projektnumreringen i innehållsförteckningen.

K
an Sveriges elbehov tillgodoses samtidigt som samhället blir miljövänligare?
sol-celler och solel. Solel är ett miljövänligt alternativ för elproduktion och kan användas inom flera områden;
KONTExTsAmmANFATTNING A1-A3
S
tudenter från den Kungliga Tekniska högskolan
valde genom ett samarbete med Stockholms stad
att undersöka Husbybadets möjligheter för
duktion. Husbybadets omvandling till en
solelpro-ducerande anläggning görs inom ett större projekt;
i Husbybadet. Efter diskussion med både kontext
A1 och A3 valdes solcellsmoduler från tillverkaren
YngliSolar. Modellen som valdes var Yngli Panda
270C-30b med en toppeffekt på 270 Wp. Modulerna
48 m
2var. På taket valdes horisontell montering och
på fasaderna valdes vertikal montering.
Solcellsmod-ulerna dimensionerades till de valda
trefasväxelrik-tarna med avseende på riktrefasväxelrik-tarnas maximalt tillåtna
dc-effekt, spänningsnivåer samt Stockholms övre
och nedre temperatursnivåer. Växelriktarna som
valdes är från tillverkaren SMA. Modellerna som
valdes är 3 st. STP 12000TL med en maximal
dc-ef-fekt på 12 kW och 3 st. STP 5000TL med en maximal
dc-effekt på 5 kW. Både dc- och ac-kablaget valdes
och dimensionerades enligt anläggningens behov.
För dc-kablaget mellan solcellsmodulerna och
Väx-elriktarna valdes Nexans Energyflex One Stripe 1kV
kopparkabel. Längden som behövdes
uppskatta-des till mellan 90 m och 100 m. Mellan
växelriktar-na och fördelningscentralen behövdes ca 400 m
ac-kablage. Modellen som valdes är Nexans FXQ Easy
1kV. Den sammanlagda förlusten för både dc- och
ac-ledningarna beräknades till under 1 % av
anlägg-ningens toppeffekt. Växelriktarna har enligt
tillver-karen en verkningsgrad på 97,7 % för 12 kW modellen
och 97,1 % för 5 kW modellen. Anslutning till elnätet
kvalitetssäkrades enligt svensk standard. Den totala
investeringskostnaden baserades på
marknadspris-er och förväntas nå 1,4 miljonmarknadspris-er kronor för ett färdigt
nätanslutet Husbybad. Detta baserades på
person-lig kommunikation med en person som studenterna
träffade under ett studiebesök och som informerade
om att kostnaden för en nyckelfärdig
solcellsan-läggning låg mellan 12 och 20 kronor per installerat
Watt-toppeffekt.
i systemet. Höga temperaturer bidrar till stora
mot-stånd i solcellerna och därmed minskad
produk-tion för hela anläggningen.
Temperatursförluster-na försummades under detta projekt eftersom den
maximala temperaturen för Husby och Stockholm
sällan överskrider 30 °C. En annan förlustorsak
är skuggningen från både vegetationen och andra
närliggande byggnader. Delprojekt A1 studerade
utveck-ling. Denna text tar upp några av projektets fördelar
såsom ökad miljörättvisa och social rättvisa. Men
diskuterar också de etiska dilemmana av
solcellsin-dustrin, såsom arbetsförhållandena under
I Husby,
KTH:s potentiellt framtida studenter.
ar-betsförhållanden i sina fabriker (Birch, 2010).
2008). Höga halter saltsyra i marken kan direkt
kop-plas till markförsurning, skadad jordbruk och
min-skad välfärd för den lokala befolkningen (Cha, 2008).
Solel från fristående solcellsparker behöver stora
ytor.
andra kritiska resonanshastigheten. Generatorns
av-kylning är komplicerad. Med en initial beräkning
es-timeras minsta möjliga rotordiameter för generatorn
utan att överhetta den. För en noggrannare termisk
analys bestäms lindnings-, järn-, ring- och
luftmot-ståndsförlusterna. Dessa värden används sedan i en
termisk ekvivalent krets för att undersöka om
över-hettning är ett problem.
