Longer Pilot library hours at HSL

made Permanent!

After a year of experimenting and assessing hours, the Health Sciences Library recently decided to make 12 midnight the closing time Sundays thru Thursdays. This increase to

101 hours/week will become standard library hours starting in January 2011. These hours will be offered throughout the year regularly, including the summer, and only be interrupted by University and State holidays along with light reductions late in

December and around holiday times. This change represents a 15% increase in hours from when HSL first moved to the AMC from the 9 and Colorado campus.

The library will continue to assess student comments and needs around hours alongside its budget and the appropriate allocation of student fee revenue. Regular hours for 2011 with some exceptions will be as follows:

Mon-Thu 7:00 am - 12:00 Midnight

Fri 7:00 am to 6:00 pm

Sat 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Sun 10:00 am - 12:00 Midnight

Questions can be directed to the Head of Access Services, Douglas Stehle, douglas.stehle@ucdenver.edu, 303-724-2139.

Special Collections Featured Book

for November

The blue notebook: a novel by James Levine

HSL Medical Humanities/3rd Floor Special Collections WZ 350 L665b 2010

Author James Levine, a Mayo Clinic physician, was intrigued when he observed one of Mumbai' s child prostitutes writing in a notebook. Inspired, Levine writes a tragic and brutal portrayal of Batuk, a child forced into sex work at age 9. Through a twist of fate, Batuk learns to read and write while hospitalized for tuberculosis treatment as a young girl and we learn of her life through her own journal. A strange mix of girlish denial (she "makes sweet cakes" -her synonym for servicing customers) and worldliness (she manipulates an admirer for a pencil), provides resilience, and she survives the nightmare of the "Street of Cages."

Her literacy separates her from others in her sphere, but the hope of escape from poverty and exploitation is overshadowed by the health risks and danger of her work. Health professionals reading this work cannot miss the subtle signs of her ultimate fate. [Lynne Fox, Education Librarian]

Health Sciences Library Celebrates Gift

of Integrative Medicine Collection!

Health Sciences Library Celebrates Gift of Integrative Medicine Collection from Dr. Leonard Wisneski

Jerry Perry, Director of the Anschutz Medical Campus Health Sciences Library, is

pleased to announce the donation of a substantial collection of books in indigenous and integrative medicine from Dr. Leonard Wisneski of Conifer, CO. Dr. Wisneski is

founder of the Wisneski Institute, Chairman of the Integrated Healthcare Policy

Consortium, Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University, Adjunct Professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, and he holds a professorial appointment at Georgetown University School of Medicine. A reception in celebration of Dr. Wisneski's generous contribgtion will take place on October 21, 2010 at 3:00 pm in the Library's Reading Room, 3r Floor. Please see the Library's website

at httP-://hslibrary.:.ucdenver.edu/about/directions.P-h:P-for directions.

Dr. Wisneski is a member of the Library's Strauss Complementary and Indigenous Medicine Collection Committee, which was established in 1994 to provide advisement in the development of a collection of information resources in areas of non-Western medicine funded by a gift endowment from longstanding donor and library champion Mr. Henry Strauss of Englewood, CO. The collection of books donated by Dr.

Wisneski, numbering over 1,000, will be incorporated into the collection endowed by Mr. Strauss. In recognition of this substantial gift, the collection has been renamed the Strauss-Wisneski Indigenous and Integrative Medicine Collection.

Since 2007, the Committee has sponsored a very popular series of Anschutz Medical Campus programs featuring speakers and presentations on themes ranging from "The Top Five Herbs Your Patients Are Using" to "Curanderismo: Traditional Mexican Healing."

According to Perry, "Dr. Wisneski's generous donation nearly doubles the Library's information resources in the area of integrative medicine, enhancing a collection that has for nearly sixteen years benefited from the philanthropy of Mr. Henry Strauss. On behalf of the Library's users, we are thankful to both men for their vision, leadership and mission to serve. Len's gift takes an already significant collection to the next, signature level."

About his donation, Dr. Wisneski states, "My interest in the clinical aspects of

integrative medicine and its applicability to healthcare delivery has spanned over three decades and has led to the accumulation of a large collection of books. At this time I am pleased to share the valuable information contained within these volumes with the CU community."

(14)

Mr. Henry Strauss, reflecting on his philanthropy, notes "I have long been an advocate of study and research in alternative and non-western medicine. Much can be learned from these areas that will benefit our people. In order to study these subjects we must first begin to establish a reliable and broadly chosen repository of written and digital materials. That is what the Strauss-Wisneski Indigenous and Integrative Medicine Collection is all about."

Amesse Memorial Collection Moves into

the Information Commons at HSL

The Amesse Collection in the Health Science Library provides a leisure reading collection of novels, biographies, and nonfiction, as well as the Denver Post and a selection of popular magazines and newspapers. A small collection of movies on DVD is also part of the collection. Because of the Amesse family love of books, the

reading area and collection is dedicated to three generations of Amesse family.:

12hy.:sicians. The collection has been moved to a central spot on the first floor of the

library within the Information Commons.

amesse collectia

The collection was originally established with books from John C.

