En alltmer växande del av Afrikas befolkning arbetar inte längre med jordbruk, både som ett resultat av migration och av en växande icke-agrar sektor i rurala områden. I boken Farewell to farms: De-agrarianisation and employment in
Africa, redigerad av Bryceson och Jamal (1997), diskuteras vilken effekt denna
process har på välfärd, näringslivets roll och nationell utveckling. Geografiska texter kring industrialisering i Afrika är förvånansvärt sällsynta. Ett arbete som kan nämnas är dock Industrializing Africa: Development options and
challen-ges for the 21st century av Makonnen Alemayehu (2000). Ett annat i huvudsak
ekonomiskt arbete är Framework for industrialization in Africa av Thomas A. Taku (1999). En spännande bok som behandlar kopplingarna mellan industri-alisering, importsubstitution, agribusiness och olika maktstrukturer i Nigeria är
The wheat trap av Andræ & Beckman (1985).
Turism är ett område som intresserar många geografer, och ett stort antal ar-beten har getts ut om många aspekter på denna snabbt växande näringsgren. Studier om turism i Afrika är dock sällsynta. En text som kan nämnas här är
Tourism and development in Africa av Gamble (1992). Ett exempel på en
fall-studie inom ämnesområdet är Akyeampongs (1996) Tourism and regional

I Norden har utvecklingsgeografi som ett speciellt forskningsområde diskuterats framför allt i Norge och Finland. Hesselberg (1985) anknyter till den diskussio-nen i sin bok The Third World in transition: The case of peasantry in Botswana. Hesselberg ägnar mycken möda åt att finna den bästa analysenheten och kom-mer fram till att för afrikanska förhållanden är det multiaktiva hushållet den bästa basenheten. Det multiaktiva hushållet befinner sig i gränsområdet mellan självhushåll och penningekonomi, mellan informell och formell ekonomi och mellan en stads- och en landsbygdsekonomi. Genom sin fallstudie från Botswa-na visar Hesselberg också på det dyBotswa-namiska och fruktbara i angreppssättet. Ma-bogunjes (1989) The development process: A spatial perspective baserar fram-ställningen till stora delar på exempel från Afrika, men har en helt annan infalls-vinkel än Hesselberg. Mabogunje behandlar utvecklingsproblem på en i huvud-sak interstatlig regional nivå. Enligt honom åstadkoms utveckling genom snabba storskaliga förändringar. Genom de olika angreppssätten kompletterar Hesselberg och Mabogunje varandra.
En annorlunda ansats i afrikansk utvecklingsgeografi finns i Bells (1986)
Contemporary Africa: Development, culture and the state. Bell gör ett lyckat
försök att skriva Afrikas geografi genom att kombinera politisk-ekonomiska strukturer med kulturella värderingar. Arbetet är mycket influerat av samhälls-teoretikern Giddens och hans användning av ”praxis” som central drivkraft i samhällsförändringar. Bell hämtar huvuddelen av sina exempel från södra Afri-ka. Ett arbete som är ett måste för alla som intresserar sig för afrikansk ”utveck-lingsgeografi” är den ovan nämnda Watts (1983) Silent violence: Food, famine,
and peasantry in northern Nigeria.
Utveckling i Afrika baserad i lokala institutioner är temat för många strate-giinriktade böcker som utgetts i början av 1990-talet. Den geografiska basen både när det gäller miljö och samhälle är den gemensamma nämnaren. I
Deve-lopment from within: Survival in rural Africa (Taylor och Mackenzie 1992)
fo-kuserar författarna framställningen på lokal afrikansk kunskap och afrikanska initiativ som alternativ till utvecklingsmodeller introducerade utifrån. De empi-riska studierna är från Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya och Tanzania.
”Afrikas kris” har under de senaste årtiondena nästan blivit ett standardut-tryck så fort kontinenten kommer på tal. Det gäller främst den ekonomiska och statsvetenskapliga litteraturen men också i geografiska arbeten. ”Fattigdomskri-sen” behandlas på ett översiktligt och pedagogiskt sätt i O’Connor (1991)
Po-verty in Africa. De officiellt rekommenderade lösningarna på ”krisen” ställs
mot lokala lösningar i From feast to famine. Official cures and grassroots
reme-dies to Africa’s food crisis (Rau 1991). Ett nyare arbete med geografiska
vink-lingar som kan nämnas här är Africa in crisis: New challenges and possibilities, redigerat av Zack-Williams, Frost och Thomson (2002).
