UNITED STATES

DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR

GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

Fort Morgan, Colorado Dec. 31, 1950

Mr. W.E. Code

Irrigation Engineer

Colorado Experiment Station Colorado A 8: M College Fort Collins, Colorado

Dear Bill,

Thank you for your prompt response to my request for your recorder data on the well in the Fort Morgan city hall basement. I will get the remainder of the record Tuesday and send it to you. I should like to have the transcribed data from that also it you will be so kind as to send it to me.

Now, while I am asking for things,' may as well beg for something else. I should like to have the 1950 data from your recorder at Prospect Valley (B1-63-2cc). This and the Ft Morgan data will complete my tabulation of all the Water-level measurements taken in this pert of Colorado since you started to take them. It consists of 71 pages of well packed data.

In answer to your rec;uest for the April and November readings at your former observction wells in this area I am sending you, attached here-with, a copy of the data I am submitting to Stan Lohman for the 1950 Colorado water-level report. You should be able to make an interesting statement to the press as the drop in the water table during t,ly3 last year was

considerable in places. I believe I shall also norkm prepare some kind of

statepemt a little later on when I am writing on that part of the study in the South Platte report.

It is too late to wish you a Merry Christmas but I can wish you a happy and healthy 1951 starting with the New Year and you will get it only a day late. CC/ S. W. Lohman Geo. H. Taylor Sincerely yours L. J. Bjbrklund Hydr. Engr. GW

U. S. Geological Survey Ground Water Division Denver Federal Center Denver, Colorado

Dear Stan:

I have taken the trouble this time to check over in detail your 1950 observation well measurements. I have

discovered

a

:umber of errors and this has lead me to

chock back into previous records and i find that there ,

are some errors in the 1949 report. I will refer to them as I take up the diZferent items. 1 will use the designa. tions MP and GS meaning measuring point and ground surface in order to avoid length of this letter.

The first item is in Adams County: C-1-62-22dac, Charles B. Nordloh, The EP is 0.8 below GS; therefore, the figure should be 44,79 instead of 43.19.

There are four items from Otero County: C-22-58-21bd,

C. Meyer. In 1948 there was a well (fAange and the new

MP was reported 1.9 against the older ;ne Which was 1.2. The figure Should be 32.30 instead of 33.00. The 1949

record is OK. For well C-22-59-24bc the MP ii• '1.0. The

figure should be 21,32 instead or .0.32. The 190 record

should be: April

5,

22.05; November 29, 19.60. Previous

recdrds are OK. Well C.23.57.3bc„ H. L. Gerber Should be labeled abandoned because of inaccessibiliy. For well C.23-57.32-bdb, the name is J. C. Vroman. It is given as Vorman in both the 1949 and 1950 reports.

The following items are in Weld County: B-2-64.30.cbc, F. Schroeder. The MP is +1.8. The record should read as follows: 1950, April 12, 12,59.1.80210.79; November 28*

1:,.18.1,8w11.38. 1943* April 21, 12.$2-1.0m10.72; November 9, 12.48.1,8=10.68. Previous rccords are OK. B.4.64..10002,

Alice St, John. The new MP is top of pump base 1.20 above

old MP which was at 4.0.5. Thus,

now

MP is at +1.70 above GS.

In 1949 in the new schedule submitted it must have been shown that the new MP was 1.14 above old MP. At least in

(34)

S. W. Lohman 2 June 21, 1951

1949 you wero using 1,64. Now in 1950* +0.5 was being used. The correct measurement should be April 121

9,58.,.1.64$074,94; November 28* 9.92-1.4,18.28, Well

B4-64-1200* H. Duell. The correct measurement for November 28 is 15.59-1.5a14.09'instead of 19.04. Well B..6-64..30bba* M. 0. Patton* should be labeled abandoned. Well 130.7..65-18cdb* Harry Clark. The figures shown are for the MP at GS* whereas they should be calculated from

a MP at +0.5. The correct figures are 27.32 and 32.35. In the 1949 report there is a statement that no measure-ments were taken. They are: April 22* 27.20..0.5=26.70;

/6 November ey 29.00-0.5w28.50. Well 13-7.66-14aba* change

A. A. Larson to Fred Hoffner. Well B-7.66.25bec delete the final e in Clarke.

I hope these errors occuring in the 1949 report will not add to the already complicated situation, If you do not think it worthwhile possibly you will want to let it stand as is. I take it that the 1950 report has not yet been submitted to Washington.

