1. Press Information on Xeriscape Contest Was Distributed: Jim Grabow mentioned excitement of winners and that the Rocky Mountain News wants to do i t again next year even better.

Dorothy Borland agreed on doing i t again with some revision to the guidelines and rules.

Larry Watson suggested that professionals be encouraged to submit so good design samples are promoted.

The group discussed possible combination with other awards but did not reach a consensus.

Ken Ball informed the group of TV 7's interest in a multi-part story on Xeriscape, possible brochures, Garden and Home Show involvement, etc. Mike Fenwick of Channel 7 will call back. ('Fo(C.\~e.s)

2. Conference.:

40 telephone calls as of this date and 12 paid reservations. Valley Crest cannot participate. Jim Grabow will call Carl

Furgeson of Mission Viejo to find a speaker for the maintenance . session.

The AFA will provide a speaker for the a,fternoon. Ken Ball will follow up on this.

Larry Watson would like to meet with Ron Pecoff - possibly pick him up at the airport and give him a tour the afternoon .of the conference. Ken will notify Pecoff of this.

All presentors and speakers possible along.with the task force will get together Monday, October 15, 7: 3.0 a.m. at the Water Department, Room 209, for the purpose of going over the

conference procedures.

A letter will be sent to all speakers by Monday, October 8, letting them know of the meeting and to give guidance on the purpose of the conference. They will be asked to turn in a typed summary of their presentation (no more than 10 pages -double space typed) ,at that time for publication.

All conference participants. should plan on attending breakfast at the Regency at 7:00 a.m. the morning of the cOnference.

Beta West/Gulf Building:

Dick Marshall reported and showed final drawings.

Plans are to use three native grass blends as demonstrations.

Site coverage 75% native grasses, 25%' blue grasses.

Lots o.f landscape accent features and detail points that can

be emphasized as Xeriscape.

Existing cottonwoods and moderate water demand trees would be

retained and designed around.

Jim Grabow suggested' a letter be sent .. to Beta West immediately

with the task force endorsement of the·.site asa demonstration.

Dick Marshall cemmentedthat the budget was in the vicinity of

$500,000 for landscape work.

Garden and Home Show:

Jim Grabew mentioned that Max Capren had been calling about

design concepts.

Dick Marshall said he would help put a team together to get

desi.gns by Nevember 1.

Jim.Grabow will coordinate the effort with Max.

The task force felt the 7 elements of Xeriscape should be shewn.

The group was given a tour efLarry Watson's house and

land-scape.

Low and no water areas were shoWn, Galleta. Buffalo

grass, etc. Despite the recent snews which broke trees.and

flattened plants, the yal!d was beautiful.

XERISCAPETASKFORCE

Programs - 1984

During 1984, the Xeriscape Program continued to expand, and to show

successes throughout and beyond the Metropolitan Denver Area.

This

summary is an overview which provided a "line-item" review of

accomplishments.

An

in-depth report will be available about the

first of 1985.

A.

COMMUNITY PROGRAM GROWTH

1.

Colorado

a.

Cities of Fort Collins, Aurora, Boulder, and Wheat

Ridge have now joined Denver in adopting Xeriscape.

Lakewood is considering.

b.

Plans for 1985 include formal adoption by most front

range cities and introduction of the concept to the

state.

2.

Out of Colorado

a.

Orange County California (So. L.A.) continues their

program.

The State of California will announce a

formal California wide implementation plan and 1/2

million dollar budget in 1985.

Riverside, CA is in

the process of initiating a program.

b.

Reno Nevada has started a program with the help of

Sierra Pacific Power Company.

c.

Austin, San Antonio, and Fort Worth, Texas have

implemented programs with Corpus Christi expressing

interest.

d.

Interest has been expressed in the

Phoenix~Tempe

area.

3.

Total involvement:

Ten "active" programs in four states

with an aggregate population of nearly five million people.

EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR PROGRAMS

1.

Professional Level

a.

1984 ALCC Trade Show - Xeriscape covered four hours on

two days;

total attendance of over 300

1984 CNA Trade Show - Xeriscape booth on display.

(1985 goal would be for one Xeriscape Seminar session

to be held.)

c.

"Xeriscape - The Future Today" -

Full day seminar

held October 26, 120 professionals attended the

seminar and 156 attended the featured luncheon

presentation and awards program.

2.

Lay Person Level

a.

Seven Saturday programs were held between May and July

at the Xeriscape Garden - Denver Water Department

Classes taught by volunteers from landscape profession.

Total attendance:

in excess of 250 persons.

b.

Colorado Garden and Home Show Garden Exhibit and

Educational Video Program that reached an estimated

10,000 persons.

c.

Denver Energy Exposltion- Booth (complimentary plants

by Wilmore), exhibit and seminar presentations. Total

persons reached by seminars: 30 . .

a.

DEMONSTRATION SITE DEVELOPMENT

1.

Denver Water Department Location

a.

Xeriscape Garden- Administration Building, sinage

improvements;· irrigation system zoning completed and

meters on all ninezonesi new species introduced in

turf (buffalo grass test conversion from blue grass),

perennials, and shrubs.

b.

Turf and ground cover demonstration at Moffat

Filtration Plant. Three 56' diameter rings completed

with five turf and five ground cover types each ..

Finished by cooperative help of the Green Industry.

2.

Home Builder Show Home Locations

a.

Sanford Homes Governor's Ranch - A single family show

home.

b. Writer and Wood Brothers have committed to Xeriscape show homes at next opportunities.

c. Interest expressed by a speculation custom builder in Boulder.

3. Commercial Office Park Sites

a. Beta West in southeast Denver. b. Interest expressed in Boulder. 4. Park Lands

a. City of Lakewood median strip proposal. Possibly a portion of a new recreational park.

b. City of Wheat Ridge median strip proposal.

c. Aurora plans to construct a Xeriscape Demonstration Garden during 1985. The location has yet to be announced.

d. A Xeriscape Demonstration will be constructed at

Overland Pond Educational Park in Denver. The park is being completed as a project of the Colorado Federated Garden Clubs, near Florida Avenue and the South Platte River.

5. Botanic Gardens

a. Denver Water ,Department provided $10,000 seed money matched by $5,000 CHRI money, and completed by a

foundation grant of $35,000 from the Arthur and Helen Johnson Foundation. Construction began in 1984.

1. The following organizations have endorsed Xeriscape and
