= = = = = =Initial returns for the 1974 sugarbeet crop were announced in Fremont today by the Northern Ohio Sugar Company.
The company's payment will average $30 per ton and will total nearly $12 million for 700 growers who produced beets this year near Fremont, Findlay and Blissfield, Mich. It will be mailed Saturday
(Dec. 14).
The record figures were announced by Robert N. Sanborn, area agricultural director for Northern Ohio Sugar. He said the initial payment averaged $13.50 per ton more than the first payment this time last year because of higher sugar prices and higher sugar content in beets harvested this fall.
Sanborn said additional company payments for the 1974 beet crop will be made whenever warranted, possibly as early as February, and
possibly more frequently than for the 1973 crop. Five payments were made for 1973 beets, instead of the usual three. Under their partici-pating contract with Northern Ohio Sugar, growers share substantially in net proceeds from sales of sugar and by-products throughout the marketing year ending next September.
Growers' initial returns for the 1974 crop will be increased by an average $2.38 per ton with Sugar Act compliance payments, now underway, financed by a federal tax on the sugar industry.