Sincerely yours,

W. E. Code

Dear Yr. Code:

October 3, 1_946

T am enclosing a copy of our 1945 Y;a_ter Level Report for your re— view and approval. You will note that a slight additional change has been made in the numbering system, principally by the addition of the letters "B" or "C" to designate the quadrant subdivided by the principal

meridian and base line as described on pages 2 and

3.

If you find any errors in the text or tables it will be appreciated if you can let us know as soon as practicable so that these changes can be forwarded to our —ashington office for addition to the original copy. This would include any additional information you might have for any of the wells, such as depths or diameters where missing.

I wish to thank you again for your splendid cooperation in working up these data for us and hope the finished product proves to your liking.

-ith best personal regards, I am

Cordially yours S. W. Lohman District Geologist SWL/ils Encl.

Lohman, W. E. Code, and W. R. Smith PROGRAM OF WORK

The observation-well program in Colorado, begun in 1942 by the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, was continued in 1945. In

July

1945

a program of cooperative ground-water investigations in Colorado was

begun by the Geological Survey and the Colored° Water Conservation Board. Detailed gromdmiwater studies were begun during the year in the Big Sandy Creek area in parts of 71bert, El Paso, and Lincoln Counties; in cooperation also with the Bureau of Reclamation, in the sump area of the San Luis Valley in Alamosa County; and in the

Grand Junction area in Nesa County.

During 1945 a report on the ground-water supply of Prospect Valley, Colorado was published.

At the close of 1944 observations were being made by the Geological Survey in only

4

wells, pnd water-level measurements were continued in these

4

wells

in 1945. Well U.S. 80, in Pueblo County, was observed monthly by the own3r, C. M. Ellariorth. Wells U.S.

79

in Garfield County, U.S. 79a in Pitkin County, and U.S. 81 in Arapahoe County were observed monthly by engineers of the Denver office of the Division of

Airface -Tater of the Water Resources Branch of the Geological Survey, through the courtesy of Robert Follansbee, district en7ineer.

Since 1929, W. E. Code, Irritation Bagineer, Colorado Arricultural S'xperiment Station, Colorado A. and Y. College has been measuring twice yearly the water levels in a large nuaber of irrigation wells in Colorado. At the sugestion of the writer Yr. Code kindly agreed to supply for publication in this report the descriptions and water-level measurements of these wells. From these data the descriptions and water levels for 190 wells were selected and are given below. Twice-yearly measure-ments, in the sprinr before most pumping begins and in the fall after most pumping ceases, were made in 117 of the 190 wells) the oth-e.

3

wells were equipped with auto-matic water-stage recorder*. Thus at the close of 1945 observations were being made in 194 wells. During the year 1,053 wetted-tape measurements were made, but, includ-ing earlier years, a total of 6,923 wetted-tape measurements are given below.

The task of preparing the well descriptions and water-level measurements for publication was performed by W. R. Smith. The manuscript was typed and Checked by Ida Louise Schooler.

WELL NUMB7RING SYSTEM

The observation wells have been assigned nuMbers which serve also to locate them. Colorado is subdivided under three Principal Meridian end Base Line Systems: (1) The Sixth Principal Veridian; (2) the Yew Mexico Principal Yeridian; and (3) the

Ute Principal !!_eridian. All of the wells described lie in the northwest (B) or

southwest (C) quadrants of the area subdivided by the Sixth Principal Meridian, whose

ealtvtel-4

quadrants hrve been assigned the letters A to D lettered in an anticlockwise di-rection from the northeast (A) quadrant through the southeast (D) quadrant. he letter forming the first segment of the number indicates the quadrant, the second the township, the third the range, and the fourth the section. The letters that make up the last segment indicate the 1.3sition of the well in the section, the first letter indicating the quarter section, the second the 40-acre tract within the quarter sec-tion, and the third the la-acre tract within the 40-acre tract. The quarters, 40-acre

eo teite.

(38)

3

A digit at the and of a number indicates a particular well of two or more in the same 10-acre tract.

The original U. S. numbers are given also for the

4

wells measured .17 the

Geological Survey since 1942.