Resultatet av projektet innebär en ny
generator-design som förbättrar effektiviteten och därmed ökar
elproduktionen i geotermiska anläggningar. Denna
effektivitetsökning gagnar även projektet ekonomiskt.
Fortsatta studier behövs. Beräkningar på generatorn
borde göras med mer komplexa och noggrannare
modeller.
Olje-
och gasindustrin har haft samma problem med
att utvärdera potentiella resurser. Där har man
investerat i forskning och hittat analysmetoder. Dessa
kunskaper skulle kunna anpassas och överföras på
det geotermiska området.
ETIsK ANALys A4
terrorism.
se ut i respektive land. Sveriges elenergi kommer
främst från kärnkraft och vattenkraft. Politikerna
används skall cirkulera i stängda kretslopp.
Under konstruktionen används
djupborrningsteknik och detta kan medföra
höga ljudnivåer för närliggande samhällen. I
planeringsstadiet bör byggingenjörerna föra
dialog med samhällena och intressegrupper för
diskussion. Tydlighet kommer att öka den allmänna
förståelsen och acceptans speciellt om man
visar att man försöker adressera de framkomna
problemen i möjligaste mån. Vid driften är den
största miljöpåverkan seismisk aktivitet. Dessa
mikrojordbävningar påverkar byggnader i liten
i värmeextraheringssystemet. Det är idag inte känt
vad som händer när värmereservoaren tar slut.
Några andra frågetecken gäller även värmeuttagens
påverkan på närmiljön. Det är inte känt än om
utvinningen även påverkar jordens inre. Innan
nämnts investeringar i forskning utökas.
Abstract—This project analyses a study on the profitability of a solar cell production in Husby, Stockholm. The production consists of 255 solar panels and lie on a rooftop of a bathhouse in the area. The production is intended to help lower the costs of energy that the bathhouse consumes on a yearly basis by using a form of “greener” energy. The results after calculations show that the cost of the production was 900 000 SEK which produces around 58 MWh per year. The energy produced gives a profit of 62 000 SEK on an average yearly basis.
i. introDuction
eneWaBLe energy has been an ongoing issue for many years. there are many forms from wind to hydroelectric to solar energy. this paper will focus on solar energy. solar energy comes from solar electricity. this electricity is formed from an electric voltage caused by light. this is referred to as photovoltaic energy. solar cells use this phenomenon called ‘the photovoltaic effect’ by converting solar energy into electricity. Photons from the sun excite electrons and allow them to carry electric current through photovoltaic material [1]. Solar cells have been in existence since the mid 1950’s. Back then they were mostly used to power objects in the earth’s ions sphere such as satellites [2]. today they are found almost everywhere used to power very big productions such as a whole village all the way down to powering your stop watch on your wrist. in 2013 a total of 4 gWh of solar energy was produced in sweden. this is actually a small portion from the rough total of the 145 tWh of renewable energy produced yearly in the country [3]. in order for this market to be profitable for companies to produce renewable energy a system called the electrical certificate was created in sweden. this means that the electricity suppliers are “forced” to buy a proportion of renewable energy and in this way provide a benefit to those that produce renewable energy. one megawatt hour electricity from renewable energy corresponds to one certificate [4]. the rest of the energy can then be sold in the electrical market. this market creates a more effective way to buy and sell electrical energy. the electrical market is a place where bids to buy and offers to sell electricity can be posted. these bids and offers create a supply and demand concept regarding the pricing of the energy produced [5].
this project will be about a solar cell production used to power a bathhouse in husby, a suburb of stockholm, sweden. the project was the work for a bachelor thesis project for the school of electro and system technique at Kth in stockholm
sweden. its main focus being on the profitability of a larger solar panel plantation in the stockholm area. the work for the project was divided into three different areas a1, which is this project, a2 by Khalid raouz & abeer mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. and a3 by Diako Shamsaddini, ”Underhåll och drift av en solcellsanläggning”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. this paper will focus on a1 whose main purpose was to calculate the energy production of the plantation. A2’s focus was on the infrastructure of the production and a3 was responsible for the estimation for the maintenance costs. This paper is divided up into 6 different sub sections. Part І is an overall introduction of the report. Part ІІ discusses the general theory that was used throughout the paper. Part ІІІ discusses the results of the project. Part ІV and V our sections on discussion and analysis and the conclusions that were drawn for the project. Part VІ gives reference to the acknowledgments that were needed throughout the paper.
