Senior Irrigation Engineer Colo. Agricultural College Fort Collins, Colorado
Dear Mr. Parshall: L. T, BURGESS CHIEF HYDROGRAPHER W. T. BLIGHT CHIEF CLERK a DRAFTSMAN SUBJECT:
I am enclosing four sheets of tabulations of snow survey measure-roents made March 1, 1958, at the East Portal of Moffat Tunnel.
Also a tabulation of measurements made on the Amity Canal 20-foot Parshall flume. Have been unable to locate measurements from 1955 to 1955, incl. They are probably at La Junta. If you desire measurements during these years, we can supply them.
Sorry to have missed you this morning, but I was slightly under the weather.

SUBJECT:
Re: Measuring Flume Amity Canal
This will acknowledge receipt of yours of March 25rd, concerning your
studies and recommendations with respect to certain repairs which you recommend
to the Parshall measuring flume on the Amity Canal.
Last Saturday, Mr. Beach and I discussed this with the president and one
of the directors of the Amity Canal at a meeting in Pueblo. They are desirous of postponing the improvements for the time being due to dearth of finances, but we urged that the improvements be undertaken at a very early date. They advised us
that the:; would take the matter up with the full Board at once, and would endeavor
to make the improvements requested, by raising the present flume floor 18 inches.
We note that you recommend a concrete floor rather than a temporary
you
wooden installation, and, in this connection,/suggest the use of a tamped sand fill between the old and new floors, and that provision be made for some movement in the floor as a result of possible heaving by frost action.
We advised them that we feel it would be dangerous to use sand, and to
depend upon some movement between the new floor and side walls, as suggested by
you. We think that a very coarse gravel, or crushed stone, should be used instead
R. L. Parshall -- 2 5-28-58
provide thorough drainage, so that no possible frost action would later affect the new floor.
I want to thank you for your interest and the time you have spent in
this matter, which is duly appreciated. Very
t~
