Teton trip

Left Denver 7:00 AM Friday July 13, 1951. Arrived Pinedale Wyo at 5:30 PM same day. Mr and Mrs Hal Brewer and RE Glover stayed at the Teton Courts at Pinedale.

Saturday July 14, 1951 left Pinedale about 7:30 AM and arrived at String Lake Campground about 12:30 in the afternoon. Pitched camp.

Teton trip Sunday July 15, 1951

Bruce Brandell led hike around String Lake Sunday July 15 1951. Mrs Brewer, Mr and Mrs Hilton in party. REG 7/15/51

Went on hike starting from Museum and crossing Jenny Lake by boat ($0.51) Hike to hidden Falls and return. Mr and Mrs Hilton, Mrs Brewer, Dr Cajori, Mr Hoffman and Son in party. In afternoon went to Taggart Lake. Saw beaver dams.

Tuesday Went on 14 mile hike to Lake solitude starting and ending with boat ride across Jenny Lake. Saw glacier lilies in bloom. Took pictures of Tetons. Mr and Mrs Hilton, Mr and Mrs Brewer, Dr Cajori,

Murchison.

Wednesday July 18 1951.

Washday. Did wash out of a 2 lb coffee-can, french style, by walloping with a paddle. Took pictures of camp work. Went to Jackson with Hal Brewer.

Rufous crowned sparrow. Seen in Teton national park at String lake camp. In open meadow with lodgepole pines in it. They were feeding young. REG

Stayed in camp. Fixed Stoves in morning with Henry Pringle chopped wood. Took pictures of flowers in afternoon. On hike along string lake saw Loon, Pink sided juncos, western tanager, rocky mountain jay and hairy woodpecker. Saw Rufous crowned sparrow while taking pictures of flowers and reported it to Hudson at the museum. REG

July 20 1951

Went to Phelps Lake with Mr and Mrs Hilton took pictures of flowers and of Phelps Lake. In evening went to the “chuck wagon” at Moose for supper. Got letter from Carol.

July 21 1951

Went with Harvey Gunderson to Kelly to take pictures of Teton range. Went up the Phelps lake road to get pictures of flowers but found them spoiled by the rain of the previous day. Hiked up the Glacier trail to take photos. Saw moose, saw bear on return trip. REG

July 22, 1951 Sunday

Stayed in camp. Washed clothes. Helped Frank Allen get his camp set up. July 23 Monday.

Packed in to high camp in Garnet Canyon with Frank Allen. Fixed a place and set up his tent. July 24 Tuesday.

Climbed south Teton Leader Bob Ellingwood. Took pictures. Those in party going up south Teton: Ellingwood, Glover, Marjorie Johnson, Kay Heinmuller

R Sam Fink (Santa Ana Cal) and others went to middle July 25 Wednesday

Hike and climb to Surprise and Amphitheater Lakes. Side trip to observation point. Pictures taken from the point and of the lakes. Leader Bob Ellingwood. Party Ellingwood, Allen Fink, (Samisoe?), Marjorie Johnson, Clem.

July 26 Thursday. Packed down from Garnet Canyon Camp July 27 Friday