ii. theorY
solar radiation is an electromagnetic radiation, most of the energy consists of wave lengths between 300 to 4000 nm and is distributed with 8% in the ultraviolet (uV), 48% in the visible and 44% in the infrared (ir) part of the spectrum outside the earth’s atmosphere. the earth’s surface and also the atmosphere send radiation too, but with longer wave lengths, about 4000 – 100 000 nm. the total amount of solar radiation that hits a horizontal surface is called global radiation (also called irradiance). global radiation is the sum of the direct radiation from the sun and diffused radiation which consists of scattered radiation from molecules and particles and parts that are reflected from the clouds [6]. according to smhi, swedish meteorological and hydrological institute, the global radiation is increasing. measurements taken between 1983 and 2005 shows that the global radiation has increased about 8% [7], see figure 1.

Vertical mounted solar panels have both positive and negative effects, see figure 6.
figure 6, difference between vertical and horizontal solar panels
as shown above, in summer, vertical mounted solar panels do not collect the same amount of radiation as horizontal solar panels. But in winter (especially in sweden, because of the low position of the sun) the vertical solar panels actually collect more radiation than horizontal mounted solar panels [9]. But in winter the sun is weaker and more often obscured by clouds. if solar panels are mounted vertically, the global radiation data will have measurement errors because the global radiation is measurements on a horizontal surface. a simulation made with PgVis using 90 degree inclination angle gave the following results:

a comparison with table 1 shows that vertical mounted
solar panels clearly collect more radiation under fall-winter period.
B. Interconnection of modules
an interconnection of modules is done to reach a specific voltage that is required from the system. often this requirement is from the inverter, for example an inverter’s input that is specified for 125-250 Vdc needs about six 30-volt
modules in series [10]. modules sometimes allow a small current to flow back (in the wrong direction) through them. this can happen if the module is shaded, defected or removed. Because of this a bypass diode is connected in parallel with every module, see figure 7.
figure 7, module with a bypass diode
Diodes fitted in modules are known as bypass diodes because they protect the module by bypassing current in certain circumstances. some modules have also already built in bypass diodes, if so, no extra bypass diodes are needed [11].
C. Calculation of energy
the estimated energy in kWh from one module can be calculated with the following formula [12]:
( )
Where a is the module area in m2, r is the module efficiency in decimal, h is the global radiation in kWh/m2 and Pr is the systems performance ratio. the (maximum) efficiency r (under stc) of a solar panel can be calculated by [13]:
( )
( ) ( ) ( ) stc power (Pmax) is given by the manufacturer and can also
be calculated by multiplying the stc nominal voltage with the stc nominal current. stc stands for standard test conditions: radiation=1000 W/m², cell temperature=25°c, Wind speed=1 m/s, am=1.5. am stands for air mass [14].
D. Performance Ratio (PR)
example of losses that give the Pr its value can be inverter losses, temperature losses, cable (ac, Dc) losses, shadings and others. in this report the losses from temperature and shading will be represented (other losses are calculated by Khalid Raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014).
1) Temperature losses
When light shines on the solar cells, they warm up and the electrical output of the module changes. under global radiation of 1000 W/m2 it is found that the cells are warmer
than the surrounding air by about 30ᴼC. The efficiency from solar cells drops with increasing cell temperature. solar radiation causes an increase in cell temperature. cell temperature can be described with the following formula: ( )
Where tcell is the cell temperature, tair is the air temperature,
r is the radiation (at moment) and c is a constant which have been measured by many solar plants to be around 0,025-0,03. The cell’s voltage varies 2 mV per ᴼc, and this means that the efficiency for silicon solar cells drops about 0,4 % for every degree the temperature increases [15]. the temperature dependence can be studied by an i-V curve [16], see figure 8.
figure 8, the effect of cell temperature on i-V curve (at 1000W/m2) for a solar cell module
the temperature in sweden rarely exceeds 25ᴼC, except for short periods during the summer. therefore cell temperatures cannot increase more than 50-55ᴼC, due to a low voltage variation can temperature dependence be neglected in calculations. the efficiency of solar panels increases in cold temperatures. actually solar panels power production works most efficiently in cold, sunny environments. unfortunately, the coldest regions in the globe near the poles are areas with weaker sunshine and shorter days [17].
