AP-P-endix: MMSE,
COP-Yri9!ll,
and You!
Copyright or Copy1eft' - Is it okay to use the Mini Mental State Examination if you haven't paid for it?Are you still using a photocopied version of the MMSE? You may be breaking copyright. A Perspective article published in the December 29 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, Copyright and Open Access at the
Bedside (httP-://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMP-1110652), discusses the legal implications of newly enforced copyright of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) for clinicians. The MMSE is now only available via a license ($1.23 per test) and is slowly disappearing from textbooks and other publications and can no longer be legally used without risking copyright infringement.
An article in the Lancet( Martin R, O'Neill D, Taxing Your Memory. Volume 373, Issue 9680, 13-19 June 2009, Pages 2009-2010) gives more background.
AP-P-endix: FYI - Why Do Wet
Fingers Wrinkle?
Why do wet fingers wrinkle? In "Are Wet-Induced Wrinkled Fingers Primate Rain Treads?" researchers propose they are an evolutionary trait.
AP-P-endix: Change is in the Air!
"Change is Good!" That will be The Appendix's motto for the coming year (2012). While we all loved the previous, bi-monthly version of The Appendix, it was becoming an increasingly difficult model to sustain. In this day of instant news and rapidly changing events, the Library staff found that many important items were being left out from the newsletter because of our publishing schedule. It was also increasingly taxing our IT capacity. After much careful thought and review, The Appendix Committee has decided to move to a blog environment.
What does this mean for you? First, let me assure you that all of the features, such as Research Tips, that you have enjoyed in the past will still be included in the new format but now there will additional features and information. There are several ways in which you may monitor The Appendix posts:
o You can find all of The Appendix content on the Library's blog, HSL News, where all of The Appendix posts will appear in the AP-r-endix Newsletter category.
o You may subscribe to HSL News to receive email updates from the blog when new content is posted (this will include non-Appendix content but all of the information is Library related).
o You can use the RSS feed option to add the blog to your reader.
o We will send out a monthly email digest that will list the titles of The Appendix articles plus a small snippet of the articles. This digest will be sent to all Appendix subscribers as well as to the Academic Announcements listserv.
o Finally, every other month we will compile the Appendix Newsletter posts from the HSL blog into a formatted web page and archive it on the Library's website.
We hope that you enjoy these changes and find the more frequent updates helpful. As always, if you have any comments, suggestions, or story ideas, please feel free to contact me at Julie.silverman@ucdenver.edu.

Ongoing Issue - CU AMC access to
Nature journals at Children's
Over the past months we have been contacted many times by CU AMC faculty working at Childrens Hospital, who are unable to access AMC-licensed Nature journals through our traditional proxy login process.
After many hours working with Nature Publishing and network administrators at both Childrens and AMC, we have still been unable to resolve these issues. However, to our knowledge, the problem has not been reported and does not occur at any other location other than Children's.
Here are two solutions for getting acccess to CU AMC HSL-licensed Nature journals at Children's. Depending on your workstation administration privileges, both may require your contacting the IT Help Desk at Children's. Please note: you must be fully affiliated with Anschutz Medical Campus for these options to work.
OPTION 1
1. Install the virtual workstation option from http://my:deskto12.ucdenver.edu . (May require local administrator privileges)
2. Log in to CU Denver My:
DesktoP-3. Go to our library: home 12agg_, then search for the Nature journal to which you desire access.
4. At the point of accessing Nature full text, you will be presented with the hsl -ez12roxy: login 12agg.
5. Alternatively, you may access the Pubmed link from our library: home 12agg_, then search for and retrieve all resources you need including Nature journal articles. At the point of accessing any licensed full text, you will be presented with the hsl-ez12roxy: login 12agg.
OPTION2
1. Install either the latest version of Internet Ex12lorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome. 2. Proceed as in option 1 above.
We welcome any feedback anyone may have about the cause of the Nature journals issue at Childrens using Internet Explorer. Please use the comments option on this post, or email us at library:.web@ucdenver.edu for individualized support.

We've been doing a little testing with Endnote XS and Papers for the Mac, using them for off campus access to full text. These are the settings we found to work for Endnote:
o Under Edit / Preferences go to Find Full Text.
o Uncheck Pubmed Linkout if checked, as we currently do not use this. o Check Open URL, if unchecked. Under OpenURL Path, enter:
htt12://dy.:3uq8jh2v.search.serialssolutions.com/
It's the same URL as our Find Journals service, so rather than typing the URL by hand, you may wish to visit the link, then highlight and copy the URL so you can paste it in to Endnote.
o Under Authenticate With, enter:
htt12s://hsl-ez12roxy.:. ucdenver .edu/login
That's it! Setup for Endnote on the Mac is exactly the same.
The news on Papers for Mac is not quite as good, as we in the library are not ready to support this application yet. The library's proxy URL is built in to Papers, so feel free to try it if you are a Papers fan. However, your mileage may vary when accessing full text from off campus through Papers. We CAN recommend using Papers in conjunction with the campus VPN.

Health Sciences Library Moving
to EZProxY.
We are moving to a new system on August 22, 2011 for off campus access. This follows many months of beta-testing by library staff. The new system is known as EZProxy, and is used by a majority of libraries world-wide who offer off campus access to their patrons.
There are several reasons for us to choose EZProxy, including: o ease of maintenance
o support from parent company OCLC
o compatibility with single sign-on technologies
o compatibility with off campus access options built in to citation management programs, such as EndN ote and Papers for Mac.
The new service is scheduled to launch on Monday, Aug. 22. A new login page will appear. In terms of how you will log in, there will be two small changes:
o Instead of entering your name, then campus ID, you will enter your campus ID, then your last name.
o Enter only your last name, do not include your first name. o Screenshot of what the new login page will look like
Please email Jeff Kuntzman, Head of Library: IT if you have questions or comments related to this change.

