~eriscape Colorado January 14, 1988 Minutes

Present: Kim Hout, Jim Feucht, Ken Ball, Sally White, Carl Wilson, Carol DeWolf, Wayne Wyatt, Barb Brunk, Dick Scott

Several old business items were discussed:

1. Denver Water Department has been working with the State Highway Department in the landscaping for the I-25/6th Avenue interchange. The Highway Department has agreed to change the bluegrass to a brame-fescue mix (estimated to save 30-50% on water consumption). The State Highway Department has formed a task force and is current 1 y work i ng on an 1-25 Denver r~aster Plan. Xeriscape will be a key element of the plan. A demonstration garden at Alameda

&

1-25 is slated for construction in 1988. The Denver Planning Department and AlA object to the informal design of the highway corridor that the t-1aster Plan proposes. FRXTF is going to send a letter of support for the plan.

2. George Kelly is getting together a monthly newsletter. FRXTF will fund him with $100 in return for receipt of the newsletter. He will send us one and we wi 11 d i st r i bute it to FRXTF members.

3. Goals comnittee submitted a report. Discussion followed and goals VJere unanimously adopted as written.

4. We tentatively decided to change our name to Xeriscape Colorado and see what kind of response we get. We also decided to quit distributing minutes from every meeting in the mail . Minutes will be available at the fo11~/ing

meeting only. Sally White will also coordinate and edit a newsletter. 5. Jim Feucht was nominated and elected as new co-chai rman. Ken Ball wi 11

continue to serve as co-chairman. Kim Hout will remain secretary/treasurer and Barb Brunk will be recording secretary.

New Business

1. Brian Pearson from RMHS showed us the plan for the 1988 Rocky Mountain Home Show on Apr i 1 7-10. It was moved, seconded and unan imous 1 y approved to exhibit at the first garden at the main entry (14th St.) to the show. No plant sale at this show--maybe at the Fall Denver Hame Show (Sept. 8-11).

'vIe wi 11 distribute informat ion and be at the garden to answer publ ic's questions. Maybe sell Cooperative Extension pamphlets on water conserva-tion at a slight profit. Four committees were fonned:

- Des i gn - Barb Brunk wi 11 coord i nate a des i gn team (maybe coope rat i ve effort with ASLA).

- Construction - Wayne Wyatt - Staffing - Carl Wilson - Plant Materia1$ - Ken Ball

(5)

Also talked about using nursery coupons at the garden. Bonnie EnnIs was suggested as contact.

2. It was moved, seconded and unanimously approved to establIsh an Individual merrbership corrmitment of $15 per year. This wi 11 Include: coffee for meetings, newsletter, certificate of membership, discount on national xeriscape council dues(?), maybe dIscounts at local nurseries(?).

ThIs mermership will help establ ish a base for funding and separate out people who are really interested in FRXTF.

3. Denver Botanic Gardens is offering a 7-week xeriscape course (two sections one meets Monday evenings 5:00 7:00, the other meets Thursdays 7:00 -9:00 p.m.).

It is not too late to register. Call the Botanic Gardens for details. 4. Denver Botanic Gardens is also offering a wildflower course. Call them for

details.

The Goals Committee met on July 23, October

and December 8, 1987 and January 12, 1988. We considered a broad range of questions related to Xeriscape and to our particular local program, including defining Xeriscape, justification for

Xeriscape, ways to proml)te the concept, ways to structure a lOGal program,

projects to undertake, and others.

The Goals Committee offers recommendations for consideration and adoption by the Task Force in the following areas: Group Direction, Group structure and Group Activities. On an informal basis, the Goals Committee points out the benefits gained from the open discussion, brainstorming and consensus process and

suggests that such functions be reconsidered at appropriate intervals.

Grouo Direction

o Somewhat more formal organization to assist in establishing the professional nature of the group (see Structure)

Conclusion

There is a strong consensus on the value of continued existence of this

local/regional Xeriscape program, the need for the information we provide and the ability of this group to provide that information. The group is widely viewed as an effective network and an information clearinghouse with an

important public policy message.

