Thesis - Development and evaluation of Multi-RAT simulator-00072198

Description

Today operators are owning and operating several Radio Access Technologies (RATs), for example, GSM, WCDMA (3G), LTE (4G), and WiFi. In order to meet the increasing traffic, operators have started to deploy LTE as well as WiFi in order to enhance user throughput and reduce transmission delay. The inter-working between LTE and WiFi is very important in order to provide seamless coverage, achieve high capacity, and enhance the end-user experience. In order to understand performance of such mixed LTE and WiFi networks, there is a need of modeling WiFi networks and developing a simulator capable of modeling both these RATs. The goal of this thesis work is to develop a simulator capable of modeling time-dynamic aspects in a mixed LTE-WiFi network and we are seeking two students to work on this project.

This work is carried out in Ericsson Research, which provides Ericsson with system concepts, technology and methodology, to secure long term competitive products. We drive world-class innovation through cooperation within Ericsson and with partners, customers, universities and research institutes.

Objective

The objective of this thesis is to extend a current Matlab-based time-dynamic LTE simulator to include capabilities to simulate WiFi nodes. This involves a mix of theoretical work along with implementation and verification:

Study WiFi access and networking principles, and inter-working mechanisms between WiFi and LTE Modeling of mixed WiFi and LTE networks at sufficiently accurate level, including theoretical analysis Implementation and verification of the models including benchmarking

Qualifications

This project aims at Master of Science (civilingenjör) students in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering. Matlab is our primary tool for modeling and simulation work, and Matlab and programming skills is a must. Background in computer networking and/or telecommunication is preferred. Applicants with less than 4.0 in average grade will not be considered.
