people. An estimated ninety people came to the National Xeriscape Council (NXCI)

meeting to learn more about its activities. Ken Ball mentioned that the City of

Greenwood Village is planning to become a national member.

and advance planning will be needed to make this happen.

Better inpact and name recognition would be the goals of such an approach. A

discount

coupon is being distributed. If a garden is installed, the group feeling is

that a choice between the spring RM Home Show and fall Colorado Home Show should

be made.

Catching gardeners at the beginning of the season and at a time when plant

material could look well are important considerations.

Ken Ball has been doing the bulk of the work to organize a xeriscape booth at the

RM Home Show.

Both he and Larry Watson (for plant materials help) were thanked

for their efforts. A model of

the

xeriscape gardens designed by Arvada parks

designers is complete, on display at Arvada

,

City Hall and will eventually be

avail-able for a traveling educational display. Ken requested help with construction and

tear down of the display garden. Dates are March

and April

Contact Ken for specific times if interested. Kim Hout is coordinating booth staffing

and also needs volunteers.

The awards committee nominated several landscapes for awards during the ALeC trade

show including the

facility,

2)

Foothills Art Center in

Golden, and the Millenium Office Complex on Orchard Road.

Discussion of the time

and atmosphere in which the awards were given brought about a decision to postpone

these to the fall xeriscape conference. Bill Cassel made a motion that the ALCC be

given an award for xeriscape cooperation - Carl Wilson ammended that to specifically

recognize the northern ALCC chapter for their efforts in development of the Fort Collins

xeriscape demonstration garden. The motion as ammended and the use of

$25

to purchase

the award was approved. A static xeriscape booth will be on display in the lower level.

Cont. Minutes P. 2

~

Planning for the Denver October Xeriscape Conference is proceeding. Carl Wilson

reported that the speakers selection committee has developed a time schedule for

the conference and a tentative list of desired speakers.

Final recommendations

from the committee will be finalized and reported within the next week.

Kim Hout

reported that chanqes and logistics have held up signing a final contract with

John Duke to coordinate the conference organization.

This contract should be

resolved shortly. Klm also reported that Metro Water Conservation Inc. has voted

to contribute $500 towards the conference.

Plant 1.0. Program

Carl detailed elements of the program and progress to date. The color flyer

publicizing 6 plants for

aMarc~Apri1

direct mailing to 225,000 Denver Water Board

customers will be

bac~

from the printer by February 20.

Horticultural Printers is

currently working up a bid to print color plant signage for nurseries on these

same six plants. A volunteer, Celia Caso has drawn B&W]jne art sketches of the

six plants and they are being photographed for newspaper publicity. Jim Grabow

has taken care of coupon layout and printing. The remaining element, a plant

locator

direct~ry

is stalled for lack of funds.

Carl & Ken will work up a proposal

and approach a bank to get this underway.

Larry Watson mentioned some confusion among

nurserymen over the plant pyb1icity program and how money was solicited. Carl agreed

this had occured and has worked with several nurserymen to clear up the

misunder-standing.

If greater authority were given to project managers, Carl suggested,

perhaps some of this type of confusion could be avoided.

Kim Hout agreed that this

sort of situation has the potential to develop in a lose-hint volunteer group like

this. Everyone involved is well-meaning and the project is still on track.

Part of the probe1m is identity. A need for letterhead without a permanent printed

address was pointed out by Bill Cassel. This would be particularly needed for the

fall conference.

Kim Hout will investigate prices and bring back an estimate by

the next meeting.

Bank Account

A savings account for the group seems to be the most cost effective way to handle

funds according to Kim Hout.

After investigating various possibilities, she

recommended an account tobe opened at the meeting place bank, Columbia Savings.

A motion to place Kim Hout in charge of the books with each project accounted on a

separate ledger was passed. A further motion to move remaining monies from the

CNA was also approved. An account will be opened after the meeting.

Aurora Xeriscape Ordenance

A draft landscape ordjnance will be presented to the Aurora Planning Commission at

a February

18

hearing.

Kim will send copies of the ordtnance to interested members

before hand.

Other Business

Kim has volunteered to continue serving as group chair for another year. Partly

because of the need for continuity until a more formalized chapter can be organized

under national by-laws, the group favored this decision. Kim was thanked for her

efforts over the past year.

(10)

Cont. Minutes P. 3

~

Kathie Faatz needs volunteers to help with the design of a small xeriscape demonstration

Longmont Civic Center. Terry Mowbray agreed to help.

A discussion of the need to educate lending institutions that it is O.K. to loan

money to the landscape industry for development of xeriscapes ensued.

