'Jn Appreciation

"A

friend

in need is a

friend

indeed"

If ever we

understood

the meaning of this

old adage, it has been during

the

past year.

For in finding ourselves without a qualified

school director,

our need

was

truly great

.

And if ever we appreciated a

fr

iend, that friend is

Miss

Ruth

Gaston.

She took us

under he

r

wing; and whatever vague doubts about the future

we may have

felt, they were quickly dispelled

when she took

her place behind

the director's desk.

She also joined our activities,

le

nt her

willing ear and

va

luable

exper-ience to our problems

,

and

led

us through another s

uccessfu

l

year

.

For

her

s

parkling wit that c

heered

u

s,

her wisdom

that guid

ed

us, her

high profess

ional standards

and

boundless e

nergy

that

inspired

us; we are

and will

be

ever

grateful.

Although the Nursing curriculum is very

full, there was time to think of others. Pro-jects were established to fulfill many goals. First, it provided an outlet whereby we could

release our abilities in avenues which were

like, yet unlike, our nursing course. Secondly,

we were able to employ various methods of communications. Thirdly, it opened our eyes further to see needs in our own community.

Fourthly, the community was able to observe

how we, as a unit, could work together effec-tively.

Projects include entertainment for the

patients of the Central Di vision of the

Colorado State Mental Hospital. Patients

look forward to the program and respond

positively. One comment which was over

-heard during a particular cornrnical number

was to the effect, "they're crazier than we

are!

"

''Happiness is sharing,•' was our theme in two Christmas programs to Nursing Hornes .

Each patient received a gift from Santa.

Refreshments were generously provided by the alumni. Decorations were made by the

patients at Memorial Hospital, and students.

Over fifty children from the Deaf and

Blind school were dressed incosturnesand

taken trick or treating. Their excitement and

enthusiasm will never be forgotten.

Our enthusiasm for projects is still high

Initiation started thursday night with the presentation of the rules, which were --- no make- up, no teasing of hair, wearing of name tage and shoes at ALL times, and standing in the presence of all upper classmen.

Friday night there was a hootenanny with the upper class

-men performing. Afterwards we went to bed, but were awakened at one a.m. to drink hot apple cider from a urine specimen bottle and eat chocolate tapioca out of stool specimen cups. Later the specimen cups were decorated for hats. Again at 2:30 a.m. we were awakened to write propaganda songs for the Juniors. When we went up stairs, our rooms were a dis-aster ---a tornado hit! We ate breakfast at 6:00 a.m. Satur

-day and then did as our big sisters wished. Sunday we had a kangaroo court for the uncooperative freshmen. All in all it was fun ... for all.