Additionally artists whose images illustrate or offer insights into scientific principles were also asked to take part. Of the hundreds of images submitted, thirty were selected by a national jury to be printed in large
format, framed, and hung in a traveling show. Opening in 2007 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, the exhibit has traveled all over Colorado and hung in museums in Mexico and New York City.
Art in Science I Science in Art is curated by Helen Macfarlane, MA and J. John Cohen, MD, PhD, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, with financial support from the CU President's Fund for the Humanities. The exhibit will be on display through the end of August.

Religion and Evolution: Why they still
haven't reconciled
Join us for a discussion with Dr. Jeff Kieft, SOM Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, on Tuesday May 3rd, 2011 at Noon in the Reading Room of the Health Sciences
Library. This discussion is taking place in conjunction with an exhibit about Charles Darwin that is currently on display in the library's Gallery.
Many mainstream religions have accepted the truth of evolution, and the world's most trusted scientific bodies have stated that there is no inherent conflict between faith and evolutionary theory. Despite this apparent reconciliation, the battle lines are still drawn and they remain focused on 'God vs. Darwin'. Why? Dr. Kieft has spoken about evolutionary theory and taught its importance at churches and community forums in Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri. In this presentation he will discuss some of his observations, experiences, and thoughts as to why the argument continues.
Librarian at HSL receives Chancellor's
DiversitY. Recognition Award for
FacultY. LeadershiP..
Health Sciences Library Access Services Librarian Tina Moser has received a 2011 University of Colorado Denver - Anschutz Medical Campus Chancellor's Diversity Recognition Award for Faculty Leadership. The award honors Ms. Moser's
extraordinary leadership and commitment to diversity efforts on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Ms. Moser and other Chancellor's Diversity Recognition Award winners were recognized at a luncheon on Friday, April 15 featuring Chancellor Jerry Wartgow and Provost Rod Nairn. According to HSL Director Jerry Perry, "Tina Moser is a rock star to the many middle and high school students with whom she works with every year."
Ms. Moser is the Library's liaison to the Anschutz Medical Campus' Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI). Between 2005 and 2009, the Health Sciences Library and ODI participated in the US Institute of Museum and Library.: Services grant-funded partnership "High School to Health Sciences," introducing traditionally
underrepresented students to health information careers. As part of that program, starting in 2008 Ms. Moser developed a health information literacy curriculum that was incorporated into a range of ODI pipeline initiatives. These programs - and the
relationship with the ODI - proved to be such a success that the Library has continued to support and participate in the ODI' s pipeline programs ever since, offering health information literacy instruction at strategic points throughout the various pipeline programs' curricula.
Perhaps the highlight of Ms. Moser's commitment to diversity, and of her contribution to this strategic priority for the Anschutz Medical Campus, is her recruitment and hiring every summer of high school students to work at the Library. Ms. Moser selects two students to take under her wing, teaching them research skills and how to use social networking media to teach and learn. These skills are valuable assets, and having them will benefit the students in their future college careers. The students are recruited from the ODI' s pipeline cohorts, and are deployed in the Library's Access Department. After their employment, the students have typically elected to stay in touch with Ms. Moser and asked her to serve as a reference. They've friended her on Facebook and maintained the kind of connection that can only be described as mentee to mentor.
We are proud of Ms. Moser's commitment to diversity, to librarianship, and to young people from all backgrounds. She exemplifies the best in her dedication to enriching the academic potential of the students.

traveling exhibit on Charles Darwin. Rewriting the Book of
Nature will be on display in the Health Sciences Library from April 10 - May 21, 2011. The exhibit is about the theories of Charles Darwin and was created in celebration of the 200th anniversary of his birth and the 150th
anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species.
At the Opening Reception Dr. Bruce Paton, cardiac surgeon, historian, and professor emertius University of Colorado Denver, will speak on "Charles Darwin: World's most productive invalid". Charles Darwin experienced ill health for many years of his life and the cause of his maladies has been the subject of much speculation in the medical literature. Dr. Paton will explore the diagnoses offered over the years and discuss how Darwin was able to cope with his illness and excel as one of the intellectual giants of the past centuries.
This exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health and the NIH Office of History.

Findlt is Here!
FindIT- a revolutionary new search research tool for AMC students, faculty and staff
The Health Sciences Library has acquired and launched a next-generation search engine for the Anschutz Medical Campus. This research tool offers unprecedented "one stop shopping" for 98% of the electronic resources that the library makes available to the campus.
What is Findlt?
In Findlt, journal article search results are displayed alongside books. Full text journal
articles are instantly apparent - watch for the simple yellow Full Text icon.
, 1 Health Soiences ·Library To refine your search, Findlt offers a number
Findl
·
t
of links, or "facets" down the left side of theweb page. These links are similar to what you
find at popular web sites such as Amazon.com; you can narrow your
search to journal articles, full text, or by subject simply by choosing the appropriate facet. Clicking facet links lets you "drill down" to narrow your search very quickly, rather than having to type more terms.
Curious about journal impact factors? Or how many times an individual article has been cited? Findlt will integrate Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports data directly in its search results -without you having to search a separate database.
We will retain all of the library's direct links to individual resources. We know that
these resources have their own native search syntax - what you use for searching will
depend on the situation- but our hope is that you'll give Findlt a try. You may search
from the searchbox on our homepage or search Findlt directly by clicking on the link
under Top Resources.
We think Findlt will speed up, unify, and simplify your research process, particularly
when you are just getting started on a new question or topic. We are eager for your
feedback, questions and comments. Please leave a comment here, submit a comment
from the feedback form in Findlt, or email me at julie.silverman@ucdenver.edu. Watch this space for Findlt tips and tricks