Kim Hout of Front Range Xeriscape Task Force said, "The plants listed in this direc-tory vary in their water require-ment, but will use less wa ter

than most typical pla,nts. You

will find familiar plants on the list as well as many new ones. The list includes only part of the

area's low-water requiring

plants. Interested persons can check with local nurseryman for additional plants which also

grow w.ell with less water."

Studies have showed that 50 percent of the total residential wa ter use on the Front Range goes to outdoor landscape use. Using low-water requiring plants allows residents to save on water and watering costs with a savings potential as high

as 60 to 80 percent.

XERISCAPE COLORADO! Minutes for May 12, 1988 Carl Wilson, CSU Extension

Jim Feucht, CSU Extension Gary Finstad, Soil Cons. Sally White

Chester Butler, Master Gard.

Janet Hughes, Co. Dept. HWy. Ken Ball, Denver Water Dept. Kim Hout, Aurora Water Cons. Albert Pearson Jr., Master Gard Harold Rayor, Master Gardener The meeting was called to order by Jim Feucht at approximately 9:40

a.m. Attendees were introduced, and new members representing Master

Gardeners were welcomed. Master Gardeners who assisted in the Rocky

Mountain Home Show were given a one-year membership in appreciation of their efforts.

First item of discussion was the difficulty surrounding the change

of location for the previous month's meeting. The resulting

con-fusion led to insufficient attendance to hold the meeting, thus there are no minutes.

Financial summary was presented after Kim Hout's arrival. As of the

end of March, the balance on account was $866.86; with deposits and expenses related to the Home Show in April, the net balance for May is $1283.21, pending resolution of a claim by Chuck Tribble on

damage to landscape rocks provided by his company. Ken Ball will

negotiate on the $130 bill received from Tribble; Carl Wilson moved that Xeriscape Colorado pay based on the results of the negotiation and the motion carried.

Old Business

Membership: Jim raised the question of by-laws for discussion. It

is possible for an organization to set up by-laws without

incorpora-ting. Chet Butler indicated the Master Gardeners had recently done

this; he and Carl will get a copy of their by-laws and evaluate

relative to XCO needs. Jim also suggested Garden Show Inc. as a

possible model. Chet and Carl will report at the next meeting.

Benefits associated with membership were discussed. The $15 basic

membership fee was formalized, and Ken presented a prototype of the "magic color" coffee mug for evaluation as a token of membership in

XCo. The mug has a full color Xeriscape logo, with the message

"Really Saves Water" hidden in the water drop, which appears when

the mug is filled with hot liquid. The mugs are available from

widdico at $5.30 each in quantity of 144; reducing to $4.55 at 288 count.

After discussion of quantity to purchase and means of distribution, Janet Hughes made the motion, seconded by Chet Butler, as follows: Xeriscape Colorado will commit to purchase one gross to begin the ordering process and seek partners in purchasing the second gross. Other organizations who may be interested will be contacted; those

(17)

that participate will receive mugs @$5.30 with xeD keeping the

balance above $4.55. The motion carried unanimously. Half the mugs

committed to xeD will be held for distribution as member benefits,

the other half may be sold directly (suggested at $7.50) or through

retail outlets (suggested at $10). A brief information sheet will

be developed and distributed with the mugs, to let purchasers know they are supporting a local water conservation educational effort. Ken will contact widdico about ordering; others will contact

potential partners for the second gross of mugs.

Organization Name: The suggested new name, Xeriscape Colorado, had

not been formalized. Gary Finstad made a motion to adopt the name,

with the addition of an exclamation point to clarify the "Xeriscape"

in the name as an active verb rather than a noun. After discussion,

the motion carried 6 for, 2 against with one abstention.

