The Challenge at Glen Canyon
As always it is a pleasure to meet with .you again here at Caesars Palace.
I would llke to spend·rny time on today's·prograrn bringing you up to date on repair activities at the Glen Canyon Spillways.
As most of you recall, the site of the gre'atest damage to public property
during the high flows of 1983 was at Glen Canyon Darn. There we sustained damage in the range of 33 million dollars. It, however, is an excellent example of how the Federal Government can react in times of emergency. With
a minimum of lead ti~e we had crews in place beginning the task of repairing
the damage. The total repairwork on both sides took about 14 months to
complete.
But a repair job is only as good as its ability to withstand the forces
that caused the damage in the first place. On August 15 of this year we
tested that repairworK with a test that actu.ally exceeded what nature threw
our way in 1983.
· I believe the best way for me to explain to you what happened is to present
a portion of a motion picture we produced documenting the repair activities.
This is 15 minute clip of a 27 minute longer version which, by the ~1ay, is available to any of you for showing to your water user groups or other civic organizations.
