district heating replaces cooling

Cold water from the lake replaced cooling machines at Hägglunds Drives in Mellansel. It did not just reduce electricity consumption but noise, surplus heat and the risk of leakage of refrigerants too.

District cooling can reduce both electricity use and climate impact.

As cooling systems contain refriger-ants that can harm the ozone layer and affect the climate if they leak out, every cooling system removed is one environmental risk less.

The project received grants from the climate investment programme Klimp and came to an end in 2008.

• Consumption of electricity has decreased by nearly 700 MWh per year. • Greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 163 tonnes of CO2 equivalents. • The use of refrigerants decreases as cooling systems are removed.

• Operating costs have been lowered. • Noise and surplus heat have decreased.

imPLEmEntation

There were around seventy cooling machines at the Hägglunds Drives workshop and office facility. It has been possible to gradually replace these with a system of district cooling, where the cooling is obtained from Lake Anundsjösjön. The system can be expanded, and it is hoped that it will be possible to cool most of the plant in this way in the future. The temperature of the lake water is sufficient for machine cooling without the assistance of additional cooling, but for com-fort cooling there is a cooling compressor that assists during the summer months when the lake water is too warm.

The change was preceded by extensive investigative work to test how each installation and machine works and to make sure that the district cooling is suf-ficient. The project has created a high level of engagement in energy issues among both the Board and staff. Since the plant has been bought by the Bosch Rexroth company, it is hoped that the favourable experience will spread to the company’s other facilities around the world.

There is a great global need for energy to cool buildings, including in countries in the temperate region. Energy-saving technical system solutions based on naturally available nearby sources of refrigeration, such as cold water in lakes, offer great potential in many countries. District cooling can offer an energy-efficient and environmentally sound alternative to traditional cooling systems.

The project is a good example of how it is possible to replace a large number of cooling units with a district cooling system, where the cooling comes from lake water. The results point to great oppor-tunities to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project has also reduced the total quantity of installed refrigerant, which is beneficial to the environment.

The project also offers great potential for spread, as the system can be expanded in the plant concer-ned but can also be introduced at other plants in the Group and in other operations. The new owner has launched a project where the experiences can be made of use.