2) Shading losses
modules should be mounted in places where the sunlight can reach them; shadows of tall objects can prevent the sunlight reaching them. even a small shadow on just one cell can affect the performance of the whole module (another good reason to use a bypass diode, see “Interconnection of modules”). A calculation of the exact amount of losses from shading is a very complex procedure. a simplified procedure is represented below [18]:
1. start by standing at the solar plant and turn south. 2. Measure the obstacle’s azimuths and azimuth is
the angle on horizontal plane calculated clockwise from south [19]), and then measure the height angle , see figure 9. an approximate measurement of angles can be done by using the hand’s four fingers, see figure 10. four fingers represent about 10 degrees.
figure 9, height angle and azimuth angles of the obstacle
figure 10, approximation of angles using your hand
3. use table 3 (for 45 degrees inclination angle or lower) or table 4 (for inclination angle between 45-90 degrees) to plot the position of the shaded area. Which means that to plot a rectangle by marking where
and
are, see table 6.4. summarize the value of all covered boxes (or fraction of a covered box). for example in table 6, the sum of the fraction of every covered box by the rectangle is summed.
the vertical axis in the tables below represent the value of and the horizontal axis represents the value of and the sum is an estimate of how much percentage of the annual insolation will be shaded. for more accurate approximation see [20].

E. Electrical Certificates
Electricity isn’t the easiest phenomena to handle. The storage and distribution process makes it difficult to distribute the energy to the consumer when needed. this creates an unbalance between the buying and supplying process. all these factors only contribute to extra costs for the producers. the electrical certificate was created to give the producer an extra income which makes it more profitable to invest in renewable energy [4].
the electrical certificate was introduced on may 1 2003. for every mWh of energy produced a so called electrical certificate is given to the producer, more about the law can be read in the document by ministry of industry, “Lag om elcertifikat”, regeringskansliet, year 2002 [21]. it is permissible to obtain certificates based on gross measurement, i.e. before own consumption. for the “micro producers” this means that certificates can be obtained even for the energy that is consumed by the producer. however, an investment of a meter (a device to measure the energy produced) should be done by the “micro producer”. if electrical certificates only are issued for the net measured electricity, i.e. the electricity distributed to the network owner, then a meter is purchased by the network owner. the readings are reported to “Svenska kraftnät”, which then issues certificates based on these readings [22]. the swedish power grid uses a system called cesar which publishes statistics of turnover and prices for electrical certificates .

figure 11, electrical certificate price development (2013-2014)
a demand for electrical certificates is created by forcing electrical suppliers to obtain these certificates in proportion to how much electricity is delivered. this in return forces the buyer to pay extra for the electrical certificate when purchasing the energy.
iii. resuLts
the decision on where the solar panels should be mounted was decided by all three groups. the mounting was done so that it would be able to meet the requirements from all three groups. the most important requirement from this group was to mount the solar panels so that maximum energy production could be achieved. after discussion, the solar panels were mounted so that about 195 modules would be mounted horizontally on a ceiling and about 60 modules would be mounted vertically on façades, see figure 12.
figure 12, map (of the bathhouse) showing where the solar panels would be mounted
the modules that will be used are from Yingli PanDa type 270c – 30b and are made by mono crystalline silicon, see attachment 1. the module efficiency (under stc) is about 16,5 % and each module have the stc power (peak power, Pmax in “Calculation of energy” above) 270 Wp. that means
the total stc power from the system is 255×270 Wp = 68,85
kWp.
