James F. Wirshborn

Mountain States Weather Services

820 South Summit View Drive

Fort Collins, CO 80524-3670

Dear Jim:

Attached is the information you requested concerning the 10 August 1994

precipitation consisting of storm totals map and mesonet data for 10 August storm.

A

couple points of caution concerning the storm totals map. First, the 3.5

maxima just south of Livermore has no data point to substantiate it. This maxima is

centered about two data points — —2.75 in Livermore and —2.75 just south of the

maxima. The maxima is a byproduct, "a rebounder" caused by the tension-spline

algorithm used to produce the plot.

The second point of caution is the gradient of the storm totals to the west of

Virginia Dale. Lack of data has reduced the gradient. Looking at other areas with data,

one could assume the gradients were much tighter on the west side than is shown by the

plot.

I hope these data are helpful. Please call me if you have questions, comments or

concerns at 491-8601.

Sincerely,

Pete Clement
