Beth-El School of Nursing

On the afternoon of ~fonday, September

twenty

girl3 from various places in the United States began the

task of moving into the Ju .. "'1.ior residence at 1_508 E Boulder.

'3uch a variety of people, luggage, boxes, and stuffed

animals you've never seenl By that evening we had about

learned each others na:.nes, we thought. !Iowever, the next

cla-.:r when everyone had chan~ed clothes, we discovered we

st:U.l ~-reren It too sure about which nrurie belonged to what

face.

The first week in nurses training was mainly orientation

and I might add ~ - T~1.ere was t:.1e student body banquet

and the fac<1l ty picnic, just to na:rn two of the activities

that had been plan..YJ.ed. :-re went 'co Austin Bluffs for the

picnic a-v-id I mean i t was a nicnic. We stuffed ourselves on

f1--.ied c::1ick:en and all the tr':L'll...rnings and then took turns

r:tding around the Bluffs in Miss Gaston's new convertible

which she had won in a raffle. '3ome of the more energetic

me·nbers of the group too1r o-::f on a hike and came back to

report a ru .. "'1.-in with a snake which they decided was a

rattler. There has always been some doubt as to whether

this actually took place or not.

011r second ·wee~~ in training we began classes which were

to prepare us for the career we had chosen. That first

weeJr we were convL1ced i t would be much easier to study

Greek, and that Is about as much sense as we could make out

of those ~;iles and piles of books that were issued to us.

Gradually the instructors were successful in getting some

knowledge through to us, and by the end of October we were

r•eady for our first day on duty on the hospital ward. "What a terrifying experience that "'.rras 1 He were afraid of the

personnel, the doctors, the patients, and ;nost of all

our-selves. As _ t iine went on we began to feel more at home in

t:1e hospl tal situation and whereas there were very few of

us who loves our classes a.-rid studying, we all enjoyed our

hours on duty and were very proud of our acco~nplishments.

One night in October we all went to bed (as good kids

should) only to be rudely awakened by a thu.'1dering herd of

Juniors, yelling at us to get up and grab whatever ment the

most to us. 3o~ne of the things that weren It grabbed!

Any-way, we were escorted downstairs and taken through a 11spoolc

roo~i111 ( at 1 a..T:1. no less). ':·le were bodily f'orced to take a

little pi l l and then served sandwiches and cot.fee. .From

the::.~e we ·went be.ck upstairs to the living room and were

initiated in a "l!ery beautiful a..Y)_d sii11ple cei-•ru:nony, after

which we were told to return to our sleep. I dare say there

was little sleeping the rest of' that nightl .As for the

little :pills, we discovered the next morn:tng that our urine

3y lfa.i-•ch 1955 we had advanc'3d in oar studies and nursing

abi~i t\es t o the !)oint evei-•y st,ldent drea::ns of'--capping.

On !•larc.c1 25th we received our caps and official accepta.i-ice

into the school of nursing in a ver-y beautif'ul and insnir

-ins ceremony at the First. Lutheran Church.

-After capping we continued our classes a."11.d ward practi ce

each day feeling more like a nurse. We had our ups and downs during this period, ma~dng our instructors a."ld house mother very uriha:i:,py -,Ji th us at times, but we also l ike to

t}li:!1...1{ that perhaps there were also ti,1Jes when t:1ey were

just a little proud or us too. We finally r eceived our Junior stripe in September 1955.

By the end of March 1956, we were ready to begin our

affiliations. -Surprisingly enough, we we1•e very rel uct2srG

to leave our home school and our classmates, who by this

t i•ne were "fa::nily", but never-the-less we began leaving in pairs for tuberculosis nursing at Nat ional Jewl si:1 :i.n Denver

pedi atric nursing at Childre:-1 • s in Denver, and psychiatric

nursing at Colorado State in Pueblo. At these hospitals we

thoroughly enjoyed our experiences but were extre,11ely

quickly since the!l a..."1'1.d now aswe enter our l ast t ~ee months

or nurses training, we l ook back on the past two and a half years a."ld are tha.l'lkful that we had the privilege and

the sorrow, the many friends made along t~:1e way, and the endless help ~.nd ::;uidence given to us by all t:1.ose whom we

have worlred with, particularly our sponsors, Hrs. Mi l ler a...11.d Miss Burns.

Our life is like a voyase across a storm-tossed sea;

So:::ne safely reach the harbor, some fail the light to see.

Our life is lire a flight above t he highest clouds:

We know that we are on the way, but a mist

our goal still shrouds.

Our life is like a pleasant dream of joys that

seem so real,

A .foolish whim or coarse desire our "better

selves" conceal.

Our life is l ike a cloud, a flower, and a song,

Fleeting, frall, melodious, forgotten before

long.

Our life is like a shadow, a vapor, and a

breath,

Intangible, unseen, Our life is like

beauty rare,

unheard--and death.

an Alpine lalce reflecting

When we have .faith and hope

And know we're in God's care.