the interconnection of modules are done after choosing the type of inverter that will be used, this task is done by Khalid Raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. Which chose six inverters, three of them are of the type stP 12000tL-10 and the other three are of the type stP 5000tL-20 (for more information about the inverters, see Khalid Raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av
solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014). the stP 12000tL-10 inverters are used for the horizontal mounted modules and the other three for the vertical mounted modules. the minimum Dc voltage for both these types is 150V and the maximum Dc voltage is about 1000V. that means the voltage that have to reach the inverter’s input have to be in that interval, but because of the inverter’s requirements, to connect a certain amount of strings of modules to one input, the following decision is done:
each inverter of the type stP 12000tL-20 will have two strings of 22 modules in series connected to input a and one string containing 21 modules in series is connected to input B. the other three inverters will only be connected through input a with one string of 20 modules connected in series. for more information about the inverter’s connection, see report by Khalid raouz & abeer mrad, ”anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014.
the modules that will be used have the stc nominal voltage 31,1V that means 22 modules in series will produce about 684 Vdc and that still is in the inverter’s DC voltage
interval. a bypass diode will be connected in parallel with each module to minimize the effect of shading and other problems that can occur, see “Interconnection of modules”.
to calculate the energy production ( 1 ) is used. the area a of one module is 0,99m × 1,65m = 1,6335 m2, the efficiency is 16,5 %. the performance ratio (Pr) will be assumed to be 1 for now. calculation of the energy production (of one module) have to split into two calculations, the first one uses the values (for radiation, h in equation ( 1 )) from table 1 and that is for the horizontally mounted modules, and then a calculation for the vertical mounted modules is needed and uses the radiation values from table 2. the table below shows the monthly production from vertical and horizontal modules:

as said above, 60 modules will be mounted vertically and 195 modules horizontally, which mean that the yearly energy production from vertical mounted modules is 227617 Wh × 60 ≈ 13,66 mWh and from horizontal mounted modules is 253513 Wh × 195 ≈ 49,44 mWh, and the total yearly energy production from the sol plant is about 63,1 mWh. Keep in mind that the calculations above does not include losses.
this report will represent the losses from shading and temperature, other losses are calculated by Khalid raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. as said above, the losses from temperature can be neglected, see “Temperature losses”. The losses from shading can be estimated with a simplified procedure, see “Shading losses”. figure 13 shows which areas in the sol plant that can be shaded.
figure 13, areas that can be shaded by the tower
the tower is about 1,5 - 2 meters higher than the horizontal solar panels. By following the steps in “shading losses” can the angle be measured to about -20 degrees, to -45 degrees and to 25 degrees. using table 4 can shading losses for vertical modules (see table 6) be calculated to:
taBLe 6
the rectangLe is shoWing Which BoXes WiLL Be useD for the caLcuLation
(1/4) × (2,8) + (1/2) × (2,8+2.2) + (1/6) × (3,3) + (1/3) × (4,5+2,5) = 6,083
and using table 3 can shading losses be calculated for the horizontal modules to:
(1/4) × (2,2) + (1/2) × (1,8+1,2) + (1/6) × (2,2) + (1/3) × (2,5+1,2) = 3,65
that sums up to 9,7%, but as seen in figure 13 only about 50% of the solar plant is shaded from the tower. that means only 50% of the annual energy production will have 9,7% losses from shading. that is the same thing as assuming that the annual losses from shading are about 4,85 % for the whole sol plant.
the energy losses caused by the inverters that are used in the system must be accounted for as well. Khalid raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014, has calculated that the inverters that are used for the horizontal mounted modules have an efficiency of 97,7% and the inverters used for the vertical mounted modules have an efficiency of 97,1%. cable losses have been estimated by Khalid Raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014, as well to roughly 1%. using these efficiency factors can the net energy production be calculated. the net energy production from the horizontal modules is:
49,44 mWh × 0,9515 × 0,977 × 0,99 = 45,5 mWh and the vertical modules yield:
13,66 mWh × 0,9515 × 0,971 × 0,99=12,5 mWh
that means that the total systems net energy production can be estimated to 45,5 mWh + 12,5 mWh = 58 mWh.