Rocky Mountain Home Show: Followup comments on the Home Show were

presented. Al Pearson mentioned that several people inquired about buying the materials (plant and otherwise) used in the garden

dis-play. Jim Feucht pointed out the absence of information on the

garden in the show guide/magazine, and suggested in future shows, that the show organizers be provided a press release or article explaining more about the garden.

Thirty-eight Master Gardeners distributed information and answered questions at the Home Show garden; they were offered complimentary one-year XeO! memberships.

Kim Hout initiated discussion of the relative benefits of the Home

Show vs. the Garden and Home Show. It was suggested that the timing

~ of the Home Show was better relative to the availability of plant

materials for gardens, and that the Home Builders had been

especial-ly supportive in providing a highespecial-ly visible garden location. As

there are fewer gardens at the Home Show, the contrast to other exhibits generates more interest, which helps compensate for the

lower attendance. The general consensus was to continue with this

show, as the Garden

&

Home Show has not readily provided space.

Harold Rayor suggested that xeo not spend the time and effort on a

garden, but concentrate on distributing information. Al Pearson

asked whether the nursery and landscape industries would make more

money on traditional landscaping than on Xeriscapes. Kim Hout's

reaction was that they probably would not. The question merits

further checking, as low production costs may allow higher markups and volume turnover on traditional materials, making them somewhat more profitable.

Plant Directory: The question of validity of some nursery listings

in the Source Directory was raised for discussion, based on comments by Gayle weinstein to Gary Finstad and Sally White following the

April non-meeting. Kim Hout pointed out that any credibility

con-cerns would reflect on the nursery, rather than on XeD!, as we

indicated in the introduction that the directory was reporting

responses to nursery surveys. The purpose of the directory was to

provide basic information to the public and stimulate interest in

to less water-conserving plants. Kim defended the directory as an

attempt to promote the concept, rather than achieve academic accuracy. New Business

NXCI Video Script: Ken Ball reviewed the script for a national

Xeriscape video. The NXCI board will have a phone conference on

5/16 to discuss the video and other business. The format of the

video is a cross-country hot air balloon trip which shows Xeriscape in use in each region. Ken commented on the slight attention given Colorado in the script.

Conference Proposal: Jim Grabow received a proposal from NXCI to

provide a "turn-key" Xeriscape conference for our region. NXCI

requires a $5000 upfront fee to begin planning the conference, will

handle all details, and takes a cut of the registration. Kim stated

that Jim has offered to ensure a source for the fees, if XCO! would

like to act as host. Kim made a motion that XCO! explore acting as

host and technical advisor for a fall conference at no cost to XCO!

and with possible cooperation by MWCI. The motion was passed.

Littleton Rotary Project: Referred to XCO! by Torn Honn (MWCI) ,

Littleton Rotary wants assistance with a Xeriscape demonstration

~arden. It was agreed that Jim Feucht will request additional

lnformation and refer i t to the Technical Advisory committee, and that XCO! can provide primarily review and referral; not materials and labor.

Aurora Mall Booth: Kim approached XCO! about participating in a booth at the Aurora Mall June 18th, and moved that we co-sponsor. Harold seconded; Jim F. amended to co-sponsor with CSU Extension, and the motion carried.

Interscape 25: Janet Hughes gave several XCO! members copies of the

Interscape 25 landscaping plan. Comments are due June 1.

E470 Landscaping: E470 has published "Landscaping Concepts" which

reflect a "commitment to Xeriscapell, and include the following

specific measures: irrigated grass will be tall fescue; micro-climates will be used to advantage; and landscaping will depend on

sensitivity to nearby areas. 60% of the area is still in high

maintenance and high water-requiring landscaping. Ken will respond

to John Arnold.

Xeriscape Fact Sheets: CSU Extension fact sheets on Xeriscape are

now out-of-print. Ten thousand copies have been distributed since

November, representing unusually high demand for these fact sheets. Representative Matt Jones was unavailable to speak at this meeting

due to legislative session. The meeting was adjourned at 11:30 a.m.