No firm ideas

on how to tackle this concern were resolved.

A need to inform city governments of the development of reasonable xeriscape landscape

ordinances was

pairitetJ

out by Sally White.

It was mentioned that this is on the agenda

for the October conference.

A flyer on the "87 Homeowner Xeriscape Seminar Series" was distributed. Jim Knopf, a

L.A. in private practice will present eight separate seminars from March 14 through

May 14.

Thanks to Jim for his contribution.

Involvement of Colorado State University

In Xeriscaping--Water Conservation Through Creative Landscaping James R. Feucht

Extension Landscape Plants Specialist

The term xeriscaping originated during a meeting of representatives fran the Denver Water Department, the landscape industry and Cooperative Extension, Colorado State University (see attached "Water News", March-April, 1984). The first meeting recorded was on July 8, 1981. This meeting was held following severe losses of turf and trees on the grounds of the Denver Water Department. The problems were diagnosed by Jim Feucht on May 13, dur I ng a fie 1 d inspect ion with Sid Johnson (then groundskeeper) and John Wi lder, Water Department executive.

Long before this, however, CSU has been very active in water conservation education, particularly with respect to use of water on laWl1s and in landscapes.

Following the severe drought of 1977, CSU Extension was charged by the Governor to conduct statewide water conservation programs. Part of the program was the development of a brochure on water conservatIon in the home and garden. Several staff members in the Department of Horticulture, as well as Extension agents, were instrumental in developing the brochure.

Numerous press releases were prepared by CSU staff fran 1977 on concerning water conservation in home landscapes. Also developed was a cartoon sl ide

series (available also as overheads) on conserving water in the landscape (see attached copies). Following are some press releases on record in my files. These do' not include the many articles prepared by Or. Jack Butler, county agents, other CSU staff, Service-In-Action sheets and the Teletips tapes.

Green Thunb Magazine, Winter 1977 - Understanding A Bad Drought, J. R. Feucht, Vol. 34, No. 4

Since 1984, CSU has been even more involved with the xeriscape concept. The Xeriscape Task Force, composed of landscape Industry representat ives, rrunicipal water conservatIon officers, Soil Conservation personnel and CSU Extension workers has conducted several workshops, initiated the installation of xeriscape demonstration gardens in several cIties, sponsored xeriscape landscape contests, constructed public displays at the Garden and Home Show and other events, and is now the IIclearing house" for public xeriscape 1 iterature.

Included are five new Service-In-Action sheets (in press), a xeriscape guideline and a brochure on alternative grasses for use in low water landscapes. The Task Force is also cooperating wIth the recently-fonned Xerlscape Committee of Metro

~/ater Conservat i on, Inc. in deve lop i ng a "xer I scape rronograph".

CSU staff \~O are now closely involved include: Bonnie Ennis, Adams County Extension; Jim Feucht, Department of Horticulture; Larry Perotti, Douglas County Extension; and Carl Wilson, Denver County Extension. (See attached council list and Task Group assignments.) A National Xeriscape Council is also now active. (See attached.)

It is anticipated that the involvement of Colorado State University in this activity will increase since water conservation is a major concern in urban horticulture.

in the construction of the xeriscape demonstration

"

garden in Ft. Collins and

for their support overall. Diane Matt, attending from ALCC reiterated ALCC's

support for xeriscape.

Stationary - A design for letterhead stationary is not yet completed.

Kim wiil have

this by the next meeting.

Plant ID Program:

Carl Wilson reported that the Plant Focus flyer is printed and is now being

mailed to 225,000 Denver Water Dept. customers. Examples were passed around.

Horticultural Printers from Dallas are working on color signage for nurseries.

Ken Ball and Carl have developed a written proposal for printing the plant

sources directory to take to possible funding sources, probably a bank.

Appointments will be set to present the proposal in the next week.

A suggestion

to approach nurseries and landscape architects to advertise in the directory

to fund printing was agreed to be a better plan for the 1988 directory edition.

Nursery support is vital to all these efforts.

In

particul~r,

the Denver Water

Department needs to be thanked for their printing of the Plant Focus flyer by

Task Force members and the green industry. Everyone is urged to write letters

to the Board of Water Commissioners, Denver Water Dept., c/o Bill Miller,

Manager

i~

order to insure that publishing of such a flyer is repeated next year.

The flyer will obviously benefit the green industry. Several group members

favorably commented on the text of the Plant Focus flyer.