iV. Discussion anD anaLYsis
the data that was collected on the bathhouse shows a consumption of energy at an average of 130 mWh per month see figure 14. the calculations from the solar panel production gave an average monthly intake of 4,83 mWh per month.
figure 14, husby bathhouse energy consumption
this is just under 3,5 % of the bathhouses monthly needs. 96,5% of the energy needs for the bathhouse would be needed to be produced by other means. Due to the electrical market pricing this energy saves about 4.350 seK a month. this is assumed that 1 kWh is purchased around 0,9 seK/kWh, see attachment 2. totaling a saving of 50.000 seK/year on electrical power.
as said above, 60 modules will be mounted vertically and 195 modules horizontally, which mean that the yearly energy production from vertical mounted modules is 227617 Wh × 60 ≈ 13,66 mWh and from horizontal mounted modules is 253513 Wh × 195 ≈ 49,44 mWh, and the total yearly energy production from the sol plant is about 63,1 mWh. the tower is about 1,5 - 2 meters higher than the horizontal solar panels.
13,66 mWh × 0,9515 × 0,971 × 0,99=12,5 mWh
that means that the total systems net energy production can be estimated to 45,5 mWh + 12,5 mWh = 58 mWh.

the data that was collected on the bathhouse shows a consumption of energy at an average of 130 mWh per month see figure 14. the calculations from the solar panel production gave an average monthly intake of 4,83 mWh per month.
figure 14, husby bathhouse energy consumption
this is just under 3,5 % of the bathhouses monthly needs. 96,5% of the energy needs for the bathhouse would be needed to be produced by other means. Due to the electrical market pricing this energy saves about 4.350 seK a month. this is assumed that 1 kWh is purchased around 0,9 seK/kWh, see attachment 2. totaling a saving of 50.000 seK/year on electrical power.
the electrical certificate also offers an average of roughly 200 seK for every mWh produced [23]. this price varies throughout the year. about 12.000 seK is earned from the certificate. the summation from both of these savings averages a total of 62.000 seK/year.
the total cost for the production was roughly 1,37 million seK, see Khalid Raouz & Abeer Mrad, ”Anslutning av solkraftsanläggning till elnätet”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. a meter should be purchased to be able to measure the amount of energy the production produces. the readings can then be reported to “Svenska Kraftnät” which issues the electrical certificates for the production. the cost of the meter is very low (about 500-1000kr) that it can be neglected. the state also gives a compensation of a maximum of 35% of the total cost [24]. this means that the total cost is 890.000 seK. maintenance costs are quite low that they can be neglected, see Diako Shamsaddini, ”Underhåll och drift av en solcellsanläggning”, degree project, school of electrical engineering, Kth 2014. at a 4,83 mWh production rate it will take a minimum of 14 years to pay for the initial costs. the actual production will be lower than calculated due to the progression of the power warranty of modules, which means that the modules will get older and cannot guarantee the same level of production as new modules.
figure 15, Progression of the power warranty
there is one way to improve the profitability of the production, that is to improve the efficiency of the solar cells themselves. having such a low efficiency ratio is a huge detriment to the production. much research is being done to improve this area. a research group from a company called spectrolab has succeeded to implement a system with close to a 40% module efficiency ratio [25]. these modules would increase the production rate by nearly 223% of what is produced now. this would drastically increase the profit margin of the solar plant. the cost of solar panels are decreasing [26], see figure 16.
figure 16, the price for solar panels has decreased
But solar Panels with higher efficiency factors are more complex. Due to the complexity of the panels they would cost more money than the ones used in this project with a 16.5% efficiency factor. that means that the solar panels in the future must be engineered in such a way that the efficiency factor is high while keeping a reasonable pricing on the panels themselves. Which probably will be so; because figure 16 shows that the solar panels price is decreasing. through these means costs will be lower, and the production will be higher.
V. concLusion
the net energy produced has been calculated to 58 mWh per year and the profits to 62.000 seK per year. the implementation of the production will cost roughly 900.000 seK. in order to pay for the initial costs it would take 14 years of production. therefor it was decided that the profitability of the production is not sufficient.
