With more than 150 programs of study and 78 un-dergraduate degree programs in eight colleges— and a faculty-to-student ratio of 16.5:1—students have access to a wealth of educational possibilities. Colorado State leads the world in disciplines such as human and animal health, clean energy and the environment, global and sustainable business, engineering, and climate research. Along with outstanding programs in the liberal and perform-ing arts, humanities and social sciences, Colorado State offers some of the top professional programs in the country in construction management, occu-pational therapy, psychology, communications and agriculture—and is home to the top-ranked public business school in the state.

We invite you to learn more about Colorado State, a university with vision, character and a commitment to excellence.

C
olorado State University takes its role in educatingstu-dent-athletes very seriously. Excellence is expected on the field and in the classroom.
The most recent NCAA academic statistics reveal that Colora-do State leads the Mountain West Conference in graduation rate for student-athletes at 66 percent – well ahead of the con-ference’s overall student-athlete graduation rate of 57 percent. In football, Colorado State is second in the MW, graduating 68 percent of its student-athletes – again, well ahead of the con-ference average of 49 percent. Additionally, CSU student-ath-letes graduate at a higher percentage than the general student body.
WORLD-CLASS ACADEMICS
Colorado State, howev-er, is not resting on its reputation for graduating its student-athletes. The state-of-the-art Anderson Academic Center, which has greatly enhanced the academic facilities avail-able for student-athletes, opened in August 2009. While the athletic depart-ment takes its role in the educational process very
seriously, Colorado State’s mission to provide a world-class education is at the core of academic success. U.S. News and World Report ranked Colorado State in its top tier in its annu-al “America’s Best Colleges” report. The university offers 72 majors and 27 minors, and many of its programs are ranked among the best in the country.
Colorado State continues to push forward in its mission to provide the best possible education. Construction recently was completed on the state-of-the-art University Center for the Arts and Computer Science buildings and the Rockwell Hall expansion at the College of Business.
• CSU’s Veterinary Medicine program ranks third in the country, also ranking third in national federal research dollars.
• BusinessWeek ranked CSU’s undergraduate College of Business program 67th. The mar-keting and business law programs were ranked in the nation’s Top 10 by the magazine. • In 2008, CSU conferred its 150,000th bachelor’s degree and 200,000th overall degree. • According to NCAA statistics, CSU’s graduation rate for student-athletes is higher than the graduation rate for the overall student body.

THE MOUNTAIN WEST
THIS IS THE MOUNTAIN WEST
From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the MW continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to com-pete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship. Now in its 15th year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 14 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to exper-iment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the-art basketball instant replay system.
The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, in-cluding the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders six MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado Col-lege, Colorado State, New Mexico and Utah State). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Divi-sion I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, respectively, while Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central, Southern and Northern Califor-nia. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean.
HISTORY
The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the pres-idents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New
Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and sta-bility among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Di-ego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State University joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and the University of Nevada on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San Jose State University and Utah State University joined the Conference, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institutions and 12 football-playing members.
When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s foot-ball champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emer-ald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2013 season, the MW has six contracted bowl affiliations – the Las Vegas Bowl, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl, Famous Potato Idaho Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

HEAD COACH BILL HEMPEN
BILL HEMPEN
Head Coach | Second Year | 26th Year Overall
Veteran Division I soc-cer coach and Colora-do resident Bill Hemp-en became Colorado State University’s first head women’s soc-cer coach on Feb. 5, 2013. In his first season at the helm of CSU, Hempen led the first-year program to a 2-13-3 record, producing the program’s first-ever win in its first-ever match.
Hempen is one of the sport’s all-time greats, ranking No. 20 in NCAA Division I history for career wins (278-201-47). In 25 seasons as a head coach he has developed 10 All-Americans, coached six players who have gone on to play professionally and guided his 1992 Duke team to the NCAA championship final.
He earned National Coach of the Year honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in 1992, and has been named conference coach of the year four times.
Hempen began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Northeast Louisiana in 1982 before assuming a full-time assis-tant coaching position at Centenary College in Shreveport, La., a year later. After three years at Centenary he joined the Duke men’s program as an assistant coach in 1986 and was part of a staff that led the Blue Devils to three NCAA tournament berths, including a national championship in his first season. When Duke added a women’s soccer program in 1988 Hempen was tabbed to build and develop that program from the ground up as its first head coach. He earned more than 160 wins in 13 seasons (1988-2000), coaching seven All-Americans and appearing in eight NCAA tournaments in his final nine seasons in Durham. In 1992, the Blue Devils advanced to the national championship game just five years after the team’s inception. After his tenure at Duke, Hempen spent 11 seasons in the state
of Colorado, transforming the University of Colorado women’s program.
Prior to his arrival in 2001, the Buffaloes had never produced a winning record. In 2003, Hempen’s third at CU, his team won the Big 12 title and advanced to the NCAA tournament, the first of six under Hempen’s tutelage. That year, Hempen also was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Hempen went 114-88-28 at CU before stepping down after the 2011 season. The Buffs advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2006, and during his time in Boulder, three of his players earned All-America status.
Even more impressive is how quickly he was able to turn the program around. In 2001, his first at CU, the Buffs went 3-11-1. The year following, his team went 10-8-2, marking the big-gest single-season turnaround in Big 12 history. Just one year later, his team was atop the conference standings.
Hempen has served as a scout and player development coach for U.S. Soccer since 2011. In that position he has identified players for the National Team and been involved in player se-lection, organization and coaching of the top Region III players. Hempen also has more than a decade of experience with mul-tiple club and junior national teams. He has served as Director of Soccer for Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette, Colo., for the past year, coaching both the boys and girls high school teams, in addition to overseeing the development of the middle and elementary school programs.
As a player, Hempen spent two seasons at Meramec Commu-nity College, playing goalie for the 1976 junior college national championship and 1977 runner-up teams. He then lettered two years at the University of Evansville, graduating in 1981 with a degree in health/physical education. After graduation, he was drafted by the New Jersey Americans of the American Soccer League.
Hempen and his wife, Stephanie, married in 1999. They have two children: Emma (14) and Lucas (12), and currently reside in Louisville, Colo.

where he was an assistant coach for the
men’s soccer team. After a year at Ripon
College, Bentley moved up the ranks and
accepted the job of associate head coach

2014 Roster
In its second season, Colorado State features a

The Rams return nine players from its inaugural
season, including its entire starting defense. In

transferred to play at Colorado State last year after
previously competing at Northern Colorado, while
Vaugh, also a local standout, returned home last

should help shore up the midfield for the Rams.
