Experiences in quality of life by users of cochlear implants and their relatives’ experiences – two to three years after surgery.

Abstract

The objective of our study was to map out the experiences among of quality of life in people who went through a cochlear implantation and their relatives’ experiences. In this study we also looked for answers about whether there is a connection between level of speech

perception and level of satisfaction with the implant. This study was based on questionnaire answers from 28 individuals who received cochlear implants two to three years ago and answers from their respective relatives. The respondents where extracted among patients who were operated during the years 2002 and 2003 at the CI-department at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge/Stockholm. The age-span for the participants was 18-65 years and the average age was 53,6 years. In this study we have used qualitative as well quantitative methods. We used a questionnaire developed by professor Björn Lyxell; the questionnaire was later revised in order to achieve the goals for this study. The results from this study show that a majority of respondents and their relatives experienced positive changes with implants.

Speech-perception, communication and quality of life aspects such as a higher degree of independence are the most pronounced changes. A certain correlation could be observed between the level of speech perception and level of satisfaction with the implant.
