BETH-EL COLLEGE

OF NURSING

History

Beth-El School of Nursing was established in 1904 by an agency of the Methodist Church. The school was registered and approved by the Colorado State Board of Nurse Examiners in 1909 and was operated as a department of the Beth-El Hospital until 1943. The hospital was acquired by the city of Colorado Springs in 1943 and renamed Memorial Hospital. The hospital has been operated by a nonpolitical Board of Trustees since its acquisition by the city, and the School of Nursing has continued as a de-partment of the hospital. Throughout this time the school has offered a diploma program for the educational preparation of nurses.

In 1983 the Board of Trustees of Memorial Hos-pital voted to change the mission statement of Beth-El School of Nursing to offer a baccalaureate degree in nursing as a College of Nursing.

.BSN

Today

Beth-El College of Nursing is a single purpose

college offering a curriculum leading to a bacc

alau-reate degree in nursing. Graduates of the program

are eligible to apply to the Colorado State Board of

Nursing to take the RN licensure examination.

The program requires four years plus a summer to

complete. General education courses are offered

through a consortium arrangement with the

Uni-versity of Colorado at Colorado Springs or may be

taken at a college of choice.

1986

Graduation exercises for the Class of 1986 are planned for Friday,

May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Shove Memorial Chapel at Colorado College has been chosen for the ceremony. Twenty-six students are expected to graduate.

During the first semester of the 1985-1986 academic year, senior students welcomed a special student Martina Teekat, R.N. from Germany, to the Peds rotation. Students and faculty enjoyed their brief associa-tion with Martina and hope to see her at state boards in July.

Social activities planned for the Class of 1986 include a school Spring Banquet at Greenstreets Restaurant where good food, fun and entertainment are anticipated, and Seniors will be honored.

A luncheon is also scheduled during those last few weeks of school. The faculty and the Class of 1986 are presently making plans for that event.

As the end of the last semester approaches, the Class of 1986 can look back over three years of hard work and realize they are now ready to face the world. They are busy making plans for their futures and looking forward to becoming R.N.s.

Graduation events for 1936 Graduates

Graduation exercises for our

twenty-four graduates was held at the

First Methodist Church. Dr. N.E.

Davis of Columbus, Ohio, Secretary of

the National Board of Hospitals,

Home and Deaconess Work of the

Method-ist Episcopal Church, delivered the

commencement address.

Social activities for the graduates

included dinner parties at Stratton

Park Inn given by Mr. and Mrs. Sidney

Phelps, and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hanner.

Mr. Hanner was Superintendent of

Beth-El Hospital. The alumni gave a

homecoming luncheon in the

hospital parlor and a picnic was held

on the hospital lawn. The busy

graduates also attended the annual

junior-senior party as well as a party

given by Bernard Vessey, Russell

0. Law and the D.F. Law Company.

(from the Gazette Newspaper: June,

1936)

Ruth Edwards remembers Beth-El

General Hospital as it was from 1933

to 1936. The west wing of the origin -al building was the administrative

section of the hospital. The first

floor included the cafeteria, kitchen

and drug room; second floor held the

parlor, switchboard, administrative

offices and the surgery suite. The

third floor held the surgical rooms.

The east wing first floor was

pediat-rics, second floor medical and third

floor was obstetrics and nursery.

Classes were taught by doctors as

well as the Director of Nursing Education, Mary K. Smith. Other

nursing instructors were Mrs. Sanstrom

and Mrs. Gardner. Students had experience working at "The San,11

The National Methodist Episcopal

Sanitor-ium for Tuberculosis which was situated

just east of the hospital, as well as

a choice of pediatric experience at

Denver Children's Hospital or Beth-El's Crippled Childrens Unit.

The senior class was housed at Idlewold Dorm, located at 311 North Logan. The students remember the cold

nights in the sleeping porch of this remodeled TB sanatorium. A 50 year graduate remembers all her instructors and classmates as playing a

signifi-cant role in "molding a discipline which is what I am in character and

personality. 11
