Preliminary studies relative to establishing a network of obser-vation wells on the Western Slope are under way in May. A man is presently in the field inventorying and selecting possible observation wells. Periodic measurement of water levels in the wells will serve
as an index of ground-water conditions in that part of the State and will be very useful as background in future appraisal studies.

At the request of the state Department of Health, the Quality of Water Branch of the Geological survey outlined a cooperative project
for collecting quality of water data in the state. Funds to support the mutually agreed upon project were requested by the state Depart-ment of Health. However, as the state funds were not appropirated, it will be necessary to postpone collecting the much needed data.
A new gaging station was established on the Gunnison River below Blue Mesa Dam at the request of Region 4 of the Bureau of Reclamation.
Good progress has been made on the Surface Water Report for the 1962 water year. We plan to send the report to the Government Print-ing Office in a week or two and expect to release it by July 1.
