fourth in steals, averaging 10.3 per contest, and is 24th in turnover margin, holding a +4.1 mark.

O

Onn tthhee RRooaadd::

After opening the season with eight home games in the first month, the Keydets now have just five games left at Cameron Hall. VMI will not play at home again until Thursday, Jan.27,

when the Keydets take on Gardner-Webb.

K

Keennoonn M Moovviinngg U Upp::

Despite struggling on the last homestand, VMI’s Austin Kenon is on the verge of becom- ing the Keydets’ all-time leading three-point shooter. Chavis Holmes, who graduated in 2009, currently holds the record with 306 treys made (as well as 795 attempted). Kenon is 14 off that mark, and just nine off the numbers of three’s Holmes tried in his career.

SSccoouuttiinngg RRaaddffoorrdd::

Radford will come into Thursday at per- haps its highest point of the season. While the Highlanders have struggled this season after losing Art Parakhouski to graduation, the team did capture its first win against a D-I opponent Saturday, defeating High Point 64-59 at the Dedmon Center.

SSccoouuttiinngg H Hiigghh PPooiinntt::

The Panthers enter this weekend’s pro- ceedings slumping. They will play Liberty on Thursday night, seeking their first win since Dec. 8 and trying to break a six-game losing streak.

O

Onn TThhee H Hoorriizzoonn::

On the horizon for the Keydets is a trip to Liberty on Thursday, Jan. 20. The Vines Center was not kind to VMI last season, as Liberty cap- tured a 91-73 win and held a 53-25 edge on the glass. The previous year, however, the Keydets handed the Flames their worst loss at home since 1991, winning 109-72. That marked VMI’s largest margin of victory in a road win in over 50 years.

VMI will have a quartet of TV games this season. That will include both VMI/Liberty games, which will be shown on the Flames Television Network. The VMI/West Virginia game (11/27) was shown on MASN, which will also televise the Feb. 26 game with Winthrop.

The Keydets have amassed an impressive total of blocked shots already this season, and may assail last year’s program record perform- ance.

All told this season, VMI has posted 77 blocks coming into this two-game road trip, 13 of them against Southern Virginia on Nov. 23.

That puts the Keydets well on the way to the program’s #5 performance, a 105-block effort in 2008-09, and could give them a chance to better their 144-block performance from last season.

O

VMI will be looking to continue an odd trend, quite literally, in 2010-11. Each of the last two seasons ending in odd years, 2006-07 and 2008-09, have seen VMI advance to the title game of the Big South Championship.

Meanwhile, the even numbered years have concluded with first round losses.

After VMI's Keith Gabriel sent the game to overtime with two late free throws, the Winthrop Eagles scored the first six points of the extra frame and went on to defeat the VMI Keydets 88-82 in the Big South opener for both teams Thursday night, Dec. 2 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

With Winthrop up by one with 33 sec- onds to go, WU's Reggie Middleton hit a pair of free throws to put the visitors up three, 73- 70. Austin Kenon converted a lay-up at the other end, and after Middleton split a pair of tries for the Eagles, Gabriel was fouled going to the basket. With 4.8 seconds showing on the clock, Gabriel drilled the two foul shots to tie the contest.

Middleton had a desperation try for the Eagles at the buzzer, but it hit the backboard, the left inside portion of the rim and then bounced out to send the contest to extra time. It was the first overtime game at Cameron Hall since Feb. 2, 2009.

In the five minute overtime frame, Winthrop (4-3, 1-0) scored the first six points to take an 80-74 advantage. Rodney Glasgow hit a three-pointer for VMI to cut it to three, and VMI got back within two when Michael Sparks split a pair from the charity stripe with 1:52 left. The Keydets got a steal on the follow- ing possession, but turned the ball over and would not be able to cut it to a one possession game again.

Seven different Keydet players had at least 16 points, VMI notched the second-most points in school history and the Keydets routed the Central Penn College Knights 151-92 Monday night, Nov. 27 at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

The 151-point output was just five points shy of the largest scoring efforts in program history, a pair of 156-point efforts in 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. It was the team's largest margin of victory and most points scored overall since Nov. 20, 2008, when the Keydets bested Stevenson by 61 markers.

It was also the first time VMI had seven players in double figure scoring since that con- test with Stevenson. The home team was helped by 21 three-pointers, the first game VMI had with 20-plus treys since January of 2009, and an effort that tied the 14th-most three-pointers made in NCAA Division I history. VMI's 5-0 start is the program's best in the modern era, as the Keydets had not accom- plished that feat since the 1921-22 season.

Covington's nine blocks tied Eric Mann's nine rejections against The Citadel on Jan. 15, 2000. Covington also had nine points and nine rebounds, missing a triple-double by just one of each statistic.

Gabriel started the contest 0 for 5, but finally hit the needed three-pointer at the 8:47 mark, becoming the 34th player in Keydet his- tory, and second active VMI player, to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.

"We are so excited to have Quinton Upshur and Brian Brown and their families join our VMI Basketball program, "said Baucom. "Both men bring a high level of character to our basketball family and will do very well in the classroom, in the Corps and on the basketball court. My staff has done an exceptional job again bringing in quality cadet-athletes to the Institute."

Brown, a 5'11, 180 combo guard, averaged 19.7 points per game as a junior with 6.1 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. He shot 53 percent from the field in 2009-10, including 36 percent from 3-point range.

"Brian can really score, "said Baucom. "He is a very good three-point shooter but has the explosiveness to get in the lane and finish at the rim.

Brian's versatility allows him to play both the point and off the ball as a shoot- ing guard."

Upshur is a 6-5, 190 forward who plays the wing position and aver- aged 14.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists as a junior. He is also a standout on the Booker T. Washington volleyball team.

“Q is very long and is a great athlete," says Baucom. "He will be very disruptive in our full court pressure defense but can also score in a variety of ways. He is an excellent rebounder from the wing position."
