KM 203 — Church History II: Reformation to the Present 3.0 Credit Hours
Spring 2021

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
A survey of the Christian Church from the Reformation to the present with special reference to key figures, events, themes, and developments.
Prerequisites: KM 202 (or consent of chair).
II. COURSE GOALS
The purpose of this course is to enable the student to do the following:
A. Comprehend the basic historical framework, theological trends, and major personages of the church during and since the Reformation.
B. Study clearly the causes, divisions, ramifications, and heritage of the Reformation.
C. Develop a historical-theological synthesis of the major movements since the Reformation.
D. Gain an understanding of the particular historical-theological heritage of which the student is a part.
E. Form an understanding of a broad range of events, issues and ideas integral for a reflective study of Christian history and thereby enable the student to
intelligently “dig deeper” after the close of the semester.
F. Acquire critical-thinking skills useful for future academic and vocational pursuits.

III. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS COURSE
As a result of successfully completing this course, the student will be able to do the following:
A. Identify the major theological issues raised by Reformation theologians in relation to the teachings of the Medieval Church.
B. Articulate the significance of key themes in the Protestant, Catholic, and Radical Reformations.
C. Critically explain the fundamental theological concerns of the Enlightenment era.
D. Discuss the central features of Western theology during the nineteenth century.
E. Articulate the major emphases of Christian theology in the twentieth century.
Innehåll
A. Kyrkohistorisk översikt från reformationen fram till idag
Här ges en översikt över den kristna kyrkans historia, från reformationsperioden under 1500- talet och dess förutsättningar fram till den moderna tidens väckelse- och kyrkoförnyande rörelser. I samtliga tidsperioder beaktas kyrkans påverkan på det omgivande samhället liksom kyrkans förmåga att assimilera respektive avvisa olika företeelser i samtiden.
B. Missionshistorisk översikt från 1500-talet fram till idag
Här ges en översikt över missionshistorien där såväl teologiska som kyrkliga, politiska, socioekonomiska och kulturella aspekter beaktas. Särskilt lyfts den växelverkan fram som skett mellan den institutionella kyrkan och olika typer av förnyelse- och väckelserörelser i spridandet av den kristna tron och kyrkan till nya kulturer.
C. Metodfrågor
Teoretiska och metodologiska frågor med relevans för kyrko- och missionsstudier introduceras genom ett observerande fältstudium med efterföljande seminarieövning.
Undervisning och examination Undervisningen ges genom
• föreläsningar över delar av kurslitteraturen,

• seminarium som behandlar metodologiska frågor,
• muntlig redovisning av fältstudium i smågrupper.
Examinationen sker genom
• hemskrivningar (30p + 60p) och PM-skrivande (30p)
Betygsättning
• A = 90%, B = 80%, C = 70%, D = 60%, F = 0–59%