October Conference: The October 22, 23 date will not work due to unavailability

of hotel space. A contract has been signed with John Duke to coordinate the

conference. He is looking for the hotel site and we will know a firm date

shortly. An audio visual tour has been deemed advisable due to the late

October date. Jim Skiera and Jim Feucht volunteered to work on this project.

E470 Plan Review:

Copies of the E470 plan were passed out. Representative

Matt Jones of Adams County has asked the Denver Water Dept. to propose

alternatives to the "Ohio" landscaping that is being proposed for the roadway.

The group elected to comment on the landscaping. Task Force members should

respond to Ken Ball with their thoughts so a draft letter from the group can

be drawn up in time for approval at the April meeting.

Other business: A Genesee Plant booklet is now out which details the foothills

plants

_

found

in the Genesee Estate area. The booklet sells for $5.00 and

is well done.

A suggestion was made to invite more guests to the meeting such as Jim Borland,

a major contributor to the Genesee Booklet.

It was proposed that a day be set aside this summer to tour local xeriscape

landscapes. Carl Wilson volunteered to work on a tour.

Meeting adjourned: 11:15 a.m.

TV Channel 31 - PSA:

Chris Hinton is completing a public service announcement on

xeriscape seminar series. This was done on his own because he felt this was an

important community topic. The video tape was not ready for this meeting but will

be Shown at the next meeting.

National News:

Two new $5,000 charter memberships are in the works from water

suppliers in the state of Texas.

Membership is growing.

2,800 are now on the

contact list.

Stationary:

A sample stationary sheet sans address as put together by Kim Hout

was approved for use. T.H. Pickens may be able to do the printing at a low cost.

The return mailing address will be typed with the letter. This will save cost.

Kim will follow up on this.

R.M.Home Show:

A video was shot and will be shown at the next meeting.

Many questions were asked at the plant sales booth.

In particular, people want

to know designers once they find out where plants are available. The net will be

around $185.00. Visitors from hiqher elevations welcomed the new IIPlants of

Genessee

ll

book that was sold. Several compliments were given to Ken Ball for the

good looking garden. The Home Builders were also impressed.

E-470 Correspondence:

Ken Ball will send an interim letter promising a complete

critique pf the plan. Members with comments should respond in writing to Ken.

Please write, don't phone.

The written comments will be particularly important

when we make a comment review clarification of their plan. A formal presentation

will be scheduled shortly with the E470 Corridor Project group.

Xeriscape Experimental Golf Course Presentation:

Larry Stebbins and Bob Witting of the T.H. Pickens Technical Center of Aurora

Public Schools presented proposed plans for a xeriscape golf course development

of 40 acres behind the Tech Center at 6th

&

Buckley. The group offered the future

critique of our technical review committee and suggestions on funding sources

to

approach. The concept received favorable response but plans are very preliminary.

(22)

Continued FRXTF minutes P. 2

The course may be developed in stages as monies became available. Carl will write

a written response with these suggestions.

Plant 1.0. Program - Carl Wilson, Chairman.

Plant signs are in progress. New plant

photographs needed to be found because the prlnter would not approve the photos

that were submitted. The new photos were just submitted so it will be next week

before we hear on approval . The directory is in the final stages of proofing.

Ken Ball and Carl Wilson have presented two written proposals to major banks and

been turned down both times. They are still knocking on doors and will next try

to approach some large firms with in-house print shops.

Jim Skiera has met with

the Nurserymen Association but is out of town and a report won't be available until

next week.

Xeriscape Monograph:

MWCI has reviewed the work as developed by Ken Ball and plans

to publish it. The print run would be fairly limited (around 200 and be sold for

approximately $5.00). We could probably gain permission to reproduce this publication

FRXTF is given credit for writing the work.

The 2 p.m. June 11 MWCI meeting will be

held in conjunction with our FRXTF meeting at Three Stone Bldg. at the Denver Water

Dept. Members should plan to attend.

October Conference - A date and location have just been set. It will be October 29

&

30

at the Sheraton Hotel at 6th Avenue and Union in the Federal Center area. The

plann-ing committee will meet shortly. Time is growplann-ing short to be able to effectively

implement this conference.

Call for Slides - The committee working on an A.V. tour for the October conference

requests members to submit slides to Jim Feucht who will reproduce them and return

them quickly.

Volunteer needed to construct table skirt - A table skirt was rented for the booth

at the R.M. Home Show.

The group approved $28 reimbursement to Kim Hout for this

expens

·,

e.

Ken Ball has material if someone can stitch a table skirt.

Longmont developments- A call for bids will go out shortly to xeriscape the 18.5 Acre

Wastewater treatment site. The small demonstration garden at the library is being

designed with the help of Terry Mowbray.

