This book

is an

essay, a

s

tory in pictures, of

life at Mesa College. The

trend today

in

col-leges and

universities

seems to

be

to

assign

the student

an

IBM

number

and

bury

him

in

oversized lecture

halls.

Mesa

has

IBM

num-bers, but here

,

students

are known

by names,

not

numbers

,

for it

is

realized

that learning

invo

lves

much more than impersonal lectures

and

cramming

th

e

head with a multitude

of

incoherent

facts and figures. At

Mesa

learning also

means

discussing thoughts,

theories, and problems, academic or personal,

with the instructor

in

the

classroom,

in his

office, or

over a

cup

of coffee

in the

snack

bar.

But while the

instructors at

Mesa do

indeed take a personal interest in their pupils,

it

is up to

the

st

udent to return

that

interest

and

give of himself to create a more complete

college atmosphere.

At first

there is confusion, apprehension

and uncertaint\j .

.

.

(7)
(8)

but these feelings soon dissolve

into those

of familiarity and belonging .

(9)
(10)

. . .

and lasting friendships begin to grow.

(11)
(12)
(13)
(14)

Why?

What is to be gained?

What are we searching for?

(15)
(16)

L

To each his own,

and the search for

it

is unique

for each individual .••

(17)
(18)

-. -. -. and the origin of

individuality lies in the

ability to know ourselves

(19)
(20)

. . . but to truly know ourselves,

we must give wholly and completely.
