Description

Mobile broadband for cellular networks are continuously being evolved to meet the future demands for higher data rates, improved coverage and capacity. The enormous success of Smart Phones boosts mobile broadband date requirements. 4G, or Long Term Evolution (LTE) is commercial since three year back, and is being evolved by Ericsson and others in 3GPP. LTE brings radio features such as advanced uplink and downlink multi antenna solutions (MIMO) and larger bandwidths from aggregating multiple carriers. These and other features will bring peak rates of 1 GB/s, but also improves other characteristics such as coverage, delay and flexibility.

Another trend in cellular networks, is that small power base stations are becoming more common. This is again due do capacity requirements. By deploying micro and pico base stations in areas with high user densities, so- called hot spots, one can off-load the macro base stations and provide very large total capacity. This is called heterogeneous networks (HetNet) and is an important scenario for 4G networks. In HetNet the need for cell coordinated radio resources management (RRM) is further accentuated, while the small cells are fully covered (and interfered) by the over-laying macro cells.

LTE is being specified by vendors are operators by 3GPP. Rel 12 work of LTE has just started up and is being defined by Ericsson and others. Candidate features for rel 12 are a more energy efficient carrier type, small cell (i.e. HetNet) enhancements, terminal-to-terminal direct communication and improved coverage for machine-to- machine communication, etc.

The master thesis will be on one of the candidate features for LTE rel 12, with the purpose to give input for 3GPP standardization. The exact scope of the thesis work will be settled later, together with the student.

Qualifications

Master Thesis Student within Communications or Signal Processing with at least 4 in average grades (or equivalent). Grades from relevant university education should be included in the application.
