Poisoned Bran Mash For Grasshoppers

The following bran mash mixture· is known as the Kansas Mixture .

. Paris Green or White Arsenic-3 lbs. Bran (Shorts Free) -50 lbs.

Syrup, cheap molasses-1 gallon. Wate:r-5 gallons. · Lemons-10. Mix the bran and Paris -Green or Ar-senic while dry; dissolve the syrup in the water; squeeze the lemons into this; and 1 finally chop the peel and pulJ;l. and add them also; pour this mixture into the bran and Paris Green and stir so as to dampen the mash thoroly. The, bran should be just wet enough to stick to-gether. Be sure and use Shorts Free

Bran.

This mixture should be thinly broad-casted on waste lands, the borders of the fields and about the roosting places of the Hoppers for the night. The above amount should cover about 6 acres. Put it out at or before sunrise and not later than 10 o'clock a. m. thus catching the Hopners after thei: nights fast ..

Dear Sir:

Session Laws 1915, pages 258-263, provided for the establishment of pest districts, for the extermination of p;airie dogs, and under that law heretofore pest districts were created and your land in Arapahoe County is within that district.

The State entomologist, through his deputies, has reported that your land was infested with prairie dogs and that they should be exterminated. Pursuant to said establishm.ent of pest dist':'icts and the law in such case made and provided the County of Arapahoe, p':'ior to February 1, 1922, or-dered the extermination of all prairie dogs in Arapahoe County. Said Act provides Section 6, page 261, Laws of 1915, as follows:

"The. reasonable and necessary expenses for doing such work shall be paid by the County without unnecessary delay, upon filing with the Boa ... d of County Commissioners of the Certificate of the said entomologist show-ing the necessity for such work, or necessary and reasonable expense there-of, and giving a description of the land or property upon which the work was done. And, upon filing such Certificate such charges shall become a lien on the property treated-collectible as taxes by the County T':'easurer upon the ·filing of such Certificates with him, in the event the property treated is real estate,

You are notified that the pests on your land have been exterminated and the actual costs a1·e ten (10) cents per acre and you are charged fo:r ... acres at the rate of ten (10) cents p~':' acre, a total of$ ... . You have the right to pay for this at once o.r the same will be placed as a lien upon your land and collectible as taxes by the County Treasurer.

THIS l\1EMORANDA OF AGREEMENT, Made in duplicate, Witnesseth:

THAT WHEREAS, the Board of County Comn1issioners have heretofore ordered the extei!'mina-tion of prairie dogs under the statutes in such case made and provided, and

\VHEREAS, notice has been proper and legally served upon the land owners in the County that can be found, and

WHEREAS, the owner of the land hereinafter set forth has failed, neglected and refused to ex-terminate prairie dogs on said land, and

\VHEREAS, it becomes necessary in order to carry out the orders of the County Commissioners that the prairie dogs on said land be exterminated a charge of ten (10) cents per acre has been fixed for the necessary costs of exterminating said prai!'ie dogs, which said ten cents per acre includes the furnishing of poison and the necessary labor in the distributing of the same and to completely ex-terminate said dogs from said land.

NOW, THEREFORE, THIS AGREEMENT, WITNESSETH: That the Board of County Com-missioners, hereinafter known as the first party 7 and ... , hereinafter kno\vn as the second party, have conttracted and agreed that said n-vost party will pay to said second party the sum of ten (10) cents per acre for the extermination of prairie dogs as: here-inabove set forth on the following described real estate, to-wit:

Said second party hereby agrees that ... ... will furnish all poison and extern1inate all dogs on said land and it is understood and agreed that upon the inspection of said lands by the Co-unty Pest Inspector or his legally appointed Deputy, and the report to the County Commissioners that the said pests have been exterminated that said first party will pay to said second party the sum of ten (10) cents per acre for the services perf01-von1ed hereunder and that until said report has been made as herein set forth no fees shall be paid by said County.

To All Landovmers of Arapahoe County, Colorado:

Notice is hereby given to all persons owning lands within the bound-ries of Arapahoe County, Colorado. that the campaign for the extermination

of the Prairie Dogs in all duly formed Pest Districts, will be continued this fall, 1922. The active field work to commence not later than November 1st, 1922; and that the final inspection date of the part of the county west ot the west line of Townships 4 and 5 South, Range 62 West, west to the west line of the county, shall be December 15, 1922.

Further, that all landowners of the eastern half of the county are

urged to, dur1ng this same period, make a cleanup campaign in order that

the few remaining dogs may lbe. killed.

This notice requires you to commence work not later than Novembm 1st and to be cleaned up and ready for final inspection by not later than December 15th, 1922, both inclusive, as set forth and required by the Pest inspection Act, amended July 12, 1915, 1921, of the State of Colorado.
