CLASS HIBTORY
,··e could have had a tea party
To show what elegant young ladies we've learned to be,
But
we decided to show you How this came to be.Our story begins one fall about three years ago When as probies we entered this nursing school,
Knowing all. there was to lrnow,
With boxes, suitcases, trunks and sacks,
Record players, typewriters, and even stuffed cats. We entered our rooms with dismay
To find that our roomies, too, l'la.d all the array. So with hearts homesick, sad And blue
We started to unpack all this junk and more, too.
Heard that night at supper ( which we learned to eat in haste), 11I lrnow the name but it just doesn't go with the .face.11
The week wore on wtth dinners, lectures, breakfasts, too, Fitting of uniforms, and nursing instructors more than a few.
We listened to our big sisters--Such tales they did tell
Of the emergencies and patients they had that day, And of students who by the wayside .fell.
That week-end we all left for our parents to see, To wonder undecidedl:y if nurses we wanted to bel
In our second week of classes We began at dear ol'
c. c.
Psychology we just couldn't seeAni a maze of symbols Chemistry continued to be. Our stomachs we swallowed daily
As anatomy we took;
We named our dear, dead, ol' cats
Hector, Octivus, and even Little Snooks. Then there was the initiation night And much to our class's glee
We turned the tables on the Juniors Who thought that asleep were we.
So our year passes onward to Thanksgiving holidays,
And all sick, bruised, and disabled
We greet Miss Gaston the following Momay. Christmas time-ah, tl~at 's the time to remember
As on the floors for the first time, we made uncooperative bedsl Oh, our aching backs, bunions, varicose veins and swollen feett Really, kids, nursing can't be beat&
-March 2Sth was no longer in the near future,
For hurrah, hurray, and hallelujah, Capping Day was here. Cold and snow were tradition
And as old man winter lived up to that,
Sure enough, at eight o'clock we received our hard earned caps. So, the days passed quickly
Arxl June found us through with labs And found us feeling sick~
As every med.-surg. disease studied--1'ffi had1 Our Jimior year, too, a. lot of work meant As to special services off we went.
First we counted calories as menus we planned;
There were low residue, diabetic, and all the blancis. To surgery for our next stop;
That really made us hop
To learn instruments, sutures, and sterile technique; And those nights 11on call11 when we went without sleep1
Obstetrics and nursery was a happy place-There we helped usher in each new little face,
Guessing what each baby should weigh
And helped revive the nervous fathers every day. Then off to Children's for three months we went Where we learned of children and their ailments; There were measles1 mumps, and chicken pox, too, And all the tests that dear ol' K.T. threw1 Psych beckoned with a bewildering hand; It helped us each other to understand,
"Accept them even if they throw you across the room," We heard the instructors sa:y each noonl
Soon packed we again--off to J e-rlsh we did go
To face the ricketty beds, the bugs, and all the snow. The first day home we came wlth every little genn
To hope we didn't turn positive before the end of the tenn. Back to dear old Memorial we went
to live now in the Senior Residence, Where under Mrs. Nichols' loving care We faced the com:mg year.
When it comes to blood pressures we soon became pros As from surgery to recovery room the patient goes. IV's, drainage bottles, airways, and orders stat, Emesis basins, hypos, and a little more at that. Float experience brought emergencies galore:
Skiing injuries, poison ivy, heart atta.cks-please, no morel Senior experience-six weeks of head nursing lmow how;
We get to take phone orders and start IV' s now. Making o~ hours, helping Pre-Clins on the floor--Each day we learn just a little bit more.
-15-Sampling public health nursing, to clinic we went;
Professional .A.djustments and all the reports this meant, Reviewing Med.-Surg. and Pharmacology II,
Thank goodness, we're almost throught
Unifonns, pictures-graduation is almost here· Parties, friends, and all that's dear. ' Look ahead to the future with heed,
'!Believe in yourself and you shall succeed. 11
