1959

On the afternoon of Monday, September 10, 1959, nineteen girls took a big step toward the future. This was our first day in Beth-KL School of Nursing. We came from various parts of the United

States including: Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, and Nebraska. Such a variety of people, luggage, boxes, collection of treasures and stuffed animals entered the residence at 1508 East Boulder. By that evening we thought that we had learned everyone's name; but when the next day came abd everyone changed clothes, we discovered that we still weren't sure about which name belonged to which face.

Our first week in the school of nursing was one of fun and new adventures. There was a student body picnic and a faculty

picnic, just to mention two of the activities that had been planned for us. We all went to the Garden of the Gods for fried chicken with all the trirmnings.

Our second week we began classes which were to pr€pare us for

our chosen caree. Will we ever .forget our trips to Colorado

(16)

College via the bus with its "blue fumes" and "Shorty" as our bus driver2 I think that this week had convinced us that it would be much easier to study Russian in only one book instead of the many,

many books which had been issued to us. Gradually the instructors began to get a little knowledge through to us, and by the middle of October we started to work on the floors. What a terrifying

experience that wasl We were afraid of the personnel, the instructors, the patients, and ourselves; but gradually we gained a little self confidence and were able to go about our floor duty with success.

During the winter of our first year, we studied and studied, and on March 28, 1957 we received our caps and official acceptance into the school of nursing. There were seventeen of us in the capping exercises and many of our parents were there to see us receive our caps for which we had all worked very hard. After a two week's vacation we all came back ready to start our Freshman year. We elected Miss. Gaston as our class sponsor and our motto was: 11We have climbed the hill, the mountain stands before us"•

Arter capping, we continued our classes and ward experience, each day taking another step towe.rd our goal. We had our happy moments and also our sad ones, with the instructors and our housemother getting a little bit unhappy with us at times, but in August of 1957 we finally received our JW1ior stripe.

In .March of 1958 we parted to begin our affiliations. We

took our pediatric nursing at Children's in Denver, our tuberculosis nursing at National Jewish in Denver, and our psychiatric nursing at Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo. During these months we made new friends and new experiences which were all a part of our nursing career. How.ever, all of us were happy when April of 1959 brought us back to Beth-El and our long-lost classmates.

As we are nearing the end of our education, we look back on the past two and one half years and are thankful that we had the

priviledge and the opportm1ity to complete our nursing education. We will always remember the fun, the sorrow, the many friends we have made, and the sincere help and guidance that has helped us toward the right way in our chosen profession.