Amesse' s personal collection. Additional items are purchased from the Amesse Memorial Fund. The new dedicated space in the Information Commons on the 1st floor of HSL continues the tradition and resonates

Tradition, with the memory of John, his love of reading and the pleasures of a nook

Reading, in a library. Each book in the collection bears a bookplate designed by

and Eleanor Benson and printed by Frederic Pannebaker, friends of the Amesse

Memorial~amily. We hope this leisure hub provides a serene retreat from the hectic

Amesse world of medicine, and, in so doing, keeps alive the memory and spirit of

the Amesse family physicians. HSL proudly unveils the collection in a new location, a new space in the midst of the busy lives of our medical and health science students.

Every day hundreds of students work, study, collaborate, meet in groups, attend classes and learn in the information commons on the first floor of the library. With the Amesse collection in the heart of this fabulous first floor space, students will have opportunity to appreciate relaxation and browsing of a popular collection. Nearby in the new materials comer is an honor paperback collection - take one and go, no check out necessary. Materials from the main Amesse collection can be checked out at the service desk. HSL allows food and drink within reason. We ask users to take care and cover their cups with lids, bottles with caps and to always keep beverages and food safely away from computers and other technology. Library staff appreciate users cleaning up after themselves as do our custodial staff - - help keep your library clean! Mustard and Cheetos stains on the pages of books and journals are not appreciated by any

researcher, so please wash up first and always use clean hands when handling the print collections.

Library to Continue Pilot of Hours

Extension in Fall 2010

The Health Sciences Library will continue a pilot of extended hours in the Fall Semester 2010. Starting Augyst 16~ e Library: will remain 012en until midnight Sundays through Thursdays through December 16th.

Over the years, the Health Sciences Library has received numerous requests from students for longer hours of operation. In November 2009, the Library extended hours of operation to 1 am Sundays through Thursdays in a trial to determine whether the extension was sustainable. After an assessment in April 2010 of usage during the trial, and with the advice of student representatives serving on the AMC's Academic

Support Advisory Committee, the Library's leadership decided to extend the trial into Fall Semester 2010 but to cut back by one hour and close at midnight.

During the trial, Library staff conducted an hourly census of users in the building, beginning at 11 pm through to closing at 1 am. The following table details those findings:

Hour Block Average# Average#

Customers, Fall '09 Customers, Spring '10

11 pm-12m 18 13

12m-1 am 9 6

During Fall Semester's examination period, the average number increased by one for both hour blocks. Library staff are interested in obtaining additional feedback from our student users about extended hours, and will be conducting "mini-surveys" this Fall to add to the census data.

For more information about the extended hours pilot, please contact Douglas Stehle, Head of Access [ douglas.stehle@ucdenver.edu, 303-724-2139] or Jerry Perry, Director [jerry. perry®ucdenver .edu, 303-724-2133].

Live Building Evacuation Drill

Live Building Evacuation Drill scheduled for Friday, June 18th, 2010 7-9:30 am

The Health Sciences Library will conduct a live emergency evacuation drill this Friday, June 18, between 7am-9:30am. Patrons in the library during the drill can participate or "opt out". Those who opt out will be given a sign to post on the door or pod where they are working. However, if they choose to participate they will be given a token for latte and cookies.

The Campus Police department is coordinating the live drill with the HSL staff. The objectives of this exercise are to assess the ability to communicate the presence of a threatening individual in the Health Sciences Library amongst the staff and to the patrons, and to successfully evacuate staff and patrons from the library.

• All exercise communication will begin and end with the phrase "This is an exercise." This is a precaution taken so anyone overhearing the conversation will not mistake the exercise play for a real-world emergency.

• If you witness a violent event, please call Campus Police immediately :

Snake Oil, Hustlers and Hambones: The American Medical Show by Ann Anderson

Waring Collection WZ 310 A545S 2000

"Long before television and radio commercials beckoned to potential buyers, the medicine show provided free

entertainment and promised cures for everything from corns to cancer. Combining elements of the circus, theater, vaudeville, and good old-fashioned entrepreneurship, the showmen of the American medicine show sold tonics, ointments, pills, extracts and a host of other "wonder-cures," guaranteed to "cure what ails you." While the cures were seldom miraculous, the medicine show was an important part of American culture and of performance history. Harry Houdini, Buster Keaton, and P.T. Barnum all took a turn upon the medicine show stage.

This study of the medicine show phenomenon surveys nineteenth century popular entertainment and provides insight into the ways in which show business, advertising, and medicine manufacture developed in concert. The colorful world of the medicine show, with its Wild West shows, pie-eating contests, clowns, and menageries, is fully explored. Photographs of performers and of the fascinating handbills and posters used to promote the medicine show are included." Editorial review, Amazon.com
