OUR MANY THANKS TO YOU, MARILYN,
Dr. Carole Schoffstall, Dean Beth-El College of Nursing
& Health Sciences
The merger of Beth-El College of Nursing & Health Sciences with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on July 1, 1997 brought two institutions with a commitment to excellence together in an effort to benefit students and to better serve the nursing
education needs of Southern Colorado. Glancing back, Beth-El enjoys a proud heritage of providing education and service to the community for almost a century. Glancing forward, Beth-El has a future filled with hope
for expanded programs, plus research and service opportunities which will help define the landscape of health care for the region and beyond.
Beth-El was founded as the Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital &
Training School (1904 -1911)
Our new hospital was named the Beth-El
Hospital and Training School (1911 -1943)
Beth-El Training School and Nurses' Home, which was
built in 1917 was located just east of the current hospital. After 1923, we were known as Beth-El School of Nursing.
In 1943 the hospital was bought by the city and renamed Memorial Hospital. The school retained its name of
Beth-El.
2
Contagion Hospital was built
in 1919. In 1952, Beth-El
began using it as the Senior
dorm
Idlewold Sanitorium was bought in 1928 and used as a dorm until the 1950s. Currently it is the Ronald McDonald House.
Where We Are Going
In 1974, Beth-El School of Nursingmoved to an ENT Airforce dorm building which is now part of the Olympic Training Center.
In 1976, Beth-El again moved to another ENT building which was located
on the corner of Foote & Willamette.
In 1979, Beth-El moved to the 3rd floor, East wing of
Memorial Hospital The old Beth-El structure was enclosed in new brick work and remodeled.
In 1985, Beth-El became a college of nursing and moved
to 10 N. Farragut. The last 12 Diploma students and the
first BSN students graduated on May 22, 1987.
In 1990, Beth-El moved to this location
on North Academy Boulevard.
In December 1997, Beth-El moved to Vail House on the University of Colorado -Colorado Springs
campus. Class rooms and services are integrated
within the university.
On behalf of the University of Colorado, and most especially those of us at CU - Colorado Springs, I extend a
warm welcome to Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The opportunity for CU-Colorado Springs
to partner with an established institution with a nearly century-old record of service and excellence is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any university. Beth-El and CU-Colorado
Springs will thrive together as we continue to refine and expand our
commitment to our community, the
region, and the nation. Welcome to the
campus! Linda Bunnell Shade

BEING A NURSE ...

34You will never be bored.
You will always be frustrated.
You will be surrounded by challenges,
With so much to do and so little time.
You will carry immense responsibility
and very little authority.
You will step into people's lives
and you will make a difference.
Some will bless you,
Some will curse you.
You will see people at their worst -- and at their
b
est.
You will never cease to be amazed at people's
capacity for love, courage, and endurance.
You will see life beginning -- and life end.
You will experience resounding triumphs,
and devastating failures.
You will cry a lot.
You will laugh a lot.
You will know what it is to be human
and to be humane.

BETH--EL CLASS OF 1948
The 16 young women who would be the class of 1948 entered Beth-El School of Nursing on September 3, 1945. Patricia Ann Jacobs fondly remembers their days at Beth-El. Their uniform was blue with white collars and cuffs. The capping ceremony was held in Daniels Halls, which was the library and meeting room for Beth-El. Mrs. Youngblood was the Director of the school and the housemother ofr Ildewold, the senior dorm, was Mrs. Cunningham.
Patricia remembers classes were held in the basement of the Nurses Horne. The students worked "practically full time" with affiliations to the State Hospital in Pueblo and Childrens Hospital in
Denver for three months and then six weeks at Glockner Penrose Hospital to study Dietetics. Their Graduation was held in Shove Chapel on the Colorado College Campus, September 3, 1948.
The Class of 1948 did not have a year book. This is our salute to you. Congratulations on your 50th
Year Anniversary!

Beth-El College of Nursing was established as the
Colorado Conference Deaconess Hospital
Training School by the Women's Home Missionary
Society of the Methodist Church in 1904. Mrs. Wm.
Lennox and a group of public-spirited women asked
Mrs. AC. Peck (Frances E.), of Denver to join them
in establishing a Protestant Hospital in Colorado
Springs. Frances Peck was the wife of the bishop of
the Colorado Conference of the Methodist Church
and President of the Women's Home Missionary
Society. She remained a guiding spirit of the
hospital. The name Beth-EL, which means "The
House of God", came to her in the middle of the
night. She arose and wrote the words for the poem {
"Beth-El". The name was selected for the new
building being built at 1400 E. Boulder. The poem
was later set to music and for many years was sung
by the Glee Club as a benediction to their many
performances throughout Colorado and the
Midwest. u r ml h . u