Garden Tour: Members with suggestions on xeriscape landscapes

.

for the task force

to tour some day this summer should let Carl Wilson know.

After the group scouts

these sites, we hope to try to convince the Botanic Gardens to organize their

annual tour around a xeriscape theme in 1988.

Tax Exempt Number Needed Quickly: Our approach of granting agencies is rapidly

approaching a stumbling block over lack of a 501-3C number.

We need to

urg~ .

National to move on this matter.

Denver Post March 29 article: A response is planned to the newspaper article

quoting Hutchison Homes as stating that xeriscape is more expensive.

Ken Ball

will organize this effort. Slides of Hutchison's town house complex where

xeriscaping was alleged to be more expensive will be shown at the next meeting.

Phil Love and students from Career Enrichment Park (CEP) -Chris Bi·ermacher, Larisa Goebel, Tammie McDonough, & John Rockwell

Some 1000 students attend CEP community college daily and next year's horticulture program enrollment will be approximately 200. School

District 5'0 has budgeted $15,000 to the hart program for construction of an 8000 square feet public xeriscape garden between the school track and Lowell Blvd. Partners in the effort include CEP, City Parks, School District 50, and the horticulture students. An outdoor classroom is planned and money is ava~lable for xeriscape curriculum development. Preliminary blueprint plans as drawn by the city parks department (Sally Sheridan

&

Bob Lenahman) were presented. Suggestions from the FRXTF were requested. Several initial suggestions on a graduated arrangement of irrigation zones, separating exercise stations with some kind of walkway

(crushed dolomite, etc.), writing a maintenance manual for the . groundskeepers who will be caring for the garden, investigating plugging native grasses inst.ead of seeding, definite demarcation and labeling of water use zones, and computing the percentage of the garden in bluegrass turf. Plans will be referred to the technical review committee for

further comment especially on plant materials. Grading and installation of boulders will begin this week, the irrigation system will be installed over the summer and planting will begin in September.

for other projects.

El.f!n.t

1~12..!_ tKQgX.f!m: Carl Wilson reported that 175 sets of six signs have been received from Horticult ure Printers (signs were displayed). The signs are intended to allow nurseries to label the six plant

introductions in their nurseries. Sign costs of $10.30 per set were incurred in producing these. The local nurseries whose financial

contribution made this project possible include: Arapahoe Acres Nursery, Green Acres, Green Spot Inc. , Englewood Garden Center, Highlands

Hardwar~/Nursery, Bonsai Nursery, Wilmore Garden Centers and Little

Valley Wholesale Nursery. Signs have been sent to these lead nurseries

an~ Carl'·s mail expenses were authorized for reimbursement. Signs and "Plant Focus" flyers will be displayed at this coming weekend's People's Fair. P~blicity has gone out to the News and Post and should soon

appear. A direct mailing offering the signs to nurseries around the state is planned for next week. Suggestions to get an article into Colorado Green and the CNA newsletter were made. Carl and Kell will photogr~ph the signs for illustrating the articles. Perhaps the signs should also be marketed through National to other programs.

rl.§.n.1

:

Di.K~.Qj~.Qr:y-: Ken and Carl's proposal to print the plant directory has been turned down by several major dono~s. Until a donor is found, "bootlegged" copies will be circulated to those ,,..,ho could use this information. Sally, Ken

QQnQ§~t ~l~n: The response to the E-470 construction project

presentation was passed around for reading and approval prior to posting. The document was approved to be sent with minor corrections. A meeting with the E-470 planning group and FRXTF technical review committee is requested in the letter. Copies will be sent to ALCC, CNA, State Rep. Matt Jones and the state Highway Dept.

~ih Ay~~ ~ I~Q Lgng~caE~: The current plans for landscaping this major highway intersection will use 40 million gallons of water per quadrant per year according to a recent analysis by the DWD. A letter from the DWD Manager to the state Highway Dept requesting an 11th hour review of

Task Force

May 31, 1987

Dear Front Xeriscape Task Force Force Member,

The next membership meeting has been scheduled for THURSDAY, JUNE 11 at 2 p.m.

This meeting will be a joint meeting of the Task Force and Metro Water Conservation, Inc. The topic of the program will be on Xeriscape. This will be an excellent opportunity to spread the word of "Xeriscape" to

the area's water districts, related private companies and

interested individuals.

The program for this meeting will consist of:

*

A Xeriscape slide show presenting colorful scenes of

existing Xeriscapes, both residential and commercial.
