A DIRECTORY

NGO'S IN THE FORESTRY SECTOR

AFRICA EDITION

Prepared by:

THE T REE PROJECT

NGLS, New York

William Booth

(2)

The International Tree Project Clearinghourse (ITPC)

located at Non-Governmental Liaison Service, United

Nations, New York is an information and liaison

ser-vice for forestry-related activities of

non-govern-mental org anisations, governments, donors and U.N.

agencies.

I .

INTRODUCTION

The AFRICA EDITION is the first directory published by the Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS, New York) on NGOs in forestry-related activities in Africa. This is the first step in a process which will eventually document

the tremendous contributions of grass-roots organisations in the forestry sector. This edition does not presume to be totally comprehensive. However, it does seek to:

*

provide insight into the nature and scope of the NGO community in

Africa;

*

serve as a tool to assist NGOs with individual programmes and networking efforts;

*

facilitate information sharing and other linkages to support grass-roots efforts involving farmers and local communities;

*

assist NGOs in their own efforts vis-a-vis agroforestry,

afforestation on agricultural wastelands and the conservation of forest resources; and

*

stimulate consultations among NGOs and local groups.

Your input with regard to the content of the information as well as the format in which it is presented is a vital component of this process. In this way the AFRICA EDITION will be continually expanding in subsequent editions to service various needs.

Suggestions for additions or revisions should be directed to: The International Tree Project Clearinghouse
